  1. Agreed. Phillips generates a lot more bat speed than Schafer and is more of a natural pull hitter. His offensive upside is more like a hybrid of Christian Yelich and Travis Shaw and if he doesn't make it as a hitter, that arm certainly would make him a relief pitcher option.
  2. That's why mega dollar long term deals to pitchers don't make sense. Jon Lester is the highest paid Cub starter and no better than the 6th best they have. It'll be opportunity time for guys like Burnes, Ortiz, Peralta, Derby etc. Hopefully what we've seen from Woodruff continues into next year. Hader to the rotation if they can come up with some new bullpen arms. Guerra probably deserves another chance too. I'm of the belief that the major damage to Nelson's shoulder didn't occur with his slide. The slide hyper-extended the shoulder and caused the rotator cuff strain (which would have ended his season anyway), but he might well have already been pitching with a partial labrum tear. So in that sense it might have actually saved his career. If the partial tear went undetected until it became a full tear, then he might have been done. The prognosis that he'll miss a chunk of 2018 is vague and not necessarily dire. All it means that he won't be ready to go full bore in Arizona in March. That's not surprising. He's going to likely need 3 months minimum from the time he starts light throwing to build up not just the shoulder but his full arm and they now know he'll need 3-4 months rest and healing from the surgery before he can even start that.
  3. Guerra should have replaced Wilkerson last night. I simply cannot understand why Guerra is not being used. He's throwing it a lot better in the few times we've seen him. Hopefully Davies shakes off his last start and gets them into the 7th. Then it'll be Hughes, Drake, Wang, and Williams in a mix and match the rest of the way. Jeffress is probably available for an out or two. Maybe Knebel for an out or two in the 9th. Going to need both Wang and Drake to face Rizzo. Swarzak, Hader and Barnes probably not available at all. Guerra early if needed. Garza and Torres to eat innings late in a blowout either way.
  4. I guessing they didn't start him last Friday so he could become acclimated. He's definitely an X factor these final couple weeks. I'd have Guerra ready too though.
  5. Phillips has been impressive with the bat as well. The numbers don't wow you yet but he's not looking overmatched and he's been getting on base.
  6. Chatwood or Alex Cobb seem to be the level of FA the Brewers could go after. Like all FA pitchers, they'll have to overpay as there will be a demand for those guys. Chacin is another guy out there who won't break the bank. A trade for Samardzija is also worth exploring if SF picks up a little salary.
  7. Nothing tops 78-79. Not even close. 81-82 were great but the guts of the 81 season was lost to the strike. That's a pain that for me that even an appearance in what was a convoluted playoff didn't erase.
  8. 20 year old Frankie Rodriguez was not on the Angels 40 man roster on August 31st, 2002. He was added in September and was a star in the playoffs that year.
  9. If his turn to hit comes up in the top of the 2nd, I think Jeffress just goes 1 inning. Frankly to me it makes zero sense. Counsell is way over thinking this. Start Wilkerson who's started all year. Use Jeffress if needed to get out of early jam. Then stick Guerra in there for 2-3 innings.
  10. The tanking of teams post trade deadline is killing the game. Not to discount what they've done, it's amazing, but half of the 22 game streak was against teams in full tanking mode, the Tigers and White Sox. I'd be more impressed if it was May. Watching the "effort" put forward by the tanking Mets against the Cubs was a case in point. That's major league baseball? I can't remember a time when we've seen more double digit scoring against teams throwing out minor league pitchers night after night.
  11. Nice that Packers have a night game Sunday too. Should mean more tickets sold for Sunday's game. Don't forget Davies has been much better on the road though.
  12. Bumping up Anderson on three days rest who threw 5 easy innings Saturday is one thing. That was pure luck. How often do the Brewer bats allow that? Bringing back Davies on short rest to face the Cubs could be counter productive.
  13. [sarcasm]Boy, I hope he was at least playing catch the last week or so.[/sarcasm] You misread another of my posts apparently. I said the guys who didn't pitch in the AAA playoffs had shut it down. That was in response to suggestions for Freddie Peralta and/or Burnes. Wilkerson did pitch in AAA playoffs which just ended Sunday so that didn't apply to him or Jungmann. I also said it would be either Jungmann or Wilkerson, Garza or Guerra.
