  1. Brewers don't need to leapfrog any other teams at this point. As long as they stay within 4 games of either the WC or the division with a clear field in front, they are within reach until the last 15 games or so. Once it's down to 15 games, they'll need to be within 3 games max. Odds are better at the wild card because either the Rockies or D-Backs could stumble.
  2. I would have preferred trading one of the two and giving Cooper a shot, but alas Stearns gifted Cooper to the Yankees so I'd keep both Thames and Aguilar for 2018.
  3. Phillips will be back on the next homestand. I think he could contribute big time.
  4. Bet on Sept. 1. Whether or not it's in the pen or starting depends on what other guys do the next 10 days.
  5. Phillips has been making great strides since his brief major league time. He's making more consistent contact. I see him playing a huge role down the stretch for Brewers.
  6. Two teams are within reach and no other team in between. Every game is big.
  7. I'd rather see them add Rene Garcia to the 40 man, DFA Susac, and expose Nottingham. Garcia's been able to produce in limited action and that's a nice attribute for catching depth.
  8. They might want to hold on to Rene Garcia for catching depth if they were to DFA Susac and he got claimed.
  9. Garza's ERA up to 4.81. If he ever did have trade value, it's disappearing quickly.
  10. Been advocating this for a while. I think we're in the minority. They appear content with Garza as long as he is not horrible.
  11. Eyeroll. Only irrational fans think they're "on the take". It has happened in the NBA. It can happen in baseball. But too many umps are simply incompetent or unable to bear down on every pitch.
  12. I think that's exactly what they'll do. Tough spot for Anderson to return, but hopefully he's up to it. They'll have choices in September. Guerra, Suter, Woodruff and perhaps Jungmann will all be around.
  13. Umps have pretty much always had that. And I think 9 out of 10 actually is a good standard...especially when the majority of those 10 pct are pitches that are borderline calls. It's not like you see a ball over a guys head or a foot outside being called a strike very often. What games are you watching? A trained chimp could get 8 of 10 right. Routinely night after night umps miss multiple calls that aren't even borderline. The tolerance rate for non borderline calls should be 100% correct. If you watched this guy Chris Conroy yesterday in the Reds-Cubs game he was an absolute joke. At one point a Red pitcher threw what should have been a third strike practically in the middle of the zone and it was called a ball. Later a Red hitter correctly assumed he'd be called out on a pitch that was clearly a strike and took two steps to the dugout before realizing Conroy missed the call. 90% overall is a terrible percentage. I'd bet the best umps are more like 97-98%. That means the worst are well below 90%. Too much is riding on these games. Balls and strike calls affect outcomes of games. The technology is available now. Manfred just doesn't want to upset the umpires union. At the very least, managers should get 3 challenges a game on balls and strikes. That might eliminate the most egregious.
  14. The leash cannot be longer. Others struggle and get demoted......quite a few actually this year. Villar plays regularly, leads off, fills in at center, and is treated like he is his 2016 version. Fact is, if he had an option, he isn't here. That is what I cannot get passed. Couldn't agree more. I don't get the "Villar is so talented stuff". So talented? He was never ranked above 94th as a prospect and that was one year by one ranking service. He was brought up in Houston when they were in full tanking mode because he was all they had at the time. Houston gave him up for Cy (not Young) Sneed. He had a career year in 2016 at age 25. He caught the league off guard with his aggressive style and had an extremely high BABIP. He also led baseball in errors and fanned 174 times. Teams adjusted to his style and found ways to induce soft contact when he wasn't striking out which he still does a ton for a guy with modest power. Old timers remember Pedro Garcia. He was 2nd in AL ROY race in 1973 after leading the league in doubles and banging out 15 HR which was a lot for a 2B in those days. Villar's decline reminds me of Garcia. Garcia's inability to make contact caught up with him. Same with Villar.
  15. I believe it's simply a matter of time before hitters adjust and the extreme shifting disappears.
  16. While it's true there is no guarantee on either Brinson or Phillips, the fact is they need the opportunity to show it one way or another in 2018. Another year behind Broxton won't afford enough opportunities. Now they could keep Broxton and Phillips and deal Brinson, who likely has the most value of the three anyway. Brinson should not be untouchable for the right return. But they can't keep both Brinson and Broxton, unless they deal Santana, which isn't out of the question but not likely either.
  17. They are going to miss Bumgarner in SF, and they are rolling into Denver with hot bats. They should have swept the Dodgers in Milwaukee and frankly the Dodgers are due to lose one series. If they can go 5-4 they'll be very much in it. Projecting results based on schedules is tricky. More important is how you are playing rather than who you are playing.
  18. I have My Pillow. Ads are spot on. Can even sleep on nights when bullpen blows leads.
  19. Unless Arcia is sore, or Walker gets flipped at the end of August, I don't see Dubon as a given. Now Phillips is a given. Guerra will be back. Suter is a sure thing. Wang and Webb are likely. My longshot is Nick Ramirez.
  20. Walker is not going to command anything close to $15 million a year. He'll ask for around 3 years $33 million range, but will have to settle for 2 years in the $17 million ($8.5 mil per year) range with an option. Brewers could be a match at that number. Hoping Villar rebounds is foolish. If you put all your eggs in his basket and he's hitting .220 on Mothers Day again next year, then what do you do? Villar isn't solid enough defensively to be a utility option either.
  21. New ownership trade the face of the franchise? I doubt it.
  22. Votto has no trade clause I believe and his 5 and 10 rights kick in in September. In the past he's expressed his wish to stay in Cincy. So I don't think he's going anywhere. Would love to have him but it's not happening.
  23. He had 15 of those 17 HR by July 1st. Only hit 2 after that. Not sure what happened. Maybe he enjoyed major league life style a little too much. Maybe he was simply a AAAA player that couldn't sustain it in the big leagues. Greater emphasis in those days was on being complete hitters. Walton swung for the fences and would fit in better in today's game. Career 185 HR in AAA. That's impressive.
  24. While he is doing very well in AA, he's almost 3 years older than the competition and it's his first year pitching pro ball. I could see him next season if he's still on this path but in two weeks might be jumping the gun a bit. That being said, Espino and Houser have no business on the 40 so if they wanted to move on from them and add a lefty, I'd be okay with it. Lets see how he performs in low leverage situations. He can go multiple innings by hitting for himself too. He could also be tried for against one lefty bat in key situations. He's a minor league FA after this year if not added to roster. Why not give him a look? It's pretty impressive to start your pro career as a pitcher at AA and perform as well as he has.
  25. A guy they'll need to create a spot for in September is Nick Ramirez. Kind of surprised he hasn't gotten a shot by now as the need for LH relievers is pretty obvious. To get one who could bat for himself makes even more sense as a bullpen savor in blowouts.
