  1. White Sox do not have much in the way of prospects. Carson Fulmer is the obvious prize but even though he's been bad so far at AA, I don't think the Sox want to give him up.
  2. Be careful not to judge the Davis trade too quickly. We all know how streaky he is and he's raised his OPS from .387 to .486 in his last 2 games. If he goes on one of his 2 week hot streaks, he might be over .800 by Mothers Day.
  3. Segura is still young. Moving might have helped him some, but he could have bounced back here. Stearns obviously liked Villar more, I think in large part because he though Villar might fit at 3B when Arcia arrives and he didn't see Segura there. The way Segura is going, he'd fit just about anywhere. He won't keep this pace up, but the knock on him was "he had 2 good months and that's it". Well now he's had 3 including the most recent. Considering where Segura was this winter, the trade was good, but the one risk in it was that they were selling low. If he keeps hitting, then that will be proven to be true.
  4. Indy's a great sports town, but would the Reds be happy with that? Also, they have a beautiful minor league stadium across the street from Lucas Oil Dome. Is that expandable? Seems a waste for that go unused if they build a new major league venue. Cincy's a relatively small market as it is. Kind of similar to Portland and Seattle. I still think baseball will look at another franchise in NY Metro area. After all, there are 3 NHL teams there. Besides, further dividing the biggest markets does slightly even things out a bit.
  5. Yeah, going to stick with affiliated teams only... OK, but Mexican League is officially a AAA league unlike the Indy leagues.
  6. Montreal, Las Vegas, San Antonio/Austin, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Portland in that order with none being a lock. I wouldn't completely rule out Brooklyn either.
  7. Wasn't Jungmann about 92 with his fastball last year, even in his first start this year? He's down more like 4 mph. Tired or sore or both? Little command either. Alarm bells all over the place.
  8. Flores will be all right. He's best in a 4th OF role. The quandary they have is that if Broxton can't hit major league pitching and early returns are not good, then Nieuwenhuis is the closest to an actual CF they have. Problem is Nieuwenhuis strikes out a ton and while he's got some pop, he's not a guy that will hit enough big flies that you can overlook the strikeouts. I see no reason not to give Reed a shot, that is unless you want to dip into AA for a Taylor, who's at least a true CF and a prospect, though not at the level of Phillips and thus not one to worry about arby clock running. Reed, like Flores and Presley is a corner OF who can play some CF. If it's an evaluation year, take a look at him.
  9. 2 for 4 last night with a couple RBI. I'm sure Davis will be fine. He's adjusting to new league, new surroundings, new teammates. He's always been streaky. When he's hot, he can carry a team.
  10. I don't think Reed could do any worse than anyone else they've had in CF so far. If defense is a concern than Broxton should have been called back up. Would have saved the option on him too. Flores and Presley aren't really CF either. Nieuwenhuis is okay defensively there but his swing has some big holes. The problem is not just CF, but every time Counsell wants to rest Braun it's an issue. The drop off is huge and leaves the lineup very vulnerable. But if they want defense and better offense than Broxton provided, why not jump Taylor up from AA and see what he can do? We know he can't do worse than Broxton.
  11. Nobody can be hitting is worse luck than Aaron Hill. His BABIP is .200, despite a line drive percentage of 36%, nearly double the league average. His last 2 AB's last night could be signs his overall numbers will start reflecting how well he's squaring up the ball but he could have easily had a 4 for 4 night. Took a spectacular back to the infield grab of liner over CF's head the first time up. Next time up, he hit a one bounce rocket right at the SS. A few feet either way and that's a hit.
  12. Track record doesn't look all that good (4.15 Career Minor League ERA, 4.80 in AAA) to me. Had one good year, 2013. Didn't do much before or since.
  13. You are missing Sean Halton, now at Reynosa in the Mexican League.
  14. Reed is already on the 40 man. Bringing up Presley would require they drop someone. I'd rather see Reed or Taylor. Taylor would require a 40 man move too, but he's eventually going to get a spot anyway. Bring up Presley to replace Nieuwenhuis at some point? Absolutely.
