  1. In some cases, we actually need an explanation from New York. In this case, what happened was apparent to everyone except the fans in the park. Quite naturally, they were occupied watching the ball leave the park rather than what the runners were doing around first base.
  2. It does this year, but it didn't last year. As mentioned in post 146, the teams that Ryan can't block a trade to this year are the Diamondbacks, Angels, Dodgers, Marlins, Padres and Giants.
  3. The ump didn't even call the out after the replay. He explained it to the managers, but the run total on the scoreboard didn't change, even though the number of outs did. The fans in the park were left completely in the dark. Bill Schroeder suggested that maybe the umps ought to be miked. That might not be a bad idea.
  4. who was cut to make room for peralta? Goforth was optioned.
  5. The thing I always fear is that if a player is moved from shortstop, the powers that be frequently seem to decide that he should never play there again. Aside from that, when I look at Jonathan's major and minor league offensive stats, I see a SLG percentage that's weak for third base. His OBP and OPS stack up well for a starting second baseman or shortstop. And his numbers would be excellent for a utility player. In other words, I see a Craig Counsell type. That's a guy who can play 2B and SS regularly but should only be playing 3B regularly when a team lacks a better option.
  6. The tricky part is that Ryan can now block a trade to the Nats. The teams he can't block this year are the Diamondbacks, Angels, Dodgers, Marlins, Padres and Giants.
  7. Replay doesn't hurt drama and excitement. If anything, it adds to it. Yeah, fans have the opportunity to be excited twice. We had members clamoring for replay for years. I was pretty skeptical. But since it's been implemented, for the most part, I've been happy with it. The tweak that I think is needed is getting rid of the ones that last four minutes. Two minutes ought to be plenty of time. A cool bonus is that fans have the opportunity to see close plays on the stadium video boards. That didn't work out well before calls could be overturned.

  9. Great throw by Luc and a great tag by Hill. First CS for Hamilton on the season.
  10. Teams end up in Colorado Springs when they lose the game of musical chairs.
  11. The cause of John Lamb's exit was a sprained left thumb.
  12. I recall the fan at the Metrodome who wept and pouted when her boyfriend threw back a home run ball. One of them was a Brewers fan and the other a Twins fan. The home run ball was hit by a player on her side. They kissed and made up when Bill came down from the booth and gave them an autographed ball.
  13. In baseball, average is better than the median, which means that there are more below average players than above. That makes average a pretty good thing.

  15. He's on the 60 day. I doubt that he's anywhere near close. I don't think there's been an update in quite a while. Scooter's close to returning, though. They're expecting him to do a couple of games of rehab near the end of this road trip, possibly in Brevard County when the Brewers are in Miami. Garza, Smith, and Knebel are all with the team and playing catch. Augie 1 just mispronounced Villar about six times. After that, Jeff G. mispronounced it too, after pronouncing it right to get the discussion going.
  16. Alex Presley has been moved to right field and will bat leadoff. Ramón Flores will play center and will take over the #7 spot in the order vacated by Presley.

  19. Economically, I'd think that the biggest concern would be selling tickets in pesos and paying players in dollars. Otherwise, there's no reason to think that a Mexico City team couldn't do very well. Some economic tidbits quoted from Mexico City's Wikipedia page: [list-sp] According to a study conducted by PwC, Mexico City had a GDP of $390 billion, ranking it as the eighth richest city in the world after the greater metropolitan areas of Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Paris, London and Osaka/Kobe… Excluding the rest of the Mexican economy, Mexico City alone would rank as the 30th largest economy in the world. Mexico City has one of the world's fastest-growing economies and its GDP is set to double by 2020. [based on a 2008 forecast] The top twelve percent of GDP per capita holders in the city had a mean disposable income of US $98,517 in 2007. The high spending power of Mexico City inhabitants makes the city attractive for companies offering prestige and luxury goods.[/list-sp] If you ever visit Mexico City, it's easy to find people who are obviously very affluent. You'll be staying in hotels and eating in restaurants with them.
  20. But I don't know exactly how the numbers add up to get his service to 171 days. Maybe someone can tackle that. This is actually pretty easy. Kris was called up on April 17, and the season ended on October 4. Including both days, Kris was on the Major League roster for 171 days.
  21. My comprehension on service time is the decimals represent games in a season. At the top of each Cot's page, it says "Service time in years & days (through 2015 season)." There's no need to make an inference. Kris Bryant wasn't on the 40-man roster previous to his callup. That's probably the main thing that kept him from earning a full season of service. A player who was already on the 40-man would need to stay in the minors for 20 days in order not to get the full 172 days of service. The 2015 season started on April 5. Kris's contract was selected on April 17, and he played that day. That adds up to 12 days that he wasn't on the Major League roster. But I don't know exactly how the numbers add up to get his service to 171 days. Maybe someone can tackle that.
  22. We've had this discussion before, and you're right. However, the caveat that one of our stat gurus explained a few years ago is that K/AB is more appropriate than K/PA. I can't split that hair and explain why. But either K/PA or K/AB would be better than K/9. Essentially, a poor pitcher can have the same K/9 as a good one. The lousy one achieves his K/9 by facing more hitters, and the good one is penalized for not giving up hits and walks. I'd submit that we use K/9 because it's conveniently offered by websites and because it paints an easy mental picture. Six Ks in nine innings is easy to picture. Numbers like .166 aren't. What would be great is an adjusted K/9, which would actually be K/AB multiplied by the average number of ABs in a game. That would make it look like K/9 and eliminate the learning curve that would come with understanding the number.
  23. Patrick, we posted at the same time. In case you missed it, check the message directly above yours. The easiest thing to do is to check either Baseball Reference or Cot's for service time at the beginning of the given season, then compute from that point. That way, you avoid having to look at more than one season.
  24. Arbitration/team control is determined by service time. So time in the minors does not count. As an example, JJ Hardy's 21 day demotion got the team a full extra year of team control. To add to this… A player can earn up to 172 days of major league service time in a year. Once he's earned 1,032 days of service time (172x6), he can declare free agency. If a player spends less than 20 days in the minors in a given season, an option isn't used up, and he earns major league service for those days. Spending more than 20 days in the minors can cause the player to be under an extra year of team control if he's had no other scattered callups. Baseball Reference and Cot's both show the player's service time at the beginning of the season. Carter began the year with 3 years and 159 days of time (noted as 3.159). That gives his team this year plus two more years of control, provided that he doesn't spend any more time in the minors.
