  1. Pascual Coco has amazing consistency. This is third staight year that he has an ERA of 4.91 at AAA. Thats not much progress, and I doubt he'll be in this organization for more than another week.
  2. I think Yost has decided he's done embarassing Cruz. Enrique is so overmatched its funny, giving him atbats doesn't help his development, it only further destroys his confidance. Cruz should be used only as a pinch runner and defensive replacement.
  3. Welcome aboard Brewjester, and your right on about Ben Ford. Melvin has had some success finding pitchers who are latebloomers because of injuries (Kolb, Obermueller) , heres to hoping Ford is the next.
  4. Burba looks like a different pitcher now that he's in the pen than he was the last few years. As a starter, he threw everything he could dream up at the plate, now he has cut his repertoire down to just the sinker and slider. He's had better control and pitches more aggressive out of the pen. This is the exact same thing Mike Morgan did at the end of his career, and he went on to have a few solid years out of Arizona's bullpen.
  5. I noticed Jim Rushford wasn't in the Indy lineup tonight. I wonder if he's on his way to joining the big club because of an imminent Vanderwal trade?
  6. I agree that major league deals are bad for everyone, but they are worse in some cases than others. Pena was a raw 17 year old when he was given a major league deal. Weeks is much farther along in his development than Pena was, and will be ready for the Majors before he is out of options. The Crew wouldn't land anything close to Weeks at the end of round 1, where the compensation pick would be. Having to carry Weeks on the 40 man roster isn't ideal, but if Enrique Cruz is worth it, than a potential superstar like Weeks if definately worth it.
  7. I thought it was funny when so many people were ripping on the Brewers for not promoting Dereck Lee. The brewers simply new he couldn't handle the next level, but they eventually gave into public opinion, and now everyone knows what the Crew already new. It is good to see Steve Scarborough heatup. He was having a fine season At AA last year intill he got promoted, then he got lost in the shuffle. Massbrew, you've seen him in person, can he handle SS defensively?
  8. What has made this a bad team for years is not that its weaknesses were gaping holes, but that this team has no strengths or star players. Its been years since this team had a hitter have a 900 OPS. D'amico was the last starting pitcher to finish with an ERA under 4, and he did that just once.To improve this team its more important to add a legit #3 or 4 hitter and an ace pitcher than it is to find a better #4 and 5 pitchers or a better hitting SS or backup catcher.
  9. What will make Obermueller a good fit in Miller Park is his ability to get ground balls with that hard sinker. He seems rather polished for a guy that just starting pitching his senior year of college in 99.
  10. I agree massbrew, the Nelson promotion is a real suprise. Nelson didn't hit nearly as well as Clark did before he went to AA, why do they think Nelson will hit in AA?
  11. So many positives for the Crew tonight. Franklyn with another quality start. Dejean thriving in setup role. Keith Osik with big hit and big defensive play against suicide squeeze. Dan Kolb making Texas look like morons for cutting him in the 9th, another gift from Jon Hart. And then the big night for Bill Hall. With his lightning quick bat and his new stance he looks like a young Julio Franco at the plate. Its interesting to hear that Halls new stance was a suggestion of Cecil Coopers. He's a little choppy in the field, but he made up for it tonight with his cannon arm. If the outstanding Brewer coaching staff can smooth out Halls glove to hand exchange, he could stick at SS. Defense at SS will be much more important next year than this year, as I would suspect a ton more groundball pitchers next year.
  12. The important thing for Housman is he a is a groundball pitcher, which is exactly what the Crew needs at Miller Park. He uses 86 mph sinkers instead of 86 mph eye high 4- seamers like Quevedo. Lefties of any form can make it in the bigs, and Housman appears mature beyond his years.
  13. I'm just as excited as anyone about the sudden explosion that is Billy Hall, but he won't be playing SS in Milwaukee anytime soon considering he doesn't even play SS at Indy. He is still error prone for a 2B, SS would be a disaster. I like the idea of leaving him at 2B, since thats where his longterm future is, and it allows him to concentrate on developing as a hitter.
