  1. It will be interesting to see how much support the totally undeserving Bernie Williams gets due to being a "winner" on the Yankees. You've got to remove those quotation marks around the word winner, because he actually was a winner. He won 4 World Series rings and 6 League Championships. Yes, being part of the Yankees made that much easier, but he still did it. He also did it at a demanding defensive position. He had a career OPS+ of 125. He's among the leaders in all the postseason counting stats. I'm not saying he's Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle. But the Hall isn't just about them. There's Billy Williams and Kirby Puckett and Enos Slaughter and Earle Combs. I would put Williams with that group.
  2. In order, I'd choose Barry Larkin, Bernie Williams & Lee Smith.
  3. B-R shows Sheets at 6.3 for 2004. Are the two WARs that different? It also shows Yount at 11.5 in 1982. Weird that they would be so off. Still, a great post. Tommy Harper rocked.
  4. Contrary to my claim that I am fully satisfied by watching Raw and Raw alone, I did tune into Smackdown tonight, and thought it was pretty good. It seems as though they shoot it with tighter camera angles, so you don't really see what's coming next. The Mark Henry/Daniel Bryan match was treated very much like a sports event, which added to the drama. And despite the lisp, Cody Rhodes is great on the mic. He's a terrific bad guy. Not sure they had 2 hours of content tonight, but parts of it were good.
  5. I use Donovan and Jorgenson to service my furnace and A/C. Thankfully haven't had to replace either yet--but I'm planning on doing so in the spring, so just one more season to go on my 20 -year old relic. D & J have done a terrific job with annual tuneups, and they sell & install new systems all the time.
  6. Not anymore. http://www.jsonline.com/news/obituaries/stalins-daughter-dies-had-lived-in-richland-center-j837ubs-134628588.html
  7. Stalin's daughter had ties to Richland Center?! That's something I did not know.
  8. My wrestling itch is fully scratched by Monday Night Raw. I don't watch Smackdown, I didn't watch ECW, I don't watch PPV. No ROH, and no TNA. I just don't have the time to get interested in another show. On DVR, I can buzz through a Raw episode, and skip past all the Michael Cole stuff, most of the Diva stuff, and all of the "this just happened 5 minutes ago" stuff. That cuts out at least 45 minutes.
  9. If this were about grade fixing or player crimes, I might agree. But this is about children being raped, the rapist having full access to the school, and all the top officials of the school pretending there was nothing wrong--including the winningest coach in NCAA history, the most powerful man in the state. I don't think this is going away anytime soon. OJ killed Nicole and Ron 17 years ago and the world has not forgotten.
  10. Agreed. But why give yourself extra hurdles? Petty idiots might indeed be in positions to make hiring decisions. Or they might be part of the committee that makes those decisions. Or you might have those petty idiots as coworkers, or as possible clients. The point is that a Penn State degree now brings some potential baggage. It doesn't bring cachet. It's less about Sandusky than it is about being part of a community of cultish cowards who have idolized a guy who is unworthy of their idolatry. You'd like to have pride in your alma mater, not be the butt of jokes.
  11. I would rather go somewhere else. While time will surely heal their wounds, there's no reason to burden yourself with their bad reputation. I guess it's like buying a product that's under manufacturer's recall. It's quite possible that nothing bad will come of it, but if you've got other options, why wouldn't you buy something that is unstained?
  12. Agree fully on the Ziggler/Punk match. Terrific action, lots of near falls. Vickie is great in her role. Punk went awkwardly out of the ring, and I thought he was legitimately injured, and I made an audible gasp when Ziggler did that front slam toward the end of the match. Best match I've seen on Raw in a long time.
  13. Final cost to the winning bidder including buyer's premium. . .$22,796. Not as much as some of the more recent homerun balls, but still a very high price. Hopefully we'll see it surface in SE Wisconsin.
  14. Congrats to Sveum. There are only 30 jobs, so I guess you have to take it when you're offered one. This does take some steam off the rivalry. It's more fun to think of the Cubs as bumbling fools, and now they have one of our own at the helm.
  15. Just two days to go in this auction and the ball is at $7321--and they haven't yet reached the reserve price. That's a lot of money--and it's going to take more.
  16. I love the classic Fiat 500. The new one is probably way more reliable & safer--but it looks like an egg. And there's no way that Jennifer Lopez drives one.
  17. Ceiling fixtures can be a chore. Some things to be mindful of. . . Is the new fixture heavy? Someone's got to hold it while the other person makes the electrical connections & mounts it. Is the existing electrical up to code? Is it grounded? Is there a box holding the wires? Is the box properly installed structurally. . .can it hold the new fixture? I've done a couple of them over the years, and sometimes it's a 15 minute job, and another time it could take much longer. . . Hope yours goes smoothly!
  18. Heyman and Buster, etc. all say he's a great guy. He was a fine Brewer, and its especially nice to see that he has recovered from his concussions. This looks like a really good hire.
  19. There are international female fans of that stuff, too. When we lived in Singapore, our maid (25-year old Indonesian with passable but fairly limited English) was a fan of the Twilight stuff. Her whole circle of friends (Indonesians and some Filipinos) knew way more about Twilight than I certainly expected. Part of it was their voracious appetite for American and European culture, and the other part was for the romance. But it's certainly not for everyone. I'm a 49 year-old man who wouldn't watch 5 seconds of it, even if it were performed live in my living room.
  20. They just need to sign Kevin Mench.
  21. Their orange cap is a little much for me, but I'm all in on the black one. Not a whole lot of love on this board, so I may have that logo all to myself next year at Miller Park.
  22. I was in first grade in 1968, and back then, there weren't a ton of reading materials outside of stuff we would get at school (Dick and Jane, The Weekly Reader, etc.). So a lot of us spent a fair amount of time each day with The Green Sheet in the Milwaukee Journal. The Family Circus was one of the first things that I read on my own--and it was consistently gentle and wholesome. Good job by Keane in being able to keep it that way all these years. I remember being especially touched by the panels with the deceased grandfather. RIP Bil. . .Thanks for all of your work.
  23. There are tons of Division One schools that aren't raking in the dough from their football programs. I did a quick look at some lesser programs. . .Harvard, Western Michigan, Wyoming, Louisiana Tech. . .Lots of crowds in the 16,000-20,000 range. Do you pay those guys less than players from higher-revenue schools? Do starters get more than reserves? What about athletes from non-revenue sports? Do they get paid? If we divert money to these student-athletes, what should be cut?
  24. No, they shouldn't be paid. Their college tuition costs upwards of $50,000 per year, and their athletic scholarship eliminates that expense. I understand that everyone needs money in college, and I hear the arguments for stipends, etc. I'm fine with setting up school-approved loans to these students of $5000 to $10000 per year--but those loans should be repaid, just like other loans.
  25. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57319150/andy-rooney-dead-at-92/?tag=cbsContentWrap;cbsContent I really enjoyed watching and reading him. I would have liked to have met him, but that would have made him even crankier, which would have been great. He lived a good long life, and carried himself with honor.