  15. The sad part is they could have had 2 very good ones with very little effort. Jhoulys Chacin and Mat Latos were begging for jobs this winter.
  16. Key stat for Peralta, 9 ground ball outs.
  17. Shouldn't that be in blue??? Hey we know he's got the stuff. It's all about command and getting through those first few innings. He avoided the meltdown this time. Hope he can build on it and we see the Wily we know.
  18. Nice job picking up Thornburg both offensively and by Jeffress. That would have been a demoralizing loss, and yes even rebuilding teams need to avoid those. Tough luck for Peralta, but nice to see him keep the ball out of the hitter's happy zone for the most part and get 9 ground ball outs.
  19. He flip-flopped Blazek and Thornburg in the Pirate opener. Thornburg is now the primary setup man.
  20. If we're talking lefty relievers, lets get real fringy and bring up Brad Kuntz. Sure, he's in A Ball and will turn 24 next month, but the guy has 58 K's in 47 professional innings, and a WHIP under 1. He bypassed Appleton and if he keeps this up at Brevard, it won't be long before he's in Biloxi.
  21. You realize Broxton wasn't the only player they got for Rogers, right? He probably wasn't even the main piece in return. And there's only 14 months age difference between Carter and Rogers. And Carter has been at least an average bat the last 4 years. I would've let Rogers start at 1B this season too. Until that deal was offered. That's way more than I thought we'd get and it was a pretty easy deal for us to take. You are referring to a teenage pitcher with a 5.85 ERA in two brief rookie league seasons who if he does ever reach the majors (no better than 50-50 proposition at this point) will be sometime in the next decade as the main piece? By the way, not surprisingly, Rogers is tearing up AAA. Then again, he's hit every where he's been. As for Carter being an "average bat for the last 4 years"? He's 2.4 wins above replacement in 4 seasons. His peak was a 2.0. Houston non-tendered him. I just think it was Stearns coming from Houston and thinking anything Houston had was better than what the Brewers system could possibly have produced. Carter's basically Mark Reynolds II. Ho hum. Jason Rogers is close in age to Carter but he was controllable for basically his entire useful career. Not saying once Rogers was dealt that Carter was a horrible pick up. There wasn't much out there for what they were willing to pay. Just that I liked what I saw of Rogers as a hitter. He did very well pinch hitting in high leverage situations against the better relievers. I like seeing guys who came from late rounds, and defied the scouts and produced and basically forced their way to the big leagues. Then along comes a new glorified scout with little first hand knowledge of Rogers and says he's not impressed.
  22. I'm impressed so far and I was his biggest critic fearing massive strikeout totals. He appears much improved. I hope it continues. Between his adjustment and Gennett on a pace for about 100 walks, who can say they saw this coming? Lineup is still a little short but it's encouraging.
  23. He didn't hit in spring and it carried over into the season. They took a flyer on Broxton because of his obvious athleticism. It cost them a nice looking bat in Rogers. I'd have liked to have seen what Rogers could do with a full season playing 1B, but even in a rebuilding situation, they didn't have interest in giving a late bloomer like Rogers a shot. Carter's done well so far so it might work out, but Broxton figures to be passed up by not one but two better prospects soon. Rogers didn't have anyone breathing down his neck in the system.
  24. It's not about Taylor's stat line though it's been fine so far, it's about the CF situation. They had 9 guys "competing" this spring because in reality, they had nobody who was a major league CF. Taylor's one of two they have in AA that projects to be one and while they'd indeed be rushing him some, he does have over 1,800 professional plate appearances and he makes contact, something the 4 year older Broxton doesn't do. So it's not like he's a player in his 2nd pro year who's striking out a lot against low minor league arms. I'd be fine if they want to try Reed first, and see if he's okay defensively there but Taylor should be considered at some point this season.
