  1. I would put the bat at $60-$75 and the ball at $40-$50.
  2. offend our ticket rep Huh? I think you're placing a ticket rep way higher on the social strata than you need to. This is not an audience with the Pope you're talking about. . .or even approaching an attractive woman for a date. What do you think the repercussions would be if his answer is "no"? It seems as though you're getting a pretty amazing deal as it is. . .but these are tough economic times and who knows. . .maybe you'll score some extra stuff from a team that's struggling to sell tickets. Just ask the guy to sweeten the deal a little and see what he can come up with. . . I don't think he'll shut you out of the building.
  3. Got it. . .I was looking for an opening to take a high and mighty posture. . . Alas, denied.
  4. I think this is one of those things where people need to be reminded that steroids weren't even illegal in the US until about 1990. I'm not sure where you're going with this. . . Are you suggesting that A-Rod and others who took steroids after 1990 should be treated lightly? Should we not be concerned that they broke the law?
  5. I always look to the Denny Neagle contract as the ultimate bust, as he turned out to be such a loser, on and off the field. Glad that it got the placement it did.
  6. Michael Phelps is delighted with the timing of this story. As much as I would like the steroid stuff to go away, I also want to know the truth. So if someone is being a hypocrite about their performance and legacy, then I want to know. Congrats to Selena Roberts for breaking this story--groundbreaking stuff for women sports reporters.
  7. Baseball's problems have nothing to do with the NFL. They're the same problems that have been talked about for years. The games take too long. The pace is too slow. They start too late. It's just not a great game for television. For all the problems that the NFL has, it's still a very compelling spectacle. It's predictable that on every play that there will be a lot of activity, and there's a mystery in what the offensive play will be, and how the defense will react. With baseball, there are so many pitches that just result in something unspectacular. And really, the number of variables that can happen until there is action, is very limited. The pitcher can either throw the ball to home, or to a base. The baserunner can either steal, bluff, or stay put. The hitter can either swing away, bunt, or take a pitch. Beyond that, nothing really happens until bat meets ball. I'm a baseball fan exclusively, but the game often plays better in the background than as the centerpiece of excitement.
  8. That was a very nice note from someone who seems to be a very nice guy. Good for him on landing his dream job. How about a little more airtime for Kent Sommerfeld after all these years of service? Also a great guy and fellow UW-W alum. . .
  9. Perhaps a film school might be interested in handling your project as a course assignment. Or at least you might find some students who could work on it as a separate project. Just a guess. . . .
  10. I have an account with Fidelity, and occasionally use Fidelity.com for transactions. But truthfully, I'm now a pick-and-stick guy who is only good for one or two transactions per year.
  11. Mark Belling spent a small amount of air time this week chastising the voters for ignoring Burdette. Burdette absolutely should be recognized, as should Del Crandall, Boomer Scott, Jim Slaton & Johnny Logan.
  12. Induction weekend in Cooperstown is enormous, both for the village the Hall of Fame itself. They need to have induction ceremonies every year. So to think that they can go 5 or 8 or 10 years without inducting players from an era is just unrealistic. And they can't just rely on the Joe Gordon and Billy Southworth-type of inductions to get people to visit. They need contemporaries. I suspect that there will be lots of players from this era--those without direct connections to steroids--inducted. Jeter, A-Rod, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Manny, Piazza, Pudge, Griffey, Randy Johnson, Pedro, Mariano Rivera, Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent, Chipper, Biggio. But for Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Clemens, Palmeiro. . .I can't see the BBWAA electing those guys.
  13. I like Smart Money magazine. But that doesn't mean that understand all of it. I'm also at the point where if an investment vehicle is so complex and hard to understand, then I'm not interested in buying it.
  14. While the Orosco pick is a joke, he does have the record of most career pitching appearances, so it's not like voting for Dave LaPoint. Anyway, there's always a guy or two who gets a courtesy vote from a writer as a gesture of goodwill for being a standup guy. I guess Rice is okay. He's not the worst Hall of Famer. I just don't see the love for Andre Dawson. Maybe that's my Cub hatred in me. And Blyleven should definitely be there.
  15. Is there any structure in those suits? Those guys have to have incredible strength in their shoulders and back to be able to keep their arms out like that against that kind of force. And how do you ever practice something like that? One mistake and you're roadkill. In any case, that's a pretty spectacular video.
  16. Is it an official AL Ball? Does it include Darrell Porter and Harvey Kuenn? I think those are the only two deceased guys who might be on it. I'm with FTJ on the value. Depending on condition and how the ink is holding up, it might go for more. Lots of fading, and it could be less.
  17. Did the person die from a bullet wound?
  18. I gave myself and my family a Slingbox, so we can enjoy our home TV programming while overseas this next year. Baseball Tonight, the MLB Network, Brewer broadcasts. . .technology is a wonderful thing!
  19. Congrats to you. . .Marriage is wonderful.
  20. So far, so good. It's a very limited schedule of programming to start, but it's still baseball, and it's not being delivered through an ESPN filter. The hot stove show was solid, and the Larsen game and discussion is very good. I don't think I need to change the channel. Ever.
  21. We're back in the Milwaukee area after several months away, so the snow actually seems exciting and fun. Not sure how long that glee will last, but for now, we're happily digging out these 14 inches. My daughter is 4 1/2, and was running around, jumping in snowpiles, throwing snowballs at me while I was snowblowing the driveway. Fun stuff.
  22. Not sure if you plan on flying with it, or carrying it around, but with a bigger display comes more bulk and weight. I just ordered a new ultraportable Lenovo with an 11.1 inch display. I just grew tired of lugging my big older Dell machine around. I do like Dell, and think they're customer service is top notch. But truthfully, I've had the Dell for 3 1/2 years, and am on my 2nd battery, and only 512 of the 1 GB memory is actually working now. If I were to keep it, I'd be in for another battery and memory upgrade, and then I'd still be stuck with an older machine.
  23. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Melky is roster filler. This is the kind of move the Brewers would have made 10 years ago. Great outfielder. Terrible hitter.
