From the Random Thoughts topic… Since the 2013 thread is locked I'll add it here. I read in today's Journal that Ernie passed away on Friday at the age of 88. Here's an obit: Ernie von Schledorn was consummate salesman His commercials, along with the jingle, were certainly part of Milwaukee for decades and remained largely unchanged over the years. "Who do you know wants to buy a car?" would certainly be an appropriate epitaph.

Examples of the type of stuff that has no place on this board: Brew4U, when you applied for membership, you said that you wanted to "be a contributor to positive Brewers discussion." That doesn't appear to be happening.

It's good to be careful not to overuse Afrin and its equivalents. It has an addictive quality. After a couple of days, it stops being effective. The addictive aspect kicks in when people use more and more of it to try to get it to work. That's why the directions tell you to only use it for X number of days. It seems easy enough to use the appropriate water for a nasal rinse. The part that would worry me is proper cleansing of the equipment.

A quick Google search indicates that it's unsafe to use tap water for sinus rinsing unless it's been properly boiled or filtered. There's an exact definition of "properly" that needs to be followed. Otherwise, distilled or sterilized water can be purchased. The deaths had to do with the use of tap water. Tap water contains organisms that can be absorbed by the nasal passages and cause infection. When drinking tap water, stomach acid will kill these organisms.

The Mac calculator app's new look is cool enough except that it's tough to see the decimal point.

Just to review how this works… Our board is set to show times in Central Time, Central Standard Time (CST) in the winter months and Central Daylight Time (CDT) in the summer months. When you're logged in, your personal time settings override the board settings. These can be accessed by hitting the "User Control Panel" link in the navigation bar at the top of every board page, then choosing "Board Preferences" in the "Options" sidebar on the left side of the page. Set the appropriate time in the "My timezone:" dropdown. Underneath the dropdown, choose "yes" or "no" next to "Summer Time/DST is in effect:". When daylight time starts and stops, all you need to do is change the "Summer Time/DST" radio button to either yes or no. You don't have to change the "timezone" dropdown. If you move to a new time zone, change the dropdown to match your new location. If you're in the United States, you shouldn't have to change the DST radio button unless you're moving in or out of Arizona or Hawaii. Aldi is still in Wisconsin. I haven't tried them. I should check them out for produce, though. Costco's locations are too inconvenient for me to consider them. The closest stores are over 30 miles from me. Sendik's is my overall favorite, but it's not convenient to where I am now. I used to hit them up several times a week. Now I go there once or twice a month. Quality is good, employees are almost always available when you need help, checkout lines are generally under control, and the stores aren't so huge that it becomes a pain to navigate them. Pick 'n Save's prices are high for a store that has "Save" in its name. Their sale prices can be good, though. Employees are friendly and helpful when they're available, but oftentimes it's tough to find one. Woodman's is great for selection and prices. Because the stores are huge and generally crowded, it's not a place where you'd run in for one or two items, though. Trader Joe's has great quality at generally reasonable prices. But since they're small, they won't have everything you need. Whole Foods is expensive, but they have some really cool stuff. They have two or three items that I regularly purchase there. While I'm there, I might grab some one-off items at treats. They'll be opening a second Milwaukee area store (in Wauwatosa) in 2016. I really enjoy Outpost, but they don't have the one or two items that would make them a destination for me. If they were in my neighborhood, I'd probably stop in fairly frequently, though.

I have a plumber at my house. I was in the middle of asking questions when he made a phone call (vs. receiving one). He's been on the phone for over 10 minutes, and he's not talking about anything related to plumbing. When these people come over, I like to ask my questions, then get out of the way and let them do their jobs. Now I don't remember what my questions were.

One thing I've noticed at Sam's is that a lot of items aren't deals at all and can be gotten more cheaply elsewhere. I've gotten a couple of inexpensive TVs there, though. Both were priced well, and one of the two is really nice quality-wise. I kind of inherited my Sam's Club membership, so I never actually made the decision to sign up. I’ll be paying for it for the first time in December, so I'll pay for a year and evaluate its usefulness next year. For what it's worth, I get chicken at Trader Joe's. Since a special trip to Trader Joe’s isn’t convenient for me, I stock up when I’m in the neighborhood. And I do stock up on toilet paper. On another totally random subject, a neutral wire is now required in almost all electrical boxes containing a light switch.

