  1. From todays game notes at milwaukeebrewers.com Signing: The Brewers announced they had come to terms with right-hander Omar Aguilar, their 30th-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. Aguilar was assigned to rookie Helena. I don't think many of us expected him to sign, after he went unsigned after being drafted in the 8th round last year, turning down $50K from the Giants before the draft. He had a commitment to Oklahoma. This is a pleasant suprise, he's reportedly a hardthrower, but had a bout with elbow tendinitis in 2005.
  2. edit: 1st Brewer afiliate to give up a run is a rotten egg!!!!!! No rotten eggs on the farm yet. Brevard County 5, Jupiter 0 Tim Dillard goes the distance, striking out 7, no walks. West Virgina 2, Lake County 0 Five pitchers combine to K 11. Alcides Escobar with 3 hits, 2 steals, 0 errors.
  3. I think the reason Magruder was used as the PH was because it was leading off the inning. They both have the same OBA versus righties, and Magruder gives the option of stealing a base. Helms has done some nice work lately, but its all been against lefties. I'm sure Yost had concerns with Helms long swing versus Dempsters heavy sinker.
  4. I don't know that he'll ever be a third baseman. Its obvious you've never seen Braun play 3B, and your just reading what other hacks have wrote about him. Those of us who've seen him play know the defensive questions are a joke. He could possibly still play SS. He will likely be an outstanding defensive 3B because of his superior athletism and work ethic. As for how he projects with the bat, never bet against bat speed. Collegiate players who've put up big offensive numbers and failed as pro's all were the same type of players. They were fully developed and matured hitters with slow bats. The Jeremy Browns of the world.
  5. I guess since I ripped the Brewers last year for signing to few draft picks I better give them props for getting so many signed so quick this year. They've already signed more players than last year, and they have a couple of months to add some more. Walkoffhomer has given us good evidence that a Weeks signing could be eminent. That would be a huge bonus. He's small now, but Rickie was the same size coming out of high school. If he matures late like his brother did, the Brewers will have the steal of the draft. He wasn't an 8th rounder on talent, it was signabilty I believe.
  6. Braun doesn't have that luxury as not many guys are paid to be like David Bell...gritty leaders with some power as their only tool. Fortunetly, that doesn't describe Braun. Baseball America had Braun as one of the fastest college players in the draft, and he had 21 steals in 22 attempts this year. He also hits for average as well as power. While many compared Ryan Zimmerman to Jeff Cirillo before the draft for his ability to spray linedrives, it was Braun who hit for the higher average. With Hardy going off the power 50 soon, Braun should take his slot. Toby won't put him that high, as Toby thinks he knows draft prospects better than the entire Brewer scouting department. Just remember last season, when Toby gave us the comedy of ranking 4th round pick Josh Baker ahead of 3rd rounder Josh Wahpehpah. The 20 year old Wahpehpah has been good with great peripherils at A ball, while the 23 year Baker has been crushed at the same level.
  7. Braun didn't get many defensive chances , but when he did he really showed quick, soft hands. You don't realize watching him in the field that he's a shade over 6'2". He showed more range than Miami's SS, though 3B will be Braun's longterm position as he'll continue to fill out and get stronger. He's already added 10 pounds of muscle since enrolling at Miami, impressive for a guy that is a real dedicated student. I expect him to really add strength fast now that he'll have more free time. Toby statement of "Braun will be playing OF within 2 years looks like the biggest misstatement of the year on this board this side of "Weeks is overrated".
  8. To me, Braun bears a strong resemblance facially to someone well known, but I cannot place it exactly....anybody have the same thought that can help me out? The Karate Kid.
  9. This was an Athletics-like draft in its college/high school makeup. I don't think this was an A's style draft at all. The A's had been picking all the players from major 4 year schools. The Brewers took very few players from 4 year schools, and many of them come from tiny places like the 2 players from Embry-Riddle. Speaking of that school, they played in Appl-eton for the D3 college world series. Anyone from the Fox Vally area see them play in person?
  10. ESPN will either show the Miami/Nebraska or the Baylor/ Clemson game at 11:00 AM today. Hers to hoping its Miami, so we can see our future Scott Rolen.
  11. I'm ecstatic the Brewers selected Braun. He was the second best collegiate hitter this year behind Gordon and he's extremely project-able. His 51 at-bat stint at the Cape Cod league is so overblown. He was still recovering from a ribcage strain at the time. The scouts that questioned his defense were obviously too lazy to re-scout him in the second half of the season when he played near errorless ball. I think his athleticism will allow him to be a better defender than Alex Gordon, and he's already a much better hitter then Zimmerman. Getting the 2nd best 3B in the draft is no reach, its a very lucky pick at #5.
