  1. Thanks for the link. I hadn't read the Jackson testimony before.
  2. Kudos to Able Security in West Allis. We bought a house 4 years ago that had a Honeywell security system already in it. It hadn't been used in several years, but they were able to bring it up to date, install a couple of extra sensors where we needed, and get us up and running. The system has worked flawlessly, and I'm very happy.
  3. Gaylord Perry or others who cheat on the field I think would be perceived as the lowest offense. Even moreso than someone who loads up a bat behind the scenes and then brings it to the field of play. Perry's sleight of hand was there for all to see if they could--but they couldn't. And the subject of his actions was a baseball. He didn't alter his own body with substances that are controlled by the law. And none of those infractions are as serious as someone potentially throwing games for profit.
  4. Regarding gambling, you can't have the public thinking the games aren't on the up-and-up. Otherwise what exactly are you asking them to buy? That's why point shaving is such a big deal whenever it comes up in college basketball. If a player or manager has ties to gambling, then the integrity of their play could be perceived as compromised. And do you mean Joe Niekro? There's nothing on Phil.
  5. I read the link. . . If the only evidence supporting Jackson is his claim that he wanted to tell Comiskey, but was denied a meeting, waited an hour and was still denied, then I don't think that's enough for me to change my decision. He clearly was as good or better than some of the other players in the Hall of Fame, but that evidence just isn't enough.
  6. Ha! For the record, I'm not the racist or the tyrant that Judge Landis was. I do like that he was a grouchy old blowhard, though. I'm open to right past wrongs. I'll have to look at the info regarding Jackson's actions in reporting the stuff to Comiskey, and maybe I'll change my crotchety old tune.
  7. I don't know what is to be gained by inducting him now. He's been dead for 60 years. Baseball history certainly has not forgotten about Jackson, and the fact that he is still on the ineligible list may serve as a reminder to current and future players on how seriously organized baseball takes gambling. He was a tremendous hitter, and was clearly destined for the Hall of Fame, but he also knew of a gambling, game-fixing operation and did nothing to stop it. That inaction put the whole of the industry at risk. His stuff is on display in the Hall of Fame & Museum. He just doesn't have a plaque hanging in the gallery.
  8. For me, there's enough anecdotal evidence on Paige's career to say he belongs in the top 20 of all time. What's unknown to me is whether Martin Dihigo, Smokey Joe Williams or Hilton Smith might not also be in the discussion. As for Halladay, it's way too soon for me to even consider if he's good enough to make it. He's 224th in career innings. If he goes another 700, he'll reach the top 100, and then I'd say let's take a look. B-R's list of top 10 similarity scores for Halladay doesn't have a single guy who is a top 20 career pitcher, so he's going to have to have a lot of good baseball in him to reach the list.
  9. Sure, but the whole industry is filled with guys who have taken on various personas throughout their careers. Triple H, Kane, Foley, Stone Cold, Ziggler. . .its not like Albert/Tensai is the first guy to take on a new role.
  10. I recommend people listen to the WEEI podcasts for a few weeks to get a feel for how intense and chippy the Boston media can be. Valentine does a weekly show with two guys named Dennis and Callahan, and that segment is becoming one of my favorite eavesdropping endeavors. Lots of second guessing & combative back and forth. It's a far cry from the way the Brewers (and moreso the Packers) are handled locally. I like Valentine a lot. He loves to talk and thinks he's clever--but he's mostly right, or at least he provides a reasonable answer on why he does what he does. I think he messed up on the Youkilis incident, but it should pass in a few days--though maybe not with that media & fanbase.
  11. I don't think you're crazy--I like it, too. I'm a big fan of the pagentry of his entrance, I like the Japanese accomplice. I like the head markings, the japanese influence of his moves. He's a good athlete, he seems limber enough. Love the Baron Von Raschke claw at the end of matches, the green mist. . .He's got me hooked.
  12. I'm disappointed that so many in the crowd are chanting "Albert" during the Tensai matches. Give the guy a chance to introduce his new character. I want to see the big scary villan, not listen to a bunch of goofs chanting because they want you to know that they're "in the know."
