  1. I think I've had enough of Dan Levy for awhile. All the ads and Twitter memes. Let's give that a rest for a bit.
  2. I can't speak to what most men would do, but I would pass on Urban's night every single time.
  3. I'm not sure it was just a tap, though the video was unclear. I also like that there is a mural in the bar that includes a picture of Meyer and his wife. Agreed that not flying home with the team isn't getting enough attention. They're 0-4 in his first year on the job. Probably not the best time to take time off. Being called out by the team owner and being laughed at by players is the ultimate humiliation in a sport that prides itself on being extra manly.
  4. As much as I loathe football, I do love stories like the Urban Meyer one. Reports are that he's a laughingstock in his own locker room. Good times!
  5. Dave Cameron is reportedly leaving the Padres front office. The former Fangraphs editor has been with the team since 2018. The Padres seem to be in disarray.
  6. Either way, it's good for Stearns. Having the wealthiest owner in baseball interested in him raises his bargaining power with Attanasio.
  7. College sports existed long before there were billion dollar tv contracts. I'm sure that schools will be able to operate low revenue sports if they want to. As for those huge deals (CBS will pay $1.1B per year for March Madness from 2025-2032), it's pretty gross that a whole industry is getting wealthy on the backs of unpaid players. If the NLRB recognizes player groups as bargaining units, that could also open players to receive worker's compensation if they are injured as workers (players) for their universities. That's especially meaningful in football.
  8. At a minimum I want him sent to Arizona to rehab his hand. Away from this team. He does not deserve to hang out with the guys who are trying to deliver a World Series win for this team. If I was the GM I'd like to trade the guy, but I recognize potential buyers need to see how his surgery comes out before anyone would be willing to pay top dollar in a trade. Maybe by then I'd be less incensed and take the guy back at Spring Training and move forward. But we should not let this guy off the hook. His rash and stupid actions have seriously hurt the team at its most dire point of need. Just saying "oh well" is completely unacceptable. Totally disagree. He has been an important part of the team, presumably with friendships in the bullpen and throughout the roster. He's a grown adult who was dragged before the cameras by Stearns to explain his injury. He was contrite and humiliated. He should be there to cheer on his teammates, and to serve as a daily reminder to them about self care. It stinks that he injured himself, but sending him to time out does nothing to support the 26 guys who will be competing.
  9. It's a bummer, for sure and he seemed very contrite in the presser with Stearns. He's been a great Brewer and I hope he's able to pitch as effectively with a plate in his hand. Yovani Gallardo had his own incident with alcohol years ago and the team just put his plaque on the wall. I hope they show similar tolerance for Williams, whose infraction didn't risk anybody else. It was a bad move, and he came clean about it.
  10. The NLRB general counsel issued a memo today indicating her belief that college athletes are employees of their schools, not merely student-athletes. This further opens the door towards athletes being able to bargain collectively for compensation. I think we're on our way towards college sports being fully professional sooner rather than later. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2021/09/29/nlrb-memo-says-college-athletes-school-employees/5915491001/
  11. Attanasio isn't wrong, but I think the "he's under contract" line is weak. Stearns will either stay or go depending on factors important to him. Does he like it here? Does his wife like it here? Would he kick himself later if he never seized the opportunity to lead the Mets? How hamstrung does he feel living with a small market budget? How is Mark A as a boss? How much money would Cohen pay? Being "under contract" doesn't much matter if someone is miserable where they are at. Stearns doesn't seem miserable, but he's in demand, and he'd be crazy to not consider what else is out there.
  12. To me, "Up North" means north of Wisconsin Dells and west of Appleton. It also means areas where hunting, fishing and roadside jerky & smoked fish are common.