  14. Can we get a source that you have for this information? How do you know what those guys are doing? Guys shut it down when their season ends and go home. I don't need a source for that. Unless they were told to be ready, that's what they're doing. Not sure why the Brewers would have prime prospects throwing at this point. If their intention all along were to bring them up (which I doubt), why not just do it?
  15. All the guys who didn't pitch in AAA playoffs haven't pitched in nearly 2 weeks and likely have basically shut it down by this point. They aren't likely to be taking days to throw as they would normally between starts. That's why it's between Jungmann, Wilkerson, Guerra, or Garza and the longer they go without calling the first two up and keep trotting Guerra out for one inning, the more it seems they will die with Garza.
  16. My rotation starting Friday: Fri 9/15: Jungmann Sat 9/16: Davies Sun 9/17: Woodruff Mon 9/18: Anderson Tues 9/19: Suter Wed 9/20: Jungmann Thu 9/21: Davies Fri 9/22: Woodruff Sat 9/23: Anderson Sun 9/24: Suter Tue 9/26: Davies Wed 9/27: Woodruff Thu 9/28: Jungmann Fri 9/29: Anderson Sat 9/30: Davies Sun 10/1: Suter Anderson and Davies each make 4 more starts with both getting one game vs. Cubs and one game vs. Cards. The Cub games could be irrelevant anyway if they head into them 6 back, but if they are within 4, they'll count double. and 3 out of 4 would be absolute necessity.
  17. Yup. His rotation manipulation was a signal to the team that this series didn't mean anything. It's subtle messages like that destroy a team's momentum. I'm confused. If they throw a 5th starter on Friday instead of Davies, wouldn't that send a signal to the team that that game/series doesn't mean anything? No it would give the 5th starter a better chance, and allow Davies to pitch Saturday in Florida and Thursday against the Cubs rather than pitching Friday vs. Marlins and Wednesday vs. Pirates. Then Counsell could go with Davies, Woodruff, Suter & the pen and Anderson in Cub series. At this point every game is critical but games vs. Cubs are do or die.
  18. Here's the issue. None of the names mentioned to fill the 5th spot will have pitched for almost 2 weeks. Why isn't Jungmann up throwing simulated games? Another issue is if Davies starts Friday, he won't be available for the Cubs series. So they should have 5th starter go Friday.
  19. Jungmann and Guerra have both had success in the big leagues fairly recently. Wilkerson is no kid either and he's has nothing to prove in the minors. Any or some combo of those 3 makes sense as they could be in the mix in 2018 in some capacity. Garza' s had his chance and didn't respond and will be gone.
  20. Guerra's velocity has been back since returning. He was hitting 95 in both his relief outings. Question for him is getting ahead so he can use his out pitch. Garza was on a short leash his last start and still allowed 6 runs.
  21. Why isn't Guerra in the discussion? He seemed to work out his control issues in CS and since he's returned he's hit 95 regularly in his couple of bullpen stints. Sure he gave up a couple runs, but both were in blowouts when he was just focusing on getting strikes. Taking a chance that the 2016 Guerra shows up with his mid 90's fastball and his still very hard to hit splitter makes more sense to me than trotting Garza back out there. He certainly should be able to go 5 good innings, as he was up to 90 pitches in his next to last start at CS.
  22. I don't see them moving the games. Irma didn't result in the death and destruction many feared. Stock market is up significantly today because it wasn't a total disaster. As long as most of the power can be restored and they'll have thousands of crews working on it and the major roads cleared, they'll play in Miami.
  23. Why post it in blue? It's likely true and there's nothing wrong with that thinking. The big club in a hot race and they are short on starting pitching.
  24. In Jungmann's first 16 major league starts he posted an ERA of 2.42. Heck he was a dark horse ROY candidate in 2015 until he faltered down the stretch. He's coming off a solid AAA season. Could he make 4 solid starts for the Brewers now? I see no reason why he couldn't unless his control issues resurface. His walk rate at AAA was a bit high even this year at 4.1 per 9 IP.
  25. Wrigley is a tough OF with the wind blowing in. As for 2B, he's the 4th best 2B on the roster.
