  1. I'd rather have the pitching too. Greike already supposedly passed on $100 million extension to come here instead of Washington, he may only want to stay if the Brewers can remain a contender after 2012. They will lose some offense in going from Prince to (presumably) Gamel, but they will gain a little bit on defense to offset some of that. I have to agree that going from Grienke and Marcum and Yo to Yo and mediocrity would be a much greater loss.
  2. We did that for a day game a few years ago. IIRC, at that time many streets had permits required after 5 or something, so would not work for night game...or if it is a long game. Not being tailgaters, we do the same here, park ~1 mile away and take about a 20 minute walk. Avoids parking charges and the bottlenecks getting out of the Miller lots (and the cheaper parking is about 1/2 mile walk, anyway).
  3. Dmiles - "L" train info is here: http://www.transitchicago.com/[/url] I don't think the "L" goes far enough to really avoid all the traffic. Metra train info is here (but don't think any stops are near Wrigley): http://metrarail.com/metra/en/home.html It'll be Thursday's game for me. Driving to a friend's near downtown and taking "L" from back from there. He got tickets from the team some time ago, 6th row on 400 level behind the plate. BTW, Thursday has Cubs Sunglasses for the first 10,000 fans...yippee http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif.
  4. It's not a matter of blocking the base, that would be fine if he has the ball, but he was pushed off the base by the catcher.
  5. That's not true, they could call someone up from the minors. For example if Lucroy were injured, it does not necessarily mean that Nieves gets more starts, it might mean Kottaras comes up and takes over. I don't follow minor leagues, so I don't know all that might be ready for MLB but for one example they could call up Gamel to play, I assume, 1st or 3rd now, if there were an injury.
  6. In fairness to Hall, he had a great year as SS and was told it's still not your position, you are the guy that has to move. Oh and not only that, even though he'd always been an infielder, he was sent to the outfield, so that Ryan Braun could suck (defensively) as a third baseman. Then the following year they decide Braun is too horrible to keep in the infield and they put Hall back in the infield. Rickie Weeks has improved defensively, but going into 2007 he had been pretty bad for a couple years and some thought he'd need to become an outfielder. Nevertheless, Hall was the guy who had to be moved to the OF. I don't expect him to come back to the Brewers, and anyway, we now know that Josh Wilson > Bill Hall. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. At least he didn't pose and watch it or anything like that
  8. It seems that they do, as was indicated above, they are all available in "cool base": http://www.majesticathlet...sey-_-1268682958_PG.html In the past I remember one of the players saying that the blue was the only one that "breathed a little bit", but I think at that time it was the only one in "cool base". I think the players must just like the blue better and recently it is the superstition as others mentioned.
  9. Bill has said that before about not being a catch until you take it out of the glove, but after looking it up, I think he is mistaken. A CATCH is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it; providing he does not use his cap, protector, pocket or any other part of his uniform in getting possession. It is not a catch, however, if simultaneously or immediately following his contact with the ball, he collides with a player, or with a wall, or if he falls down, and as a result of such collision or falling, drops the ball. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rule2.shtml There is more to the definition there, but nothing that would make that play not a catch.
  10. For the season, Hall's OPS is .612 (not .512), Betancourt's is .591 Josh Wilson has only 10 ABs, so his is meaningless, but last season was .572
  11. Part-time Giants coach, J. T. Snow: "The (Posey/Cousins) play was clean" http://www.palmbeachpost....orget-about-1504661.html http://www.palmbeachpost.com/multimedia/dynamic/00891/pudgeblock_891684c.jpg
  12. Is Bill Hall > Josh Wilson?
  13. Why can't the runner be impeded going to other bases then? I think they can be, it is not obstruction if the player doing the impeding has the ball or is in position to receive a throw and make a play on the runner. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rule2.shtml The difference is the runner is not going to be going full speed standing up into 2nd or 3rd, because he can not over run the base as he can at home plate.
  14. Wouldn't that be accomplished by saying if the catcher is in fair territory (not including home plate itself, of course) and the runner runs into him, it is always going to be ruled interference from now on? Adding a line would be a significant rule change. The runner on his way home would then have to focus on staying between the two lines for the last X feet, rather than just focusing on being able to touch home plate when he gets there.
  15. The catcher has a choice to not block the plate now, if there is an extra line for the runner, the catcher still has a choice to bock the plate or not. If they want less collisions, I don't think they need new rules or lines, they can just choose to enforce the existing ones. If MLB wants to do this just put all teams on notice that as of _____ umpires are going to be very strict on interference on plays at home. The idea Bill and Brian talked about yesterday, that the catcher can not be run into if he is in fair territory seems like it could simply be enforced as a reasonable interpretation of interference by the runner. But then I think you would also need to call obstruction when the catcher is blocking the plate (by positioning himself in foul territory) before he has the ball.
  16. Quinterro was setting up to block the plate long before he had the ball. If he didn't want a collision he should not have been doing that. He also slipped on a bat. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/....jsp?content_id=15258683 Also the Giant's GM is an idiot. "You have to slide into other bases," Sabean said. "Why shouldn't you have to slide into home plate?" http://www.usatoday.com/s...1-05-28-4260483737_x.htm Really, this guy is a GM and he thinks the rules require sliding into other bases?
  17. Then make it 30 feet from home. Or 20 feet. The point is, if there's a defined area where the baserunner is supposed to be and where the catcher is supposed to be, it would make things go more smoothly at home plate. I'm not against contact, but the current situation seems closer to chaos. The catcher is still going to block the plate, so how does this help? There is a defined area for the baserunner, they have to be able to touch the base, so that defines where they can be when coming into home. Maybe we should just make it always a force out at home? But then why stop there, all tag plays are riskier than force plays, so let's make it always a force at every base. But then, guys get injured sliding and diving into bases too (remember Jenkins foot practically falling off his leg), so let's allow the runner to over run the base at second and third, just like first. One reason there are collisions at home is because, unlike second and third, you can run right through the plate. There is no need to slide in because you do not need to stop on the plate.
  18. I knew it would turn out like this. Things like this usually do. Yes, so while not "blaming" the Brewers, you do have to wonder why they would have expected any other outcome. Did they really think people would wait until 7 am (or whatever the time was) and would take only one? I do think the Brewers were foolish if they truly expecting anything other than a bunch of dopes madly scrambling to scoop these things up.
  19. Why? He is 25 years old and gets a day off tomorrow.
  20. Not really, it would have been a sacrifice fly and still driven in a much needed insurance run. I like having one good defender in the outfield. Whether it is Gomez, Morgan, or Cameron, having a good defender with great range in CF makes up for some the defensive shortcomings of the other outfielders on this team.
  21. Gomez is 25 years old, why in the world would he need an extra day off? Just play him every day until Morgan comes back.
  22. On the contrary, the current manager who the players reportedly love, has a much better pitching staff and the rest of the team has little change, so if we continue to end up with no improvement or even worse results than under Macha that will be exhibit A in making the case that "chemistry" does not matter.
  23. I think some are taking the "blaming" Roenicke way too seriously and literally. It is really about expressing frustration with his love of bunting, etc. eg.
  24. Well, for some reason the team, despite having a GM who seems to only value power hitters, chose to hire a bunt-happy manager so it shouldn't be a surprise. I too am blaming this on Roenicke.
  25. Yes, he does. I was there Friday and he was booed. It is idiotic, but it happens.