I'm not exactly sure which Keurig you have. If it's like mine, it's only going to use X amount of water anyway, so the cup is only going to collect as much water as the machine wants to use. My Keurig offers to make either a small cup or a large one. Since I'm using up a pod of coffee either way, I always go for large. The main reason I recommended using the two cup measuring cup was that you'd be safe from overflowing it. The second last thing you want to do is overflow your cup. The last thing you want to do is completely forget a cup before making your coffee. By the way, I've found that Sam's Club is the best place to get coffee for the Keurig. I wouldn't be surprised if Costco had similar deals.

We missed the passing of Don Pardo, who died in August at the age of 96. He was best known as the announcer on [cite]Saturday Night Live[/cite], a job he held from the show's premiere in 1975 until his death. He was also the announcer for the [cite]NBC Nightly News[/cite] and the original incarnation of [cite]Jeopardy![/cite].

The new iMac is 5K, which makes it possible to work on a full sized 4K video and still have room for editing tools.

I have awful awareness of the dimensions of the car Back in the olden days, drivers could actually see the trunk of the car. That made parallel parking a ton easier, even when considering the fact that vehicles were generally a lot larger than they are today. I think I've parallel parked more this year than in the past ten years combined. You can still manage to find a lot of areas around Milwaukee that don't have much in the way of off-street parking. KK Avenue is an example.

They raised it from $79 this year, and I haven't paid the new fee yet. But I think it's worth it if you buy quite a bit and like getting your stuff quickly. Two day shipping fees can add up fast, and even the more typical three to five day shipping fees can add up. I've placed 29 orders this year, so I'm probably getting my money's worth.

I use Prime for the shipping, but I haven't found the video service to be useful. Netflix, Hulu, and iTunes all seem to do a better job. Once I utilize those, Amazon seems to be both redundant and somewhat deficient.

For those who've been lamenting iOS 8's elimination of the Camera Roll, it's coming back next week.

The cable box replacement thing intrigues me. So, what channels won't I get? Will I still be able to get HD channels? Will I be able to get Fox Sport WI? They'd be HD, but beyond that, I have no idea. When I asked Time Warner for details, all they could tell me was that I could use a Roku 3 instead of a cable box, that I'd get most of the channels I was paying for, and what the interface was like. But nobody was able to fill me in beyond that. You can also use a device called Fan TV, but I was able to learn even less about that. I didn't push any harder because I kind of lost interest when I found out that I couldn't tune by channel number. Apparently, Time Warner is encouraging these cable box alternatives because they're losing money on box rentals. I can see how that could be happening. They're having to exchange and refurbish them frequently, and there'd be rebellion (not to mention cancelled subscriptions) if they raised the rental rates beyond what they already are. If there were a Time Warner app on Apple TV, I'd give it a go-around because I already own one, but they haven't motivated me to go out and buy something new. However, I prefer android devices. How well does Roku work with those? Roku has Android and iOS apps, but I don't know anything about them. I've used Apple's Remote app with my Apple TV. It's good as a supplemental thing, but having to wake up the iPad, enter the passcode, and give it a couple of seconds to get back on the network limits its use for doing quick things. On the other side of the coin, the app is absolutely great when you want to type, especially for putting in passwords. I simply paste passwords from 1Password. I'd assume that the sleeping phone or tablet issue would apply to any devices involved, whether it's Android, Apple, or whatever.

This is interesting. I hope it's a trend that continues. I agree. Nothing really replaces cable or satellite at this point as a lot of programming is unavailable via apps. "Cutting the cord" works fine for some, but it isn't for everyone. The obvious upsides to Chromecast are its size and price. The downside is that operating it requires another device (Android or iOS device; Mac, Windows, or Linux PC). If you directly compare Roku to Apple TV, the upside to Roku is that the user can add apps/services. Apple TV is restricted to content from providers who negotiate deals with Apple. Netflix and Hulu Plus are offered on Apple TV, but Amazon Prime isn't. The upsides to Apple TV are security and consistent user interfaces from app to app. Apple TV also communicates well with iTunes and with other Apple devices. Apparently, Roku is capable of accessing iTunes, but setting it up isn't an easy process. Roku 3 can take the place of a Time Warner cable box. However, you won't get 100% of the channels you pay for. And you're not able to tune by directly inputting a channel number. You need to drill down through categories or perform searches like you would on Netflix or Hulu. When compared to Xbox, Chromecast, Roku, and Apple TV are much smaller and much easier to move around. Or rather than moving them, since they're also much cheaper, it's reasonable to buy more than one.

How Eddie "The windmill" Sedar still has a job is beyond me. The first and third base coaches have jobs other than simply being on the field. I don't know who does what, but I'd guess that whatever Eddie did in his other roles was deemed to be satisfactory or better. Along with that, I'd surmise that decisions to send runners were very much a function of managerial philosophy.
