  1. Encyclopedia Britannica announced they are discontinuing the print edition, but will maintain an online version of their book. For those of us of a certain age, this is another reminder of the changing times. Growing up, we had a full set of the 1960 edition and several of their yearly update books in our house. Hard to think of anything in a 52 year old reference book that would be even marginally up-to-date now. And yet at the time, they defined what credible knowledge was.
  2. Rock Cena. . .blah blah blah. . . Undertaker Triple H HBK. . .slow talking. . .words about fighting. . .yawn. . . Man I can't wait until these two matches are over. I can't handle three more weeks of "build up".
  3. You've never seen Carlos Gomez's auto then No I haven't seen it. . .though by your post, I'm guessing it's a scribble. Not sure if modern players quite understand how short their careers are, and how quickly they will be replaced in the minds of fans. Autographs are one way for them to live on for years--especially for marginal players. But if they're making an illegible ink glob, who is even going to want that picture 5 years from now? Look at that beautiful Mariano Rivera sig and then look at the slop made by Lucroy. Why wouldn't he want to make it better?
  4. Zach Braddock is my new Least Favorite Brewer based solely on his lack of concern over having a legible signature.
  5. Today's mail included my 10+1 pack tickets and parking passes! Add in a couple of days in the 60s and we're getting close to the opener. . .
  6. I had forgotten about Mincher until several years ago, when living in Jacksonville, FL, I went to the Southern League All Star Game, and saw that he was the president of the league, and quite an important figure in baseball in the south. Hitter stats from the 1960s were so muted-- it's deceiving to look at what seem like pedestrian numbers now, were actually quite good. He was a good player, and seemingly a fine man.
  7. In my points league, a guy loses a point for each error, and I can see Cabrera giving 35 back this year. I would not take Braun number one, which leaves Pujols, by default. Though I don't think Tulowitzki is a horrible pick, either. I would much rather pick at the end of the round, giving you one of the better 2nd rounders. Good Luck!
  8. I haven't read the Koufax, Robinson & Mantle books, but I thought the Clemente book by David Maraniss was fantastic. I also loved the Leigh Montville book on Babe Ruth. I also recommend the Curt Flood book, if only for the stuff that doesn't get into the legal minutia. Crazy '08, Chief Bender's Burden, and the Rube Waddell bio by Alan Levy are also quite good. I'm currently reading the Effa Manley book by Bob Luke. It's also fine. There are indeed some clunkers out there, which basically re-report old box scores throughout the years, but there are also some good reads that give you a good insight on players of the past.
  9. Sounds like something a linebacker might do.
  10. Honestly I don't know. It might have been me. Or not. 99+ percent of my posts have originated from my computers. A few of my recent ones have come from my phone, including today. It's possible that I left the browser open and bumped the send button again. Something to monitor going forward... I'll close the browser from now on...
  11. Nike introduces a new shoe and they have to send out riot squads to quell the frenzied masses? What is wrong with people?

  13. You're going to seven games on your honeymoon!? Is your wife fine with that? I love baseball, but I would have a hard time going that often--and I know my wife would go crazy on about the 3rd day. I would recommend flying into NYC and spend a weekend there checking out the city and broadway, then come to Wisconsin for a week of fun.
  14. I thought Ziggler was going on the stretcher, but it was Barrett. That's too bad. I really like Barrett as the haughty Brit. William Regal plays that role really well. I think Billy Robinson took a turn at that way way back. I hope Barrett gets back soon. He can use his cast as a weapon. That's always fun. With the spills they take, I'm surprised more guys don't rip up their knees. Tonight was a good show, injuries not withstanding.
  15. I would like to see the Brewers in Florida as well. The old Dodgertown campus in Vero Beach is an awesome place, though it would take quite a bit of money to bring it up to modern standards. Maybe MLB would be willing to spring for those costs. It would be a shame to lose that great historic place.

  17. Admittedly this is a message board and so the standards are different than they would be for a real news organization, but I'm still uncomfortable with someone using an anonymous profile name, referring to anonymous coach saying that Gamel (or anyone in particular) is "partaking in wacky weed". That seems over the top to me, just as earlier posts on Braun had him essentially diagnosed with Graves Disease, low testosterone and herpes. I hope BF.net doesn't turn into a board where we throw around unsubstantiated rumors about players. Without evidence, it's not right to make claims about a guy.
  18. I also noticed that shot. Particularly the girl on the right holding her face. And it is hilarious that the whole section had as much enthusiasm as if they were waitingfor a bus. I did like how Tamina cocked her head like Superfly when she took off from the top rope, but she brings very little to the show besides that. The modern Divas are beautiful but I miss the Trish & Lita & Mickie & Molly & Jazz days. At least they could carry a match & storyline.
  19. Great 6-man match at the end. The rest of the show was a gigantic clip-fest, with prerecorded junk throughout. There was maybe 45 minutes of watchable stuff. I just can't sit through another montage of The Rock, Cena, Undertaker. . . I'm a Vegan! Bah. . .what a stupid angle.
  20. It's the biggest regular show in the area, but it's still quite tiny. The dealers have lots of paper things. . .cards, programs, yearbooks, magazines, signed photos, schedules, some books. There are some non-paper, too, but not much high end stuff. It is largely a local show, with Brewers/Braves & Packers dominating the tables. They always have an auction at the front end of the show, with stuff mostly in the $5-$25 range. There will be 20 or 30 guys crowded around the auction stage, and that will create a logjam. I attend the show 4 or 5 times a year. It's a fun event, if you go not expecting to be overwhelmed.
  21. Chris Mad Dog Russo joined Mike Francesa for a segment on Francesa's radio show earlier today. I loved listening to Mike and the Mad Dog when they were a team and today was a nice reminder of those times.
  22. If he never makes the Brewers 25-man roster, then it was a fine acquisition.
  23. If he is the 20th-best 1st baseman in baseball this year, that will exceed my expectations. He's never shown the ability to hit in the majors, and though he's entering his peak, it may just be that a .740 OPS is the very best he's capable of. I'm glad that they're going with him instead of Overbay/Derrek Lee/Carlos Pena. . .but I think he'll hit 7th most of the year and the absence of Prince will be glaring.
  24. Under the current circumstances, I can see why it is better for Braun to stay away. He's in a tough spot to be in a public situation like that. And his attendance would dominate the event, instead of being all about the team and the upcoming season.
  25. Awesome job by Boras to get the big payday. Congrats to the Tigers on getting a great player. It's too bad that the Brewers just didn't have the funds to keep him here, but that's the way it goes. Maybe this will be something that brings Prince and his dad closer together. I hope it all works out for everyone involved. And of course, I hope the Brewers get great value in those draft picks. It's a sad day, but we knew it was coming.