  13. Strangely, the new head coach, Tyren Jackson posted a retort on Instagram, admitting there is no school. Bishop Sycamore is a football team only. Ummm.... Doesn't that make his team unschedulable for most (all) other high school football teams? What HS Athletic Director is going to schedule his team to play against a barnstorming adult team? I think he doesn't understand how that would be problematic. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/highschool/2021/09/06/bishop-sycamores-new-football-coach-not-actual-school/5749219001/ https://www.totalprosports.com/2021/09/04/new-bishop-sycamore-hc-denies-fraud-allegations-wants-people-to-stop-slandering-these-kids-video/
  14. The story is so bizarre and is such an example of what's wrong with education, the sports culture, ESPN and state athletic associations. Bishop Sycamore is purportedly an online high school based in Ohio, but participating in a Texas HS athletic league. Last year they went 0-6, and were outscored 227-42. They claim to have top level football recruits, but their roster doesn't have any players recognized by recruiting organizations. At least one of the players might be beyond graduation age. They got manhandled by a powerhouse IMG Academy team on Sunday, 58-0, in a game broadcast on ESPN. And reports are that the team had played and lost a game on FRIDAY, in Allegheny County, PA. Everything is so weird about this. ESPN clearly didn't do their homework about the Bishop Sycamore team or its players being up to the task. Player safety was a real concern, not even considering that Bishop Sycamore had played 2 days prior. I've got a 5 year thread on the politics site about football being a stain on the culture, and this is the latest example of corruption by adults and kids who deserve better. There should be an investigation into this program. Since there is interstate commerce related to the program, I guess it would be a federal issue, if authorities are paying attention. https://www.cbssports.com/high-school/football/news/a-closer-look-at-whether-bishop-sycamore-is-a-legitimate-high-school-football-program/
  15. I am reminded of Jack McDowell's gesture toward Yankee fans and how that was handled in the press... https://www.gettyimages.co.nz/detail/news-photo/daily-news-back-page-dated-july-19-headline-jack-ass-yankee-news-photo/97288867
  16. Absolutely true.
  17. Baez, playing for a contract, just gave the wealthiest owner in the sport a reason to not even be in the bidding. Seems like a foolish play. And Lindor, who's signed to play before those fans until 2031, in the midst of his worst season, has put himself in a giant hole. How is the team supposed to market itself and him? I was at a game at Citi Field earlier this year, and I found the fans to be friendly, passionate, and as into the actual baseball product as any place I have ever been. It was a baseball crowd, not a beer and social night crowd. The entitlement and gall of players thinking they can tell fans how to behave is stunning. ‐---------- And now the Mets organization has announced a team meeting to rein in the thumbs down gesturing players. Seems wise.
  18. It's a cool gesture that really doesn't mean anything to the success of the team or the fan experience.
  19. More bad stuff coming out about Trevor Bauer. According to the Washington Post, he was subject to a temporary protection order last year involving a different woman. Some very disturbing text messages. I wonder if MLB is done with him.
  20. GM Aaron Rodgers is now calling for the team to bring Clay Matthews back to the Packers. Either that or he's just trolling the front office. Either way, I think it's funny.
  21. Definitely. There is also an effort to revitalize Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ. The NY Black Yankees and Newark Eagles played there. It would be great to see a game there.
  22. I think Cubs/Cardinals is the most fitting matchup, though MLB might want to get the Dodgers in there somehow, just for the tv audience. That would require some schedule juggling. This may turn out to be like the outdoor NHL games that they play every year. It's cool for awhile, but then the novelty wears off. Will we be as enamored seeing players emerging from a cornfield again? Still, they could keep doing it until the audience tires of it.
  23. One of the local meteorologists was speculating if the air humidity from the cornstalks caused the ball to travel a little further. There could be a number of factors..having an open outfield wall with no structure behind it may have had an impact. Lots of guessing, really, and with the tiniest of sample sizes, we'll probably never know.
  24. It's a league game. Everything counts. I didn't think I would like it, but it's been an entertaining broadcast.
  25. There will always be a "face" of the franchise..someone who is featured on advertising and products, etc. In years when the team doesn't have a celebrated superstar, they use the manager or mascot. During Braun's suspension, they even used Hank the Dog for awhile. I agree that Adames isn't well known by enough of the casual fans to be the face. But I don't think Yelich is long lived for that role if he doesn't perform. The team and its partners aren't going to use an underachieving player to market themselves.
