  1. Just scoured the Angels list of arbitration eligibles on MLB traderumors site. One name who's an almost certain non-tender is Gordon Beckham. Beckham's been a major disappointment over his career, but he did manage to hit .293 vs. lefties in 2014, is an excellent defender (he can also play SS and 3B). Might be worth a minor league deal to bring in the platoon with Gennett and be nice utility guy.
  2. Adding him to their coaching staff won't prevent the Rays from hiring him as manager. Would be surprising if Counsell was hired over Martinez. If he is, Maddon will grab Martinez in a heart beat to add to his Cub staff. From what I understand though, the Rays coaching staff including Jim Hickey, their pitching coach are all still under contract so they can't go anywhere unless it's a promotion.
  3. Here's a two pronged idea. Deal Davis and Ramirez (along with about $4 million to even out the dollars) to the A's for Jeff Samardzija and then deal Gallardo to the Yankees for Martin Prado.
  4. Well I watch them on Directv with MLB Extra Innings in Illinois. Can't imagine you'd have an issue. Channel 668-1
  5. Either he qualifies for consideration or he doesn't. Molina still played in 110 games, far more than any other catcher on the Cardinals so that would qualify him in my book. The gap isn't as wide as it used to be but he's still the better catcher. Martin figures in the discussion as well.
  6. Adam Lind games played 2014: 96 2013: 143 2012: 93 2011: 125 And this is on a team with a designated hitter. Faulty comparison. Lind doesn't play against LH pitching. In the AL, not much use for PH either, so when guys don't start, they simply don't play for the most part.
  7. Will Schafer have any options left in 2015?
  8. Bruan had a "procedure". I wouldn't call it surgery. He was swinging a bat just a few days later. It's quite possible he'll need this procedure every few months. They have no idea how long it will continue to provide relief before it wears off.
  9. The direction of this team comes from one man. That guy is Mark Attanasio. Attanasio is a believer in constructing the most competitive team possible on a year to year basis. When Melvin is gone in a year or two, whoever replaces him will have that same directive. This team survives with gate receipts as a huge portion of it's revenue. There's no way MA will authorize a tear down that would result in an extended period of last place finishes that will result in empty seats in Miller Park. If it makes sense to deal Gomez at some point to enhance the teams chances in the relative short term, MA would do it. But he wouldn't authorize dealing him for low level prospects.
  10. Rockies are pretty flush with fairly young, cheap, decent versatile infielders (Rutledge, LeMahieu, Culberson, Ynoa) most of whom are blocked. I'd look to nab one of them. The guy I'd love to get is Josh Rutledge. He's blocked by Tulowitzki. His splits against lefties aren't great but in addition to platooning with Scooter, he could be alternative at SS should Segura struggle again. If not Rutledge, I'd think about trying to acquire LeMahieu, who the Rockies could deal to open up a spot for Rutledge on their infield. Culberson had a bad year, so I imagine he'd come very cheap but if he bounces back to his 2013 form he'd be worth a look. Ynoa has the least experience but he's a switch hitter who showed some promise in a brief trial.
  11. It's a pretty easy call who will be the backup. Jiminez is out of options and the more experienced 3rd baseman. I suspect Rogers will be playing the bulk of his time at 3B in AAA. Green will simply be a AAA utility guy. Even if all those thinking bringing back Ramirez was the right move, think about it. They will be paying $14 million (or $10 more than they would have if they turned down the option) for a guy who they will need to rest 1-2 times a week, and they still won't know if Rogers or Jiminez will be capable of taking over the job in 2016. I dunno, I think a $14 million dollar player should be able to be counted on to produce playing a full schedule barring an injury. Personally, I just think Melvin is coasting and didn't want to work all that hard finding an alternative so he took the path of least resistance. Looking for a 1B seemed to exhaust him last season. I think it will blow up in his and the Brewers' face but history tells us Attanasio will still have his back.
  12. If you think he can return to his peak years of hitting .290 and slugging around .400, he's such a great defender that you could justify playing him virtually everyday. However, guys with Davis' power potential are hard to come by. Davis had 61 extra base hits, was second on the team in doubles and home runs in his first full season. He ran out of gas a bit but that's understandable too. Unless you think Davis reached his ceiling in 2014, I don't know how you can play Parra over him long term.
  13. monty, If they can get Parra on a two year deal for less per year than he gets in arbitration, I'd be fine with bringing him back but I don't want him starting regularly. A good arm in LF isn't that big a priority in my book. Don't get me wrong. Parra brings a lot to the table and is useful. But having a guy who struggles to get an OPS over .700 in a corner OF spot on an everyday or nearly everyday basis as he would in a strict platoon doesn't do it for me, especially with Ramirez' diminished power. If you are thinking semi-platoon in LF, I'd rather have Clark given a shot in that role now that 1B isn't an option for him. Clark clearly brings the power to play there if he can handle major league pitching and if he's adequate in the field. Those are big ifs. but if Parra's still around, there's plenty of insurance if he doesn't.
