  1. That is an amazing accomplishment. Congrats to you on your new life--and best wishes in reaching your next goal!
  2. Exactly, things were so much simpler back then. I remember begging my parents to take me to baseball day or bat day or rain parka day or whatever. I'm still upset that I was a 'tweener' and didn't get one of those Pabst/Brewers fishing hats. Someday, I'll get one on the internet. I did score a 'Medalist' jersey though back in '83. What a madhouse that was. Friday night I believe, Gorman's first game back in County Stadium after the trade and Sutton got his 3,000 K. I remember the place being completely packed and they ran out of jerseys, people were getting pretty upset too, kind of foreshadowing how things are these days. The 'Autograph Fridays ' became a stampede too, I think I remember reading that they've limited that to kids this year. If so, that's a good thing. I don't think that this craziness is solely driven by greed, I think that sports in general have gotten a lot bigger with the masses. I remember going with my parents to Shopko in Janesville way back in the day when it opened- probably circa '79 or '80. Paul Molitor was back in the 'sports section' signing free autographs (sporting a stasche too, wish I could find the picture my mom took), if my recollection is correct, there was no line and few if any people milling around.. Can you imagine if this happened today? There'd be a line out the door.I remember the night Nolan Ryan won his 300th game, and afterward a stadium employee was passing out certificates "I Was There. . ." The poor guy was just surrounded by a pushy mob, everyone grabbing for a piece of paper. He was getting it from all sides, and it was pretty crazy. I'm a collector, so I appreciate the search for something cool and getting what you want--but this stuff just isn't for me. Bobbles, Lawn Statues, whatever. To me, they're like buying a hunk of Frozen Tundra, or a Beanie Baby. Everyone's got their thing, though. My only hope is that the market dries up for these and the hoarders end up with a trunk full of worthless junk--like cans of Billy Beer.
  3. That curved pillow is a Boppy pillow. . .not sure if this is helpful. That picture doesn't visually remind me of anything from the 70s or really any album cover.
  4. RIP Macho Man. . . There wouldn't have been a Hulk Hogan without a Randy Savage. The standup interviews with Mean Gene and Savage were the best.
  5. He's a terrific guy and a great role model for all of us. I hope his final days are peaceful and painfree.
  6. I'm searching the Packer roster for someone named Tommy Bikinimodel. . .But he doesn't seem to exist. . .
  7. I love the Channel 10 auction--but are there really that many people who want wildlife art? Watch for 15 minutes, and you're sure to see that painting of that wolf poking his head out of the snowy trees. I love nature and I love art, but I just can't imagine a time when I would want a print of a pair of wood ducks. And it seems that every board has a signed Packers item. I guess they have to strike when the iron is hot. And of course, for those who can't decide between the two categories, there's the signed photo of AJ Hawk, in a posed shot with him holding an actual hawk. Fewer pieces seem to exemplify this fund raiser than that hawk photo.
  8. Don't ever blaspheme Gammo. I don't always agree with him, but he's a legend who has been great for the game--and he continues to provide thoughtful reporting and insight.
  9. Nieves has done a good job of catching Narveson this year. He was awesome against the Cubs and seems to know how to get the most out of Chris. Kottaras is such a poor catcher--For the backup job, I'd go with "more" defense, acknowledging that Nieves isn't Charles Johnson--but he's definitely the better of the two on defense.
  10. That's a shame. Bill Simmons should be entertaining in the coming days. I like Manny, but clearly he failed another test, and is done.
  11. This is my first time seeing WMLW, and I think it might be a deal breaker for me. I think it's worse than standard definition. I expected to hear Earl Gillespie calling the game. I'd much rather watch another game in HD than those darkened bluish blobs on WMLW.
  12. It still wouldn't be the nerdiest Brewers thing I do. Now you've got us hooked. . . So--you have a cat named Kottaras? Working on a Kevin Seitzer-themed beadwork pillow? You hand painted a couple of Precious Moments figures and have them look like Jerry Royster and Mike DeJean? Fess up, nerd!
  13. I'm not anti-nerd. I just don't understand the need or desire to score the game. I like to have my hands free--to clap, to eat, to pass beers down the row. . . Plus, you have to be absorbed fully into every game. What do you do when you get up from your seat? Do you have others do your scoring for you? How detailed do you get with your recordkeeping? What do you do with your completed scorebooks? Do you read through them afterward? Do tell. . .