  12. He definately has a hitch. Watch Goron bat then watch Braun and it's very noticeable. Braun is a potential stud, but he worries me. Don't be too worried. Braun has the same stance, swing (and hitch) Sheffield and Julio Franco have. It works ok for them. They do play this thing they call "defense" in major league baseball, right? So you'd take Joe Crede over Aramas Rameriz because Crede is the better defender?
  13. I really hope Tulo and Zimmerman are off the board when the Crew picks, because niether player hits with enough power for me. Brauns offensive numbers blow them away, and I don't see how either of them are more projectable than Braun. Batman, that Alan Schwartz article you linked was outstanding. Thanks.
  14. I have to agree with Bill that Braun looks pretty impressive, not sure how a comparison to Sean Burroughs can occur when the guy had a .723 SLG, and has the athletic ability to play SS Zimmerman is the player some are comparing to Burroughs, not Braun. Braun is more like Rolenhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Isn't it nice that we're not discussing a prep righty with the #5 pick? This year I just feel that everyone is going to be happy with whomever the Brewers pick. Like I've said before, Jack Z. and company are in a great position. We can wait and see who falls, if anyone, and if not, there should be at least 2-3 solid players to choose from, Braun included. I agree totally. It just seems like our options this year at #5 are so much better than last year. Patrick how would Maybin and Braun fit into last years raft class.
  15. While it would obviously take Maybin longer to get to the Bigs than Braun, I think he'll move faster than some suggest. He won't be a slow mover like Krynzel. Maybins bat is just so much better coming in than Krynzels was. Maybin enters as just as good of hitter as Prince was, and I'd expect him to move just as fast. The other parts of the game, like tracking flyballs and running the bases, are things that come natural to Maybin. His self-discipline and work ethic (things that Prince doesn't really have) will help him polish his skills quickly.
  16. While I'd prefer Maybin, 1 exciting thing about Braun is he is ready to jump right into A ball, just like Weeks and Gwynn did. Since he has played against better competition, he's possibly better prepared than Weeks was. Braun could also be in AA for 2nd season in 2006, just like the other 2 did.
  17. Braun seems a little too much like Antone Williamson for my tastes. I don't see any similarities at all. Williamson was an average athlete, Braun has outstanding athleticism, he was even able to play SS his 1st 2 years of college. Williamson had no speed, Braun has very good speed. Williamson had a line drive stoke with little home run power, Braun has 16 homers to go with a slugging % over 720. Williamson had shoulder problems in college, Braun is healthy. Williamson was allergic to weight rooms, Braun is excellently conditioned and has added good weight since enrolling at Miami.
  18. Colby, why isn't there more talk of Braun to Milwaukee? He has hit as well as anyone in the country, including Gordon, the last time I saw his stats. Has he fallen off? He's a terriffic athlete, so he's projectable. He might be a little raw defensively at 3B, but that partly because he was starting at SS as a freshman. Theres alot more footwork technique at 3B. He excites me more than Zimmerman, because he's simply a better offensive player, with real power, and he has the upside to develop into a star. Another question Colby, what position has Braun played in offseason baseball, has he played mostly 3rd? I love the idea of getting argueably the best hitter in the draft.
  19. Bruso is another example of the deals that keep Brian Sabean afloat in San Fran. He constantly recognizes prospects that won't make it, but look worthwhile to others. Sabean then deals them for proven major league talent.
  20. Overbay has dropped two foul fly balls near the dugout. The first one hit him in the shoulder, the second one hit him in the glove. I guess thats progress. Great to see Cappy overcome it. He's going to be nice this year. ( please stay healthy)
  21. If you think that Nedly's adoration and preference for Helms is just a fantom of many people's imaginations (including mine) then you might actually be the one with a conspiracy theory. If Yost loved Helms so much , than why didn't Helms play last August and Septemember. He had an OPS over 800 in both months. Its because Yost finally had a better option in Branyan. I love undeniable facts.
  22. This Giants team makes me feel young again.
  23. OK I am truely sick. The lineup looks like the opening day lineup (except Magruder is in CF due to Clark's health) and guess who's the starting 3B? Yep, Nedly Yost Jr. xis, i think that's because branyan has the flu. And another conspiracy thwarted. Let it go already.
  24. It has been rumored in the past that The Brewers were less than enamored with Matt Fords work ethic. His laziness might have just cost him a job. Work ethic is contagious, and I'm sure they didn't want his rubbing off on the real prospects.
  25. Paronto is obviously fairly intelligent, as signing with Milwaukee is a wise move for any middle reliever.
