  1. What's so difficult about this? Barring injury, Nelson, Davies, Anderson and Woodruff are locks. The 5th spot will go to either Hader or Guerra. If the Brewers fall back and don't contend, then they'll put Nelson or Anderson on the market at the deadline. If they do contend, they'll use their pitching depth in the system to acquire difference making talent to bolster the lineup or add a pitcher.
  2. I think it's been said a few times before but we should probably ignore the Cubs for now. I think it's highly unlikely we catch them at this point. We should focus on the wild card spots and hopefully set it up so that Davies is throwing against the Dbacks. Hard to ignore the Cubswhen the Brewers still have 7 games left against them. I don't think anyone's ignoring the Cubs, but it's best to not focus on what they're doing right now that they're on a bit of a roll. No need to get frustrated and start pressing. Win games no matter who you play and let the wild card/division sort itself out.
  3. Guerra was pulled after 58 pitches of shutout ball Wednesday night. No reason to pull him there unless to save him to come back on 3 days rest and pitch Sunday.
  4. Arizona has separated itself, so catching them seems a stretch. Rockies are in cross hairs at this point. They have 8 game trip starting the 7th with 4 in LA and 4 in Arizona. That's when they should be vulnerable. 18-11 the rest of the way gets it done one way or another. Go 9-3 vs. the Pirates and the Reds, then 9-8 vs everyone else.
  5. The Brewers need professional hitters. I've never seen Braun's plate discipline worse than it is now. Maybe it's been all the off days. They should seriously consider signing Walker in the offseason. Shaw's getting pitches to hit but more often than not he's taking them or fouling them off. Santana's got flaws but he's been driving the ball but the other guys need to step up.
  6. Guerra pulled after just 58 pitches tonight. Could he be making the start Sunday instead of Garza?
  7. And the best HS pitcher drafted by the Brewers out of Hawaii in 2014 is.....12th rounder Jordan Yamamoto? Loved the curveball in that video.
  8. When Barnes first arrived last year he featured a plus fastball and a devastating slider. He's more or less ditched the slider in favor of a cutter. I don't think he's really mastered a cutter to the point where he's consistent enough with it and doesn't command the fastball well enough to get ahead of hitters and use the slider as a put away pitch.
  9. I don't think it's all that awkward. Thank him for his efforts and part ways. He'll still collect his checks. With the pitching they have close to the major leagues, there's no way he's been in their plans for 2018 anyway and he's not been pitching well now for nearly a month. They need an alternative to him the rest of the way, either internal or from outside and have today and tomorrow to do something to get a veteran like a Chacin or a Gonzalez.
  10. Amen. Heck why not pick up Miguel Gonzalez if you don't trust Suter or Jungmann? He's got 7 quality starts in his last 8.
  11. How about Matt Joyce? He'd be a nice veteran LH bat on days when Braun rests and a big LH bench threat late in games. He would free up Perez to play more in CF.
  12. Denard Span is still out there. Is he worth pursuing? He comes with a significant contract through 2018 so unless the Giants picked up a lot of salary, he wouldn't cost anything of significance. He's not the player he once was, but at 33 he should have a little left in a more hitter friendly environment and his defensive regression shouldn't be as noticeable in a smaller park.
  13. Unbelievably, that's more than they got for Scooter.
  14. I'll take the Bat Boy. No pitcher in the game has baffled the Dodgers like Davies this year. Two full years now in the big leagues, 29-16 and still just 24. That's not luck.
  15. Why limit them to trading him for a "real prospect"? Sure they can do that, but they need useful late inning arms in the pen, and clearly need an upgrade at 2B. Only about a 1/4 of "real prospects" have significant impact in the major leagues anyway. If they limited the market on Thornburg to prospects, they wouldn't have landed Travis Shaw. Broxton should have value similar to that of Thornburg.
  16. Count me among the dinosaurs that value run producers. It's not like the guys at the top of the order at Carolina have been on base machines. Some guys have a knack for hitting with men on base. Some don't. Would like to see him spend a short time at Biloxi next year and move on to AAA. With Shaw around, no rush but he could hit enough to be in the 1B mix by 2019.
  17. The same could be said for Wren and he plays a position where they aren't as deep and he's a better hitter right now than Dubon. For that matter, they could opt to add Quinten Barry.
  18. I don't see any reason for either Dubon or Rivera with the crowded middle infield they have now. Initially, it will just be Bandy (when he's healthy), Woodruff, Guerra, Phillips and Wang, After the playoffs, they'll likely add Jungmann and either Tyler Webb or Nick Ramirez from Biloxi. Maybe Wren, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If Ramirez isn't added to the 40 man, he becomes a minor league FA. He's been too good as a first year pitcher to let go so why not just bring him up?
  19. He's been worse than Garza and Suter away from Petco. 6.90 ERA and a .304/.377/.508 batting line. Chacin's 2017 WAR per BR is 2.5. Per fangraphs it's 1.8. His 2.5 WAR on BR is better than Jimmy Nelson's 2.0 and Zach Davies' 1.8. Garza's is 0.2 and 0.8. Suter's is 0.8 and 1.0. Those take in park factors.
  20. Dodgers just put Alex Wood and Cody Bellinger on the DL. Lets see that means the Brewers won't face Kershaw, Wood or Darvish this weekend. Who said this isn't the Brewers year?
  21. Orf's success has been greatly aided by Colorado Springs. Here's his AAA numbers the last two years: 2017: .986 OPS at home vs .781 OPS on road 2016: .913 OPS at home vs .559 OPS on road It doesn't mean he can't contribute to the big league team - I'm just wary of guys like this. If he could play SS, that would help him immensely. But right now, he seems to do exactly what Hernan Perez does. That's going to limit him opportunities. Perez has the talent to be a regular at multiple positions. Orf is not comparable but he's a guy that puts the ball in play and is solid defensively at 2B and 3B. His numbers at CS are inflated some but he's been a pesky type hitter at every level. As a 25th guy on a roster, they could do worse.
  22. Nelson left a lot of balls over the middle of the plate in his last two starts. He's allowed 19 hits in his last 10 innings. That's a concern as he's well on his way to his career high in innings. It's about who gives you the best chance in early October. A fresher Anderson likely gives them the best chance. Chances are the Brewers won't nail down a spot until the final days anyway, so the discussion is probably moot. It could end up being Davies if it's his turn in the rotation. Davies is a cool customer, and they could do a lot worse.
  23. I'd take Anderson simply because he's fresher. Nelson's shown some signs of wear and tear recently. Anderson's been every bit as good as Nelson this year.
  24. The Brewers should benefit more from the expanded rosters than their competition. They'll add needed OF depth in a red hot Phillips. They'll add at least one lefty out of the pen. If they choose, they can mix and match starters at the back end of rotation. With addition of a much needed vet bat like Walker and return of the pre-injury Anderson, the outlook improved dramatically in the past week. Good news too is Garza's next start is a day game. Throughout his career Garza has been better in the day than at night. His ERA this year is a half run better in day games. For his career, it's more than a half run difference, 3.62 to 4.36.
