  1. Anyone else think Davidson is trying to shield himself from criticism by describing the comment as "homophobic". If anything aren't Molina and Davidson the "homophobic" ones for over reacting? Why else would this particular comment deserve the over-the-top reaction?
  2. Yes, watching the game I found it surprising that the ushers are just take orders from the umpire in that situation, then I thought they are probably just going to make the guy move to a different seat. But then I read that the guy was handcuffed and ticketed...really? So now the County Sheriff Deputies just take their orders from baseball umpires? I hope the guy does fight it, wouldn't that mean that County would need some witnesses? I think it'd be great if they had to drag the whiner Molina and this joke of an umpire, Davidson, into court to testify, at least.
  3. Watch from about 2:35 here: http://blog.prorumors.com...st-louis-cardinals-game/
  4. Right, isn't it largely up to the sponsors to decide what they want to pay for for these give aways? Nothing is ever just a Brewer item, is it? I don't care much about most giveaways, about the only worthwhile thing I think I ever got is an umbrella that has Brewers logo, but it also has Miller and/or Miller Lite all over it. I really pay no attention to whatever they may be giving away when deciding to buy tickets or not, but I wouldn't mind a hat, t-shirt, or softsided cooler, can't really think of anything else that they typically might give away...other than we could use another umbrella.
  5. Isn't that the problem, that a pitcher like Gallardo is exactly what the Brewers would like to get for Fielder? But the Brewers are a team that is short of pitching, so it is difficult to say what they should be willing to give up in that category. If they had a healthy Sheets and Sabathia then would you trade Gallardo...I think you have to look at it that way, but even then I'd be inclined to say no.
  6. 25,000 is quite a bit more that 15,000. 15,000 is not all that much higher than what the lowly Pirates have been drawing on weeknights. Pirate last 3 weeknight games attendance: 12,393 13,302 12,686
  7. I tweeked this to what you should have said. Thanks, but then still need an adjective to describe the most recent one, which was far worse than their normal poor picture...what would be far, far worse than horrible? So that's why those telemundo broadcasts were so bad...I watched those back when for some games that was the only option.
  8. Melvin said that not too long ago when he was in the booth for an inning (don't know if he may have said the same thing during the off-season) and he also went on to say something about how in that way he (McGehee) is not like some others who think they are entitled to spot in MLB (or something to that effect).
  9. Last night I emailed the following to WMLW: You should be embarrassed with the horrible quality of tonight's broadcast of the Brewer game. Your channel normally has a much worse picture than FSN, but tonight you have set a new low. They just responded with: We wanted to respond to your complaint about the Milwaukee Brewers game broadcast on September 1, 2010. A piece of equipment failed at our transmitter causing the video to go dark. We apologize for any inconvenience this equipment failure caused. As we move ahead with plans for the 2011 season, WMLW will be upgrading its transmission to high definition. Again, we are sorry the problem occurred, and hope you continue to watch Milwaukee Brewers games on WMLW in the future. Thank you for writing. I don't have HD but I thought some might be interested in this apparent upgrade. Hopefully, in order to do HD, they will have to upgrade whatever it is that leads to the normal poor quality picture that they put out for Brewer games and it won't just mean a poor quality picture in the HD format.
  10. For anyone interested in doing so, WMLW says "Tell us what you think!" here: http://www.wmlw.com/___contact.html
  11. This is much worse than the normal crappy picture on WMLW. Meanwhile FSN has a college football game from 14 years ago on...just ludicrous.
  12. We are not talking about EBITDA in regard to the Pirates. The team's press release said: the Club made two separate payments in 2008 totaling $10.8 million to cover a portion of the taxes partners were required to pay for the 2006 and 2007 tax years. Taxes are not due on money that was spent on interest, etc. If the taxes were 10 million that should mean taxable income was probably in the range of $30 million. This agrees with the $15 million per year in net income that was reported in the article. These are truly profits and can not be explained away by 100,000 in extra attendance. It is the totality of the circumstances that make this very questionable. The team has one of the smallest payrolls, they have been dumping salary, they have one of the worst records, have not even had a winning season in 18 years (or whatever it's been), they can't blame their problems on the venue they play in, and they have presumably been one of the bigger recipients of shared revenue. It certainly seems reasonable to question whether teams like the Pirates have chosen to profit by losing.