  14. Tonights game again shows the Crew needs to find another righthanded stick. Tonights lineup had a much different fear factor than yesterdays when you have to replace Vandy and Kieschnik with Clark and Ginter. Hopefully the Crew can pick up a young righty swinging OF when it deals one of its veterens.
  15. Ya, that really ruined the game tonight, watching Kieschnik knock the ball around the ballpark instead of watching Kinney feebly wave the stick. I actually love the present set-up of having the DH in the AL to keep players like Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas in baseball but still getting to enjoy the strategicness of NL baseball.
  16. Jason Nelson, check this out , we agree on something. Stopgaps are definately only to be given 1 year deals. $1 million is usually the number, but if its a little more I don't mind since its just a 1 year deal. Ordonez is not better than Clayton, there so similar its earie. Melvin has used stopgaps on 1 year deals very well in Texas, and i think we'll see more of that next year in Milwaukee.
  17. Hall is a possibility at SS, but he would be an adventure defensively. He's on pace for 25 errors at AAA, which would be an improvement over the 42 he had last year, but thats more a result of him playing 2/3s of his games at 2B. Ginter could play 2B, but on a winning team he's best at what his role is now. The usual suspects will be available in free agency (Chris Gomez, Deivi Cruz, Bengi Gill, Rey Sanchez,Rey Ordonez, Jose Vizciano, Jose Hernandez), but unfortunately none are a major upgrade over Clayton. The Crew showed some interest in Alex Cora this past offseason, he could be a cheap stopgap if his trade pricetag isn't too high. If Desi Relaford is available, he'd interest me too. Rich Aurilia will be a FA and won't be back in San Fran because Neifi Perez has a multi year contract there. I have no idea what his pricetag will be , he's on the downside and has little range, but He still might trick a desperate team ( not the Crew) into a multi year deal.
  18. Al, how is letting Hall develop at AAA shortsighted? Also, I dislike EY as much as anyone, but thats mostly because he's the worst defensive 2B in baseball. he's still a better offensive player than Ginter, just look at the OPS. The team should continue to play Clayton, he's doing what hes done every year. Horrid in the 1st half, hot in the 2nd half.
  19. I think it will have a huge impact on Oaklands future that Beane fired the scouting director that found all the talent thats presently on there roster. In Beanes defense , the budget hes forced to work with is just rediculous.
  20. If Zink is looking for 4th round $$ and is planning on attending a small time baseball school like UIC, he should reconsider. A better option for him would be to attend a JC. The Crew has proven time and again they pay DFE players who produce. It might be something he would consider since he was drafted by the in-state team.
  21. Didn't week's Southern team qualify for postseason? Could that cause schedualing conflicts that are keeping the Crew from working out Weeks? Also, isn't it more common for High School players to come in for workouts than college players? I be shocked if the Crew wasn't enamored with Weeks, he is the field rat type the Melvin wants to add to the organization and he has special physical tools. His work ethic, speed, lightning quick hands, bat control, and soft hands with some power potential reminds me a little of Paul Molitor. Neither player had quite enough arm to play SS, and Paulie was raw defensively early on too. There was talk of making Paulie a CF early , just as with Weeks, but all Weeks needs is more reps at 2nd.
  22. Maybe Melvin isn't supposed to name Loewen, but he did anyway. On mondays Brewers Ticket, he mentions Weeks , Young, Loewen, and Tim Staufer.
  23. Interesting to see Tim Staufer mentioned . On Brewers Ticket before Mondays Brewer/SD game, Melvin mentioned 4 players by name; Weeks, Young, Lowen, and Staufer.
  24. I agree, theres just too much risk of injury with pitchers, the bat is the way to go. I'm pulling for Weeks, because a dominant hitting 2B is such a rare commodity.
