  1. Wish they had high definition back in the day when Johnny Logan went after Don Drysdale or when Eddie Mathews went after Frank Robinson when Robinson spiked him sliding into 3rd. Then there was the Gantner, Piniella, Mike Ferraro brawl in 1979. That was a classic.
  2. Hader dominated again tonight. He's got around 400 pro innings. Chris Sale, who Hader's delivery has been compared to had 14 IP in the minors total. Brewers are risking stunting his development and certainly are hurting his earning power and that's not going to sit well with his agent. Brewers are being pennywise and pound foolish.
  3. Or you know...just let him pitch at AA and wait till next year when he is called up. Why mess with something that isn't broke. He isn't getting called up and sending him to Colorado would just do damage. Careers are short. He's capable of starting in the major leagues now. It's not like he's being blocked. He needs to learn if there is something he's getting away with against minor leaguers that won't work against big league hitters. Not only that but Brewers still need to sell tickets and create a buzz as they go through this process.
  4. Santana has been less than stellar defensively. In fact he's been bad. He lopes after balls that get by him too. Offensively he's a bit too passive and not showing the power many expected. I was never sold on him but I'm trying to keep an open mind given his youth. So far, I still don't see it.
  5. Burgos last 4 starts: 23 IP, 17 Hits, 5 ER, 13 BB, 20 K, 1.96 ERA. Not great, especially the walks, but he's been the steadiest at AAA. Personally, I'd skip Peralta's spot and then I'd get Hader up here as soon as he's past the super 2 threshold likely in a couple weeks. He's not developing facing overmatched AA hitters and he's the best arm in the entire system.
  6. A fun exercise 5 years from now will be "How many pitchers can you name that appeared for Brewers in 2016". The list is growing. The Cubs used 31 as recently as 2013.
  7. All guys are immature. When it's out there in public as an issue, it's hard not to conjure up Johnny Manziel. Being able to handle become wealthy overnight requires a level of maturity that most adults don't possess, much less kids coming out of high school. I'd be very wary of Groome.
  8. This season isn't over. They are 5 games under .500 with the worst starting pitching. If they get to average, a anything's possib!e. I like this lineup right now.
  9. I don't think Villar is going anywhere unless they get a really good offer. We still have a black hole at 3B and Villar could play a vital role on a contending team even if he isn't a starter. I don't think we would get anything good enough to warrant trading him away. Perez is closing that black hole fast but having an extra infielder is not a bad thing.
  10. With a lefty on the mound? Heck no. He isn't that fast and his lead is probably pretty bad. Perez had consecutive seasons of 23, 27, 24, and 28 steals between 2010 and 2013. He had 10 in winter ball. He knows how to steal a base.
  11. I get your points but would only agree if it was a straight up trade. Him as the #1 guy combined with some lower level in the minors guys and you're onto something. MKE also does have a glaring need at 1B so to us that's not an issue. I honestly think if healthy, Schwarber is the potentially the best bat the Cubs have, better than either Rizzo or Bryant. He'd likely be more productive from 2018-21 than would Braun, and could bring a tremendous return if traded a year before he hits FA. It's also possible he'll be back in time to contribute in 2017, or that the Brewers could lock him up longer. Two big questions are: can he play 1B? Gamel was hurt playing there remember too. Second is will he fully recover to the point it won't affect him. I'd hate seeing the all time Brewer leader in many hitting categories being a major piece of Cub championships though. Going to be tough enough for Brewer fans the next few years with Cub fans taking over Miller Park. I certainly wouldn't want some guy in A ball as the centerpiece. I'd want one of their core.
  12. A healthy Schwarber for Braun? Absolutely. But given that his knee injury was extensive, I'm reminded of Mat Gamel who was never able to come back despite several attempts and is now out of baseball. That the Cubs would be sniffing around for a bat they'd control for a while tells me they aren't sure about Schwarber's ability to return to full health either.
  13. We're 54 plate appearances in, and frankly I'm not impressed with his .437 OPS. Sure his OBP is still .315, but what value is he when he can't get a hit when a hit is needed? Yeah he's walked 12 times, but he's also fanned 17 times. So in over half his PA, he's failed to put the ball in play. He's already a -0.3 WAR. I'm less impressed with the walks because for the most part he's batted down in the order where walks generally have less value as the 8th and 9th hitters follow him. With alternatives at both positions he plays doing fine, and the pending arrival at some point of Arcia, freeing up another switch hitter in Villar, it won't be tragic to me if they offered him back to Oakland and ended the experiment. After all, he'll be 27 by the end of the season.
  14. Lepay's great doing football and basketball on radio, but he's not good doing baseball on television. I'm thankful to have access to out of town telecasts.
  15. Villar's an option at 3B, but he might be more valuable as a super utility guy. Think a young Ben Zobrist, who can play all over the infield, is a switch hitter and can easily log over 400 or 500 AB's a season. Zobrist was an integral part of the Rays ascending into contenders and I think a guy like that on a roster is a huge plus. I might even try him in the of. He completely renders Walsh superfluous as he's better in virtually all categories and younger too. Remember Zobrist was primarily a SS early on in his career. In the long run, I see Perez possessing enough power to be better suited to settle in at 3B and be a down in the order (6 or 7 spot) RBI threat typical of the position whereas Villar seems to fit the 2 hole or leadoff spot. Of course, he might end up bringing back a substantial return in a trade too and this team does need pitching help.
  16. Still don't see the love for Cecchini. He's the same age as Perez. Perez is a better defender, better hitter and with the power he's developing (8 HR in winter ball, 3 between AAA and majors so far this year) looks to be a better bet to develop the power consistent with 3B. Cecchini hit for average and showed plate discipline in the low minors but since getting to the higher levels, both his BA and walk rates have slipped noticeably. He never hit for power and he's got a .372 slugging percentage this year. In a similar number of AB's between AAA and majors, Perez is slugging .547. Could Cecchini get himself in the mix there in the future? Sure. I'm especially amazed at the doubters about Perez' power ability. Just look at the guy. He's no little skinny latin middle infielder type. He's a rock at 6'1" 215. In the past he was listed at 185, not small mind you, but he's put on 30 pounds of muscle as his body matured. Of his 2 HR this past week, one was to CF and the other to RF, with nice easy swings. If he got the opportunity to play every day in the big leagues, I easily see 14-18 HR potential there. It would be more, but he uses the entire field, a skill even more valuable in this era of infield shifts.
  17. None of the guys you mentioned are lefthanded? He's better and younger than Capuano? It only makes sense if Capuano is DFA'd to make room. Capuano's only been used in blowouts, and offers nothing as a loogy and has a 1.857 Whip and a 7.43 FIP. In short, Cappy looks like he's done. Nothing wrong with auditioning guys on a revolving basis. Eventually Smith will be back.
  18. Braun protecting his back on that one. Ball wasn't that far from him. Doesn't look like he wants to dive or slide for anything. Angel announcers thought it should have been caught. I did too.
  19. I'd use Thornburg to face the middle of the order, then hope Boyer can close it out against the bottom of their order. A few extra runs would help!
  20. Good job of minimizing the damage. That inning could have really gotten away from him.
  21. Flores is not a CF. A good defensive CF runs that Trout triple down.
