  1. Hmmm i had no idea Mike Hampton was healthy and pitching--much less for the astros. Did the braves finally just give up and release him or was there a trade?
  2. No short porch needed for that shot http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Man i hope this is the year for Rickie.
  3. Carlos Lee out. I'm happy there will be no late inning at bat with men on and him in the batters box.
  4. He's hanging a lot of sliders too that the brewers are taking (while looking fastball i'm guessing). He needs a changeup or something. His slider isn't good enough for him to be just a two pitch pitcher.
  5. 63 (41 strikes) SoCal Brew Crew Fan wrote: That short porch had no impact on Lee's homer...he crushed it. That's what i thought too, but they showed the replay from the side angle and it landed in the middle of the box. That's a lazy fly ball in basically any other park.
  6. Its hard to tell, but the foot came off the bag right after he caught it at best.
  7. Just one mistake so far by Yo that was only capitalized on because of the short porch. Great command as per usual.
  8. I've really grown to hate that stupid short porch. Just a lot to dislike about Enron Field.
  9. What's up with the astros fans booing Cam? It was a great play all the way around--throw, collision, and holding onto the ball.
  10. at SF - (2-1) Chi - (1-2) Cin - (2-1) at NY- (1-2) at Phi - (0-3) at Hou - (2-1) Pit - (3-0) AZ- (1-0) 12-10
  11. Player of the Year: Prince Fielder (.290/.402/.600/1.002 48 HRs) Its a tough choice between Prince and Braun, but i think a relaxed and fitter Prince will return close to his 2007 numbers. Pitcher of the Year: Yovani Gallardo (3.02 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 15-6) Nothing seems to phase this guy. His comeback start in september is kind of lost in the shuffle of a crazy month--remarkable performance under the circumstances. He stays healthy and pitches like the stud he knows he is. Rookie of the Year: Mat Gamel A injury to or lacking performance of either Weeks or Hall will bring Gamel up to add the much needed second left handed bat to the lineup. Once given the chance to start at third, he doesn't disappoint and keeps the job for the rest of the season. Jack Voigt Memorial Award - Unsung Hero: Jason Kendall He will continue to beat back father time and play a great defensive catcher. His years of knowledge will also help Gallardo and Parra develop into the aces they have the talent to be. Minor League Impact Player: Brett Lawrie His bat will lead to a faster then expected rise through the minors. Record: 83-8179 The offense improves over last year, but not enough to meet the short fall in pitching. Too many short starts by the starting rotation will put too much stress on a bullpen with too many holes and question marks. A couple injuries to the starting rotation at the same time could spell real doom. 2009 is the journey to the reward of 2010.
  12. Macha has already said he'll likely bat Weeks leadoff, Hardy in the 2 hole, and Kendall 8th. I'm sure Braun and Fielder will be in the 3-4 spots. I don't suspect it will be much different then a Yost lineup.
  13. I think it depends on the owner. Mark A. took a risk in the CC trade that the brewers might spend more money then they took in that season. Turns out they made a small profit, but if the brewers hadn't been profitable since the ownership change i have my doubts that Mark A. would have been as eager to roll the dice. I agree that a lot of owners care more about lining their pockets with profit from their teams then how competitive they are. I don't think Mark A. is that type of owner though. He's made it clear that overall he wants the team to be profitable, but he isn't looking for the brewers to be a significant stream of revenue. He wants to put profits back into the franchise.
  14. Well Melvin was smart enough to keep Jack Z before any of Jack's draft picks showed major league production. A lot of gms clean house when they get the job and pick their own people. Doug should get credit for that.
  15. Again keep in mind this is all built on the premise of the brewers being unlikely (as they are currently constructed without the addition of a major piece(s)) to make the playoffs in 09. I have no problem with someone disagreeing with that premise because its simply my prediction and nothing more. I've been wrong before and i could be wrong again. But if you agree with my perspective on the brewers' chances in 2009, i really don't understand how you think keeping Cameron is a good idea. I'd take a bucket of batting practice balls in return if that was the best offer and the whole 10 million Cameron will be paid this year is off of the brewers' books. The 10 million doesn't need to be spent this year. It could be spent next year, the year after, or the year after that. There's no salary cap its just the owner's pockets. Taking a step back this year and saving money will give the owner a bigger profit at the end of the year and make him more willing to go into the red for a season if a serious shot at playoff run in a future year presents itself. I think with the addition of Gamel and Escobar plus whatever you get in trading Hardy and/or Fielder will make 2010 or 2011 one of those years.
  16. I think when you're a team like the brewers you have to pick your spots or you'll end up mediocre season after season. The 10 million spent on Cameron could be used in much better ways and by trading him you'd get the bonus of something else in return. I really hope Melvin decides to take a step back this season and focus on making a run in either 2010 or 2011 instead of pinning the brewers' hopes to other teams getting struck by a rash of injuries or a string of lucky wins. If brewer fans generally have a problem with that, maybe we don't deserve a championship. Gotta be realistic.
  17. Not disagreeing, but my premise is that the brewers aren't going to be a contending team in 2009. No reason to spend 10 million on a 36 year old cf in the last year of his deal.
  18. Sure but its not worth 10 million dollars. The brewers can't afford to pay a premium for veteran sage wisdom.
  19. I'm ok with the brewers taking a step back this year and waiting for Escobar and Gamel in 2010. Then you trade Hardy and maybe Fielder for some pitching and you have probably a better team then you had in 2008 assuming Gamel and Escobar are the real deal. It took acquiring CC and him pitching out of his mind for the brewers to barely get into the playoffs. You can't make that type of addition every year so Melvin has to pick his spots. I just wish if its obviously that the crew can't add pieces to have a realistic shot at a playoff spot they'd move Cameron to the highest bidder. No reason to be spending 10 million on him if you're not a contender. As the team is currently constructed, i would bet on somewhere between 77-82 wins. You're going to have starting pitching injuries and right now the brewers simple can't handle them. A big part of the future is going to how good Yo and Parra are. If they can be a legit 1-2 at the top of the rotation and stay healthy, the brewers will be good for the foreseeable future.
  20. Yankees aren't mentioned in the mlb.com article except referring back to the red sox dealings with Boras when Johnny Damon signed with the yankees. Hold off pushing the panic button. Also, Scott Boras is the worst thing that ever happened to baseball.
  21. Yeah Hamels is getting that pitch. Whatever, defense is the reason the brewers are losing this game not the ump.
  22. Gotta say. This game is about as over as it can be after 3 1/2 innings. Really can't envision a scenario where the brewers come back in this one the way Hamels is pitching and because the crew is gonna have to go to the bullpen so early.
  23. So this better not have all been a dream... Really whatever happens from here out is gravy. The playoffs can be a pretty big crap shoot. I would really like the crew's chances if Sheets were healthy, but i still like them with CC pitching against the lefty dominate phillies twice if need be. Game 1 is very key in a short series. Winning at least one of the first two is a must.
  24. Don't forget merchandise. Trading for CC was a big gamble, but it paid off.
  25. Over the next month, hopefully we'll have many chances to check the sound level of a totally brewer fan crowd in huge games.
