2016 Random MLB News & Notes Thread

I think the 20% pay cut rule would apply. -
If you can get by the health aspect of Bratchos, the flavor is still really, really salty. I get the comments about the quality of the food, but I wouldn't make it a sweeping generalization. There are some food items that are great. There are others that are hit and miss, e.g. there's a big difference between a freshly cooked brat and one that's been lying around for a while. I wouldn't generalize about prices either. Water is horribly expensive; bring it in. But getting what amounts to a meal for $10 or so is a great deal. When I first saw that the announcement had to do with concessions, I yawned. But when I read the article and saw that there'd be 33% more points of sale, I was pleased. Lines are long, and this should be a significant help. $18 million is a huge investment. Rick S. said that a lot of changes won't be visible to the fans, and that makes sense. So I'll make my judgment based on the experience next season.

2011 Brewers in Brewers Wall of Honor

Since the Walk of Fame started including Milwaukee Braves, I think the most significant omission is Del Crandall. -

2011 Brewers in Brewers Wall of Honor

It's 1,000 innings pitched or (as Outlander says) 250 games pitched. Here are the full criteria: 2,000 or more plate appearances 1,000 or more innings pitched 250 appearances as a pitcher Winner of a major award (MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, or Fireman of the Year) Manager of a pennant-winning team Individuals memorialized with statues on the Miller Park Plaza Members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame who played for or managed the Brewers In 2015, the criteria were modified to include broadcasters. "Any alum who donned a Brewers uniform for any length of time and served as a primary broadcaster for at least 20 seasons with the team" is now eligible. So Schroeder was added due to automatic criteria rather than any special dispensation. As of 2015, players qualifying after retirement include John Axford, Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Yovani Gallardo, Carlos Gomez, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Jonathan Lucroy and Rickie Weeks. Trevor Hoffman will certainly qualify after his election to the Hall of Fame. It appears that the player that came closest to qualifying but missed out is Tommy Harper (1,984 PA). The initial class included 58 people. Schroeder was number 59. The idea is to honor "many individuals." The criteria are still exclusive, but they allow for a lot of people to qualify. I kind of like the idea that criteria for eligibility are objective, so for that reason, I'm going to retract my support for Sveum for the time being. If there were a reasonable way to get him in other than making some kind of exception, I don't think he'd be out of place, though. Maybe a supplemental voting procedure can be added in the future to consider those who don't qualify automatically. Sources: "Brewers Wall of Honor" to be unveiled at Miler Park The Brewers' "Wall of Honor:" Who's not on it? Bill Schroeder to be placed on “Brewers Wall of Honor” at Miller Park in 2015 -
2011 Brewers in Brewers Wall of Honor

Players who meet the qualifications are automatically included (although I think they have to be retired). So I think we can expect Fielder and Hart to be added relatively soon. Sveum is short plate appearances, but I wouldn't be against adding him based on all the qualifications you mention. This isn't meant to be recognition for being "elite." Rather, it's meant to recognize a significant contribution to Brewer history. Bill Schroeder was added later; I assume that was based on a combination of his playing and broadcasting career. I think something similar can be done for Dale without "opening the door" to players who weren't around very long. By the way, about "50 appearances as a pitcher" doesn't seem right. Many not-so-good guys would qualify. -
I have mixed feelings. Placing a lot more value on winning the division makes a lot of sense, and the one-game play-in accomplishes that. On the other hand, the wildcard team is frequently better than at least one division winner, even a lot better in some years. It's a shame to see a really good team be eliminated in just one game. Because I see about equal value to each side of the coin, I'm willing to go with the flow.

I recall a similar comment by Counsell when Jonathan was getting thrown out in mass quantities. His words were "by design." I suppose the idea was to push him first and worry about the outs later. Jonathan seems to be a guy who's well aware of his numbers. If that's the case, it should be impressed upon him — in both English and Spanish — that stolen base percentage is the number to gun for. If he does that, the stolen base total will take care of itself.

Entire Brewer coaching staff to return in 2017
1992casey replied to Matt Breen's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
AKCheesehead makes a good point about Sedar's other duties. I have no idea what they are, but I'd assume that he's performing them fine. He's been a part of the organization since at least the Bando regime and possibly even Dalton, so it's obvious that people value him. Are we clear that sending all these runners is all on Sedar, or are his managers instructing him to be that aggressive reckless? If it's coming from the manager, a change in the third base coach's box isn't going to help much. Having said that, I'd support flip-flopping Sedar and Subero. It can't get any worse. And with over a decade of minor league managing experience, third base coaching should be old hat for Carlos. -

I think some of it was a conscious decision. But it also seems that in a couple of those games, he could have easily continued had he not been needed to be pulled for a pinch hitter.

I think the preference was to shut down Garza and Nelson for the season after their starts earlier this week. It's not unheard of for a starter to pitch between starts in lieu of his bullpen session. Anderson did that earlier this season. I'd say that Cravy's Friday appearance was the equivalent of a bullpen session. As far as the "plan all along," Counsell said a couple of days ago that his plans could change based on Friday and Saturday bullpen usage. It looks like his initial plan fell into place.