  14. Would we need to add another starter since Nelson can slide into the 5th spot? Gallardo, Garza, Lohse, Peralta and Nelson would be pretty solid. Not sure you will find anything better without spending $10-14M AAV on the open market. We cannot afford to continue signing FA starters with Braun's second extension starting in 2016 ($20M AAV) and our younger players hitting arbitration (Maldonado, Kintzler, Peralta, Fiers, Davis, Segura, Thornburg and Jeffress). We will also need to find money to extend Lucroy and/or Gomez come 2017. Didn't say I'd sign a starter who would command anywhere near the likes of Lohse or Garza. I'd just bring in a guy who could fill in the 5th spot in case of an injury or if Nelson struggles. There are any number of guys that fit that who come cheap every year. Look at Harang who Braves got for a mere $1 million or Capuano who earned $2.25. That's the type I'm talking about. Scrap heap but reliable guys. Maybe even bring back Narveson from Japan. With Estrada traded and under my scenario Fiers is dealt too, they'd need some insurance.
  15. Konerko was hurt in 2014. I'm talking about 2013 when fell flat. Konerko missed 3 weeks in July of 2013. Prior to that his OPS was .682. He didn't miss any time once he returned on July 22nd. Konerko played for $2.5 million in 2014 as mostly a ceremonial goodbye season bench bat. I'd be fine with Ramirez off the bench for $2.5 million. That's about his worth. Beltran missed about 6 weeks but he wasn't tearing it up when he got hurt either. Regardless, Ramirez is hardly a great physical specimen. He protected his hamstring after getting hurt by running like a 60 year old man. I know, I'm 62. You won't win with guys so conscious of tearing a hamstring that they have to jog.
  16. Beltran went from .830 in 2013 to .701 in 2014. Konerko went from .857 in 2012 to .669 in 2013. Carlos Lee went from .788 in 2011 to .697 in 2012. The point his guys don't fade from prominence. They hit a wall. Hard. I believe Ramirez is going to have a hard time posting an OPS over .700 in 2015. Ramirez' post All Star OPS was .715 last year. That was with a hot August in there. The rest of the time he was awful. He simply cannot drive the ball with any regularity at all. That's not even mention his lack of ability to run at all. From the Brewer perspective, I believe the sole reason they picked up their side was as a message to potential FA in the future that they give guys the benefit of the doubt at the end of careers. I honestly can't believe they actually believe Ramirez is worth the extra $10 million. I hope the Brewers do the right thing and stick Ramirez in the 7th spot in the order. He's not a middle order of the hitter anymore and they've added Lind to the mix. Batting 7th, his base clogging should be less of a factor.
  17. Not true at all. Unless of course we're assuming every player from every team will play exactly the same next year. Which obviously won't happen. Agree. Nothing is static in sports. One criticism I've had of Melvin is that while he can identify a problem and address it reasonably well, he's not inclined to anticipate another problem coming up that wasn't there before. Relying on a soon to be 37 year old Ramirez to be the player he's been even as recently as 2014 could be a huge mistake. Yes Melvin brought in Jiminez but that was insurance if Ramirez turned down the option rather than a move to replace him regardless.
  18. The acquisition of Lind got me thinking that Davis could be expendable. Clark has played some LF, and he may be fully capable of putting up similar numbers to Davis. They'd keep Parra around too who could also start in LF too (justifying his hefty arbitration amount), or be Clark's defensive replacement. No need to keep Ramirez around if they got Donaldson. If he accepts his option, I'd throw him into the deal along with $4-5 million so my offer would be Fiers, Davis and Ramirez for Donaldson and a low level prospect. I'd use the savings from Ramirez to add an extra starter in FA.
  19. Thinking outside the box, I think the Lind trade opens up the possibility of using Khris Davis as centerpiece in a deal for a longer term solution at 3B opening up LF either for Parra or for Matt Clark. Davis would seem to have plenty of trade value and Clark would seem to be capable of putting up similar numbers. If you chose you could use Clark at 1B and Lind in LF.
  20. Sean Halton's still in the organization and had nice splits vs. lefties this past season: .342/.387/.509. I would hope he's in the mix. Rogers should be playing 3B everyday waiting for them to realize Ramirez is done. I wouldn't bring back Reynolds. Like this deal. Before his nice work out of the pen the last month or so, Estrada was almost a certain non-tender. Lind is on par with LaRoche in my book at least vs. RHP for a lot less cash.
  21. $10 million mistake....hoping Ramirez declines but I doubt it. If he's in the lineup in April batting higher than 7th, they are in big trouble.
  22. Bochy is a great manager but Sabean might be an even better GM. He's got a keen eye for talent especially the hard nosed types. Morse was out there for anybody last winter. I always liked Morse. Giants got him for a pittance. Pence remains one of the most underrated players of the past decade. He's durable (hasn't played less than 154 games in any season) and hard nosed. Always liked how he played. Panik was a great use of a late first round pick.
  23. Vitters is bad defensively too.
  24. Ludwick had a similar deal to Ramirez, only his option was $4.5 million which was half what his salary would have been. Still Reds still decided to save the extra $4.5 million they would have had to pay a player with diminishing skills. Ramirez' decline hasn't been quite so obvious numbers wise yet but if you look at his second half, it's there.
  25. Blue Jays picked up Smoak which adds to the speculation that Lind will be moved. MLBTR suggests he could be had for a pitching prospect whose ceiling is as a 4th or 5th starter and who's fairly close to big leagues. I think the Brewers have several guys that fit that description (Jungmann, Cravy). I like the idea of Lind myself because offensively he's as productive as LaRoche is, at least vs RHP, at half roughly half the cost which would leave them with money to spend elsewhere. Now he probably needs a RH platoon partner but finding a decent RH bat to platoon at 1B doesn't seem so daunting and they also have in house candidates.