  14. I've been away from the WWE for a few years, but am back into it a little bit. . .I don't mind the change to PG so much. They get to showcase microphone skills over chairshots to the head, which is fine for me. I love CM Punk on the mic. He's a pretty captivating guy, and it makes up for Orton being such a dope. I suspect Punk will win that match, perhaps with some outside interference from one of his Nexxus guys. Orton's wind up, where he pounds his fist into the mat, etc. is pretty stupid. I also love the Miz, which is pretty amazing. I used to hate him, though he's also a good guy with the mic. He'll probably retain, with some Rock v. Cena action setting up the opportunity. Sorry that Trish had to return to such a dopey match. I like Vickie, I hate Ziggler. LayCool is irritating. Morrison is being wasted, and Snooki will cover Layla for the win. I hope Trish sticks around for awhile, to add some spark to the Divas--though I suspect she'll be gone in a couple of weeks. Lawler is going to beat down Michael Cole, with Austin taking out Jack Swagger. I can't see it going any other way. We'll see what they do with the announcing team afterward. I'm disappointed that Big Show and Kane are in a crappy match. Maybe Koslov turns heel and beats up Santino. . .Why am I even contemplating this one? I have no feel for the Sheamus/Daniel Bryan match. They'll probably use the twins to provide a distraction, but Sheamus should win handily. Mysterio and Rhodes should be a good match. Do they debut the new Luchador during this one? If Cody Rhodes doesn't win, then what for him? So I have to assume he's going to get the win. . . Undertaker will win. . .I have a friend who is a big Undertaker guy, but I just don't get it. I haven't been a big fan, really ever. . .Maybe because his matches seem to take forever. . .RIP Triple H. And I love the Alberto Del Rio introduction. . .I don't know how the match is going to play out. Edge's set up for the spear is pretty tiresome, but I like him otherwise. I've been a big Christian fan for awhile. . .I suspect that Del Rio will win, as there doesn't seem to be anything else for him if he loses. I've always been too cheap to pay for WWE PPV, so I'll check out the results online, and then wait for Raw the next day. Maybe one of these years I'll spring for it, though with the MLB Extra Innings package, I spend enough on tv programming.
  15. Hells Bells. . . Too obvious?
  16. My faith in the local sports talkers is pretty limited. I heard two local guys on TMJ this weekend doing a season preview segment, and they were unaware that Bobby Jenks is no longer on the White Sox. They were flipping through a magazine trying to pick division winners, etc. Everyone makes a mistake once in awhile, so maybe you cut them some slack for that, but an even worse indictment is that they weren't even a little bit compelling. I'm not sure why they were on the air. I can't imagine ever having a time when I would sit in the car, not wanting to turn it off for fear that I'd miss something. There's enough decent sports content on podcast that you don't need to listen to bad radio.
  17. Is MLB The Show worth investing in a PS3? That's probably the only game I can imagine playing--maybe that and a WWE game. It looks compelling, but I don't want to be too disappointed.
  18. Some of those Amazon partners will sell stuff for absurd prices. I've seen out-of-print vinyl records and out-of-print books listed at super high prices, too. All it takes is one person with deep pockets and a need for a "rare" item. Buying from Amazon at least offers more assurances than buying from ebay or craigslist.
  19. I like the idea that people think of me when they see Judge Landis. http://www.davidpietrusza.com/Landis-painting.JPG I don't like that he was a huge racist, but he was grouchy, opinionated and full of bombast. Perfect for a message board avatar! As for any true-to-life likeness, sadly, I am not as fetching as the judge. He was a real looker.
  20. As The Rock would say, "Finally. . .JimH5 has come back to Wisconsin!" After 12 1/2 years away, me and Mrs. H5 are again official residents of the great State of Wisconsin. And we added one since we left in 1998. Thanks to the regulars on BF.net for being one of my lifelines back to America's Dairyland. I always like to keep in touch with my home state, and this remains a fine place to do that. Now my Brewer fandom might actually manifest itself in being able to attend some games at Miller Park. I hope to see you there. . .if you see a short, menacing white-haired man wearing a wool suit, appearing in black & white--that will be me.
  21. I use Skype. It worked wonderfully while we were living overseas, and I have kept it since we have returned. I have a local Skype number that my family can call, it will ring through to my Skype number, and if I'm not at my computer, I have it set up to ring through to my cell. There was something awesomely cool to have family members making a local call in Wisconsin, and me answering it on my mobile phone on the other side of the world. I am not a high volume user at all. I don't remember any times when we had difficulty using it.
  22. I hope Wayne has a Plan B for his career choice. A 30th rounder with weak numbers, an injury, and two drug suspensions. . .he seems to be taking up space, and not in a positive way.
  23. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/cooperstown-confidential-who-was-greg-goossen/ An interesting read about the guy. Too bad he didn't get a better chance to make it in the bigs. I can't get over how much roster turnover there was on those early Brewer clubs. Trader Frank Lane was a busy guy, shifting the pieces around. \ Fortunately we still have quite a few of those early Brewers around, Mr. Goossen not withstanding.
  24. I went to the TPC event at Sawgrass several years ago. There is a par 3 on the front side (8?)--we parked there and were pretty bored as guy after guy hit to the green and 2-putted. I don't think we saw more than a couple of birdie putts in 2 hours. Then we walked around for a bit. I think if I were to do it again, I'd find a guy I liked and then would follow him around. FYI--Sawgrass 17 looks cool on tv and would be fun to play, but in person at the tournament, it was mostly a bunch of loud fat drunk rednecks.
  25. I was thinking it was a golf towel or hand towel. . .yours would have knocked someone over! I'm guessing it was a retail item sold from a stadium cart or at Kohl's, etc.