  13. I'm not a fan of all the 42s on the field, but I think Jackie & Rachel Robinson are actually under-celebrated in the country. Their impact on the culture cannot be forgotten. Their story needs to be told again and again. They were heroes, while others might not have been. If we don't honor history, then it just fades away.
  14. I remember Rocker being inflammatory. I forgot exactly what he said, but that quote is tremendous! No lack of clarity from him! Marge Schott also faced MLB suspension for ignorant words. She was quite comfortable with the n-word and had racial hatred that extended beyond just language. And for the icing on the cake, she was sympathetic toward Adolf Hitler. She was fined and served a year's suspension. We'll see how the Guillen situation plays out. Early reports are that he was contrite and seemed sincere. But South Florida gets to judge.
  15. We can opine all we want about it, but it's strictly a local issue for Marlins ownership and the fan base they are trying to attract. The 5-game suspension, AND Guillen's apology and outreach to the Cuban-American population will be enough to satisfy them IF it's enough to satisfy them. If its not enough, then it could cost him his job. Those fans will decide. My prediction is he's going to lose his job. His comments didn't offend me as much, I just thought they were stupid, made by a guy who has lived his life as a blowhard. But I'm not Cuban, nor do I have family members who have suffered under Castro's dictatorial regime. I don't know anyone who left Cuba (or died trying). And, they aren't my tax dollars going to pay for the stadium. So his words didn't pierce through to me as they might have if I lived there.
  16. Not sure how much of the argument is based on being an outfielder. That part would be the only thing that would make me take Jackson over McCovey. While Jackson was a marginal outfielder, he was at least capable of fielding the position. McCovey only played OF because Orlando Cepeda blocked him at 1B. When the Giants traded Cepeda away, McCovey never played there again. Other than that, I'd take McCovey every time. He was a more productive hitter.
  17. I love when people start their racist rant with "Not to be racist, but..." As if that caveat allows for anything that follows.
  18. We just did our draft on CBS this week. It's not a keeper league and its not an auction, so your experience will be different, but I thought the CBS site did a pretty good job by itself of tracking who was taken, who was on what team, what the draft order was for upcoming picks, and a customizable ranking of the guys left on the board. All of that was shown in the draft room, which was available after our league commissioner opened it up for us. As for my own recordkeeping, I just download the composite player list from MLB.com into excel and highlight the guys who have been taken. http://mlblogsfantasy411.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/composite_projections_032212.xlsx Your league seems more challenging than mine, so my method may not work for you.
  19. I am very partial toward New York and New England. If you can make it during a special city event (NY marathon, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) even better. The city is great. Cooperstown is a few hours drive away, as are lots of Ivy League campuses, Vermont, Boston, Philadelphia... You would never run out of things to do..
  20. I thought he was looking a little swollen in the recent promos with Triple H and HBK. They have him wearing that stupid executioner's hoodie to conceal his new found fatness. I hope is in better shape for Wrestlemania. Wouldn't want to have his legacy spoiled.
  21. True, but he was playing with his 5-year old. They like to jump in bouncy castles and stuff. Joba often seems like a stooge, but I'll cut him some slack for playing with his kid.
  22. The following commercials bug me: Speed Stick guy playing poker who is talking to himself about betting the rent money. Golden Corral woman taking her friends to a pricey seafood restaurant, and instead, they jump and roll out of the moving car. MLB 2K12 video game: Kate Upton asking "Randy Johnson" (Justin Verlander) if he has any words of wisdom. These ads run constantly on the MLB channel, and I've seen enough. Make new ones.
  23. Awesome info, Dollarbill13. Whether or not WAR is the "be all and end all" can be debated, but Young is so vastly behind his peers, there's no way that his current production would have him in line for the HOF. To his credit, he does have two things that some voters like: a one-team career and lots of basehits. If he gets to 3000 then the story gets interesting, but for now, he's out.
  24. The ghost of Helen Kunz.