  13. Hmm, but that high unemployment did not keep 55,702 fans from shelling out for a meaningless pre-season football game a week and a half ago. http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=300820004
  14. Just to put some perspective on this, even with no operating profit there would be a bit of profit for owners upon the sale of the asset. The Rangers were sold for $570 million, 12 years after being purchased for $250 million. That comes out to about a 7% return for enduring the burden of being an MLB owner. http://sportsillustrated....rangers.price/index.html On top of that this owner was recently paying himself $180K per year. http://sports.espn.go.com...lb/news/story?id=5344313
  15. If all the teams want to start charging less for tickets and concessions and pay the players less, it's okay by me. Hey, if they stopped over-paying the players maybe these "businesses" could even start paying for their own "workplaces", instead of demanding free ballparks from the taxpayers. Do you think that a lack of operating profits would mean no one would be willing to own a baseball team? Do you think if MLB player's pay was, say, $200,000-$5,000,000 that there'd be no players?
  16. How about $0? Why should team owners be entitled to any operating profits? They will make plenty of money when they sell the team, if that is their goal.
  17. In the IGT, I believe someone had indicated that the last time the Brewers drew under 20,000 was in May of 2007. On a Monday night here about a month ago the attendance for a game with the Reds was more than double what the Reds drew at home last night (32,000+). Another comparison will be coming up in Sept, it'll be interesting to see if the attendance here on Sept 20-22 is greater than this series in Cincinnati. The lowly Brewers have outdrawn the Reds by about 1/3, during a season where they have been out of it almost from the beginning. Now most tickets are sold in advance, but still that was pathetic for a first place team last night. Looking back the Reds did not even have sellouts when they played St. Louis earlier this month (instead they drew just about what the Brewers are averaging): http://espn.go.com/mlb/te...name/cin/cincinnati-reds
  18. It's pathetic, they don't deserve a first place team...but hope they stay there, given the alternative.
  19. As a couple others have noted, I was surprised seeing how many empty seats there are for a team in 1st place. I wondered if it was just tonight, but looking up the numbers it looks like they are not drawing all that well despite their success. The Brewers are actually outdrawing them by a significant margin, averaging 34,669 to the Reds 26,070. http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance
  20. Melvin seemed to me to be confirming that when in the booth not too long ago he was talking about how hard McGehee works to make the most of his talent, unlike some other players who think they are entitled to a spot in mlb. I don't know exactly how he put it, but it was something to that effect. I assumed, since he was talking about the current 3rd baseman, that the comment about other players was, at least in part, aimed at Gamel.
  21. Yes, that is always the mystery and I may have missed it, but I am not aware of any of our players adding something like "...but the conditions are the same for both teams", when they complain. If moving the roof to minimize shadows becomes standard procedure, I wonder if the policy would change at some future date if the Brewers ever have a team built around pitching, rather than hitting.
  22. Today the Sports section of the Journal website has the headline: Brewers look to salvage series finale and then further down: Right-hander Dave Bush gets the nod for the Brewers in the rubber game of the three-game series against the Pirates. I went and checked that I was not nuts and that the Brewers had in fact won the first two game of the series. They aren't even consistent "salvage" implies they lost the first two while "rubber" implies that they split the first two.
  23. How about they hire Lou and keep Mach, too. Macha can actually run things, maybe from the club house...or even better from a suite on the club level. Lou can be in the dugout and do all the things fans think are important, like yelling, kicking dirt on umpires, and ordering bean ball wars.
  24. Well then I guess $10 million is pretty much 0. At the link I gave that had detailed information for 1994-2003, the difference between operating income and net income was $9.9 million in 2003, mostly due to $7.6 million in interest expenses. The team does still have debt and it makes no sense to claim money spent on servicing that debt is "profit".
