  1. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Melky is roster filler. This is the kind of move the Brewers would have made 10 years ago. Great outfielder. Terrible hitter.

  4. Peeling off someone else's. . . Please tip your waitresses. I'm here all week.
  5. I turned 8 years old in the summer of 1970, and my dad took me to County Stadium to see the Brewers. It seemed that whenever we went to the game, Lew Krausse pitched. They often lost, but I thought it was the coolest thing to see such a huge patch of green, and to eat hotdogs served out of a metal box. In 1971, my mom was pregnant with my youngest sister, and she went to the same OB/GYN as Marty Pattin's wife. They both gave birth at West Allis Memorial Hospital around the same time, and one day, my mom came back from a doctor's appointment with an autographed picture of Marty Pattin. That was really cool. It was tough that the team was so bad during those early years, but it was still great fun to go to a game. Brewers, Bucks or Packers, it was a thrill to see when my dad had game tickets on top of his dresser.
  6. Man, that's a lot of money. . .I suspect by the time year 7 comes around, they'll be dreading the contract. Still, I can't fault anyone in the deal. The Yanks have the money to spend, Sabathia was blown away by the offer, and the Brewers gave it their best shot. Time to move on to someone else. I'm mostly disturbed by the draft pick compensation. I wasn't aware of how that worked, and it just seems weird that the compensation is determined by what else the Yanks do this offseason. They get rewarded for taking all the best players. . .
  7. Not sure where you live, but there will be a sports collectibles show in West Allis this weekend. . .the Gonzaga Hall show. I've been to the show a couple of times (others on this board are much more regular attendees than me). You may find something signed by Aaron there.
  8. That seems like a fine price. Check out www.authenticstadiumseats.com I think this was the guy who was set up at The National Sports Collectors Convention this summer in Chicago. If not him, there are a couple of other guys who are a google search away. The best deal would be to find someone locally, as shipping would be a significant expense. And you'll need stands as well. When they ripped them out of County Stadium and sold them, they came with metal base stands, so you can actually use them. They also sold plastic seats, and some people preferred those, but I liked the beat up old wooden ones. Good luck with your search.
  9. MLB.com's has a Tuesday & Thursday Fantasy 411 podcast discussing fantasy baseball. It will help carry me through the long winter. I would also expect them to have some presence on the new MLB channel.
  10. I'm a big fan of Chicago-style Vienna hotdogs. Martino's on 13th & Layton is my favorite. With everything except the sport peppers. I also like Wendy's Spicy Chicken sandwich just as they make it & Culver's regular butterburger. . .Lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup & mustard. Them's eats.
  11. In Singapore, the McDonalds chains all have a chicken sandwich called McSpicy. It's a breaded mostly dark-meat chicken patty. I believe the breading is about 25 percent black & white pepper, and the only thing you taste is the searing burn of pepper in your throat. That pepper burn stays with you throughout the entire cycle of that sandwich's journey through your body, if you understand where I'm going. . . And a couple of weeks ago, they introduced the Mega McSpicy, which is the same sandwich, with two of those flamebombs on them. I don't think I'm going to opt for that one.
  12. The Big Bam is a GREAT biography of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville. As much as has been written about Ruth over the years, Montville was able to unearth some new stuff. Clemente by David Maraniss is awesome. Probably the best baseball biography I've read. The Curt Flood book, A Well Paid Slave, by Brad Snyder is good--though it gets very deep into the legal process, in discussing Flood's case vs. MLB. And I'm currently reading But Didn't We Have Fun, by Peter Morris. It's a very interesting history of baseball from its earliest days until 1870. I'm about halfway through it, and while it hits on the Eckfords and Knickerbockers and Atlantics and other east coast pioneers, there have been a number of Wisconsin references as well.
  13. Andre the Giant called. . .and he said he'll take it.
  14. I'm not in town this weekend, but would like to hear about the show... I've not been to that one, though they've been running a Sun Times show in Chicago for years. . .
  15. Not sure that I'll be tuning in for part 2.
  16. The difficulty with Mussina is that he's pitching at the same time as some obvious lockdown HOF guys. . .Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Roger Clemens & Pedro Martinez. In my mind, he'd come in a distant 7th behind them, and maybe 8th if you throw Schilling's name into that mix. And as a side note. . .even as durable as Mussina has been, it's weird to see that he's still 1400 IP behind Blyleven.
  17. As much as I'd love to see the Brewers win the World Series, it would be a little hard to celebrate knowing that I had a chance to keep people from getting blown up. So I choose E.
  18. Seinfeld. . .George Costanza is my favorite all-time tv character. SCTV. . .Especially Joe Flaherty as Sammy Maudlin, Eugene Levy as Bobby Bittman, John Candy as Johnny LaRue. Just Awesome. The Office--Ricky Gervais. . .I just haven't seen enough of the US one. I've heard it's great. The whole run of the original is wonderful. The Gary Shandling Show. . .Gary's stepping in and out of character was really clever. Dick Van Dyke Show. . .It doesn't induce tons of laughs, but it does induce lots of smiles. As a kid, I thought they would be the coolest neighbors to have. MST3K. . .The Joel Hodgson ones. And the absurdity of making a robot out of a gumball machine (Tom Servo)--very funny. South Park. . .For some reason, I can laugh at Mr. Hankey, but it turned too mean to me when Timmy and Jimmy duked it out. Arrested Development. . .I haven't seen many, but each one has me liking it. Newsradio. . .I loved Phil Hartman. The Simpsons. . .The Cy Young of tv comedies. The vast body of work is staggering, though I don't like the Halloween stuff.
  19. I seldom hear people whistling anymore. Like musical whistling. Why is that? Is it rude? Dorky? Do people not have the skill to do it? I grew up in a house where my Dad whistled tunes often, and I picked up on the habit, and consider myself to be capable. Yet whenever I whistle in public, I get self conscious about it and usually stop. And then other times, I don't give a rip what anyone thinks and I whistle away.
  20. Kevin Keating is selling this Jordan 3x5 for $1250. He's good for some rarities, if you're ready to start peeling away the big bills. . . http://www.qualityautogra...ry_signed_unlined_3x5.jpg The rest of his stuff is at www.qualityautographs.com He's been in the autograph business for years, has a great reputation, and just joined PSA /DNA as an authenticator.
  21. Great interview, and a good read. I thought Karl had a reputation for being a little headstrong during his days. . .not the nicest guy in the world. But he represented himself very well, and seems to be a good guy. Thanks for doing the interview and posting it here.
  22. By many accounts, Shea Hillenbrand is a guy of questionable character. Add to that his inability to take 4 balls and I'd pass.
  23. FJM was the first sportsblog I got hooked on, and it became the standard for funny, critical responses to bad/lazy writing. I loved the no photos, no comments, pure word-ness of it. Good stuff.
  24. Are either of them named "Chantelle"? Cuz that's not the only thing that they did that might bug you. . .
  25. I would take player B. More good things can happen with more hits.
