2016 Random MLB News & Notes Thread

The Brewers have four of the last thirty triple plays in MLB. The White Sox have three of the last seven. -
If you're going to have air conditioning, it'd have to be started up well before gametime and the roof would need to remain closed for the duration. You can't expect a result if the roof is closed at the time rain starts. I'm not saying that's good or bad. It's simply how things would need to work. If the project involves a parking ramp, I'd guess that there'd be something else to go along with it. The extra parking wouldn't be necessary unless current spots are displaced. The Brewers control the lots, so something like that is certainly possible. The idea of a luxury area behind home plate, as Bombers mentioned, also crossed my mind.

I don't think there's a PR issue because I think that most fans are more concerned about what's happening on the field than they are with possible discrepancies regarding announced attendance. I think the team has a knowledgeable fan base that understands the concept of the rebuild. But I think that knowledge likely stops short of questioning attendance figures. You can count me in the category of people who'd be intrigued and interested, but I can't say I'm annoyed. The situation I couldn't figure out was the long streak of sellouts a few years back. At most games, there'd be a glaringly obvious chunk of empty seats. I wonder if those seats were gobbled up by the secondary market and not resold. At any rate, this is the eleventh consecutive year that the Brewers have drawn 2.3 million or more fans. Only seven other teams can make that claim: the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Angels, Giants and Red Sox.

Good luck to your son, CheezWizHed. I hope it turns out to be something relatively simple.

he was on a spring training webcast this year. he did just okay, but you could notice his improvement once he got into a groove. This is similar to what my assessment was. Tim didn't hit the ground running, but he picked up momentum as the game went on. Most importantly, his contributions were interesting. And you could tell that with some experience, he'd be good in a color commentator or analyst role. I wouldn't hesitate to drop him into the broadcast team if they're in need of someone on a given day. Otherwise, he can be featured occasionally. I'm impressed with his videos. There's good creative thought behind them, and they're professionally done. What impresses me the most is that he can churn them out so quickly. At any rate, I think this is an excellent hire. Tim's a personable guy who brings a unique set of skills to the table.

This season's final attendance: 2,314,614. I had guessed that today's attendance (31,776) would be higher based on the fact that no terrace tickets were available online. All I can figure is that the Brewers didn't offer those seats for sale once the charity price was offered. As of last night, there were about 2,000 bleacher seats and about 30 club seats available for purchase. rickh150, based on what we've seen over the years, I think that very few seats count as truly free. We had an example of free seats very early in the Attanasio tenure, possibly his first season. The Brewers offered all remaining seats for the final home game for free. Tickets were snapped up in no time. The official attendance was announced at 13,000-something. It was estimated that 27,000 people occupied seats. My guess is that baseball has guidelines for what's considered free and what's considered paid. It likely makes perfect sense to them, even though it may make little sense to us. I'd surmise that BP tickets once redeemed (not necessarily used) count as paid seats because the promotion is paid for by BP, albeit at what's likely a heavily discounted rate.

I guess that the umpire determined that Phillips did nothing to intentionally obstruct Braun. Obviously, Counsell and the fans in the park begged to differ. I think the strangeness that MrTPlush refers to is that the umpire's actions made him look like he did initially call obstruction. FWIW — and I always forget this — interference is caused by an offensive player and obstruction is caused by a defensive player. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because I was just watching the Reds' broadcast of this inning and the announcers explained it. Bill Schroeder also had cause to explain this recently.

Welcome to the board, balsamlaker. Fort Wayne would be the smallest AAA location, coming in below Reno. [pre]City MSA CSA Reno 450,890 (2015) 579,668 (2010) Fort Wayne 408,071 (2016) 569,636 (2016)[/pre] MSA = Metropolitan Statistical Area. CSA = Combined Statistical Area (which covers a broader area than MSA).

What I meant was that while this has been an interesting discussion, given the politics, we should now bring it to an end.
-
I think that this is a good time to quit while we're ahead and move on to other discussion.

An OBP below .310 is low. An OBP below .300 is a cause for concern. An OBP in the .280s or lower starts to become a disqualifying factor for significant playing time or even for a roster spot. Right now, offensively, Hernán's OBP is teetering between "low" and "cause for concern." But it's up from last year, and it's close to his .305 OBP in the minors. But the defensive versatility is valuable. There wouldn't be sample sizes to rely on stats, but he seems comfortable at all these positions, and he seems to pass the eye test. How much he offers boils down to offense, though. If he sits at a .280 OBP, he's probably a good 25th man to have. If his OBP is at .300 or better, he can start several times a week, giving a day off to whoever is ahead of him at whichever position he takes.

No, he had never played in the outfield in the Majors until this season. He has an inning here and there in left field in the minors and foreign leagues, adding up to under 10 innings. This season, Hernán has started at six different positions and has played seven. He's played every infield and outfield spot, and left field is the only position he's played where he doesn't have a start.

But some are clear as mud. If you watch on TV, the announcers are scratching their heads. Imagine the fans in the park. I was at one game where a replay was immediately followed by another one. Those of us in the stands had no clue what either replay was about. I agree that the NFL mostly has it right. However, at Lambeau last year, we noticed that the official was hard to hear in the stands, and he wasn't closed-captioned on the scoreboard.
