  1. Fiers hit the wall in mid August of 2012, not surprising since he had never had a year of more than 125 innings in the minors. But up until then he was arguably their best starter for 2 1/2 months including much of that time when Greinke was still around. He's clearly found his command again. When Fiers has his command, he's a very good major league starter. Problem for him is there is currently no room. If a spot opens up while he's in his current form, I think he has to get first call.
  2. Rosenthal suggested Orioles could be a match. Lombardozzi is no great shakes (2 RBI and 2 Xtra base hits all year). Don't know whether they'd part with Delmon Young but he's a bat that's not all that dissimilar to Weeks offensively and he will agree to play LF. Davis has to be on a short leash despite 2 hits last night.
  3. I don't think there's any dispute that Abreu would have been worth sacrificing Garza.
  4. Why not add another name to the mix, Brad Mills? He'd need a roster spot but he's a lefty and like Fiers and Nelson he's putting up ridiculous AAA numbers.
  5. Cards top line pitching is still very strong, but perhaps not as deep as in past years and who would have guessed their most reliable reliever would be Pat Neshek? Yadi can't help but wear down as the season progresses now that he's in his 30's too. It's not like he's ever been a fitness poster boy.
  6. One of the reasons often cited in rating the Brewer farm system so low is that it lacks so-called "front of the rotation" prospects. While that may be true, there seems to be no shortage of mid to back end rotation candidates and is that such a bad thing? Quality and value at the back end is clearly an advantage in building a roster for a small market team. The "front-end" types are keeping the surgeons very busy. Bradley will get promoted in due time but there is no room in Huntsville now. Besides, he's never had success over a significant stretch so this is beneficial to his confidence regardless of level.
  7. Huntsville staff has a 2.58 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Amazing job and kudos to pitching coach Chris Hook! Hook is building quite a resume for a future as major league PC.
  8. If it took getting Weeks "irked" to get him to hit at a the level he's capable of, then here's to him staying irked.
  9. Looks like Ramirez is headed to DL, so do they still send down Davis when Braun returns? Halton has been heating up if they free up Hellweg's 40 man spot maybe he should be brought back to platoon at 1B allowing full time duty at 3B for Reynolds?
  10. Let's ease up on the hyperbole here. Despite sporadic playing time Weeks is hitting pretty well. Better than Segura and Davis at least. Gennett is atrocious against left handers, and Weeks isn't hurting us by playing second against lefties. Take a look at what's being run out every night by Toronto, St. Louis, or Atlanta, and you'll see Rickie is still capable of being a starter in this league. Not for 11 million dollars, but if the Brewers cut him loose right now he would quickly have another job in the majors. Gennett still needs a platoon mate, and Weeks is a more valuable bench bat than Schafer or Bianchi, so I don't really see what the rush to get rid of him is. You pay his salary either way. There's not really any situation where it makes sense to play Rickie in the outfield either, so I don't see why everyone is so upset about this. So much irrational hatred of Weeks, not just on this board, but among Brewers fans in general. Davis is hitting .217/.239/.388 and was on the verge of a trip to Nashville to get straightened out though A-Ram's injury might have given him a reprieve. Roenicke wants to get both a recently hot Weeks and Gennett in the lineup at the same time. Most guys would do what they have to to get in the lineup and help the team.
  11. Weeks was coddled by the organization as the 2nd pick in the draft. Pete Rose started out at 2nd base and played all over wherever teams needed him. Yount moved off of short because of a shoulder issue and turned into darn fine outfielder. The fact that McCalvy got wind of this doesn't bode well for Weeks. Somebody leaked it for what purpose? It certainly doesn't make him look good. Have to think this isn't the first time.
  12. I think Brewers would be smart to deal Estrada. Not sure his value is all that high though. We've probably seen his ceiling and it's more a solid #4 type and those guys aren't in great demand especially as they are cashing in in arbitration. Any slip and they become non-tender candidates quickly.
  13. I don't see that happening but he should get 3 starts in the next week or so. He'll start vs. CC Saturday, then likely start vs. Liriano on Thursday and Wood on Friday or Saturday in Chicago. He wasn't even a prime PH option until recently so he should be getting a few more opportunities.
  14. Zarraga hit .714 his senior year in high school. That's hard to do in slow pitch softball. In today's game power is more valued but guys that hit and get on base at high rates still are intriguing. Not many 44th rounders from 2007 are still playing.
  15. His AB's have been much better the last couple of weeks no question. But unless Scooter nosedives, it's going to remain a platoon with Scooter getting most of the starts. Weeks' recent good AB's just assures he'll likely be around until at least July. I didn't think he could be productive off the bench, but he's seems to be adapting. Good for him and the Brewers. Too bad he can't play another position.
  16. McCalvy had some interesting things to report on the red hot Shawn Zarraga. He quoted Ash as saying the Brewers always liked his bat, but that his defense was sub par. Ash told him to get in better shape and he lost 20-25 pounds in the offseason and that's helped him defensively and that's what he needed to be considered a prospect. Obviously it hasn't hurt his bat either. All of a sudden the Brewers' catching situation is a strength of the organization. Zarraga and Weisenberger combined have drawn 22 walks, and fanned just 14 times. I wonder if Zarraga could make the move to 3B? His bat is going to play somewhere eventually.
  17. Though I recently defended Davis, it's becoming increasingly clear they need better production in left field. His line of .225/.248./.408 is not only very "Yuni-like", he's doing it at what is supposed to be an offensive position. If the rest of the lineup were hitting, they could ride it out and hope he gets hot. I'd play Gindl out there until Braun returns, and if he looks comfortable, maybe send Davis down and get him straightened out.
  18. Reynolds isn't signed beyond this year so even if he's hitting, Morales still makes sense. Use Reynolds a little more at 3B. I'd also be on the lookout for an OF (LH) if Davis doesn't pick it up and another bullpen arm.
  19. The 81 season as it was constructed was totally bogus. If a team "won" the first half, what incentive did it have to win the 2nd? Besides the first half "winners" were declared after the fact, and thus didn't have any pressure. MLB did what they did to generate interest everywhere. It totally turned me off. Brewers should not have had to beat a team in their own division that they had a better overall record than for the season. Brewers were 62-47. Yankees had only the 4th best record in the East at 59-48. Royals got in the playoffs with a sub .500 record overall at 50-53. They were 10 games under .500 when the strike started, and got a clean slate. Ridiculous. If it were up to me, I'd throw out everything about 1981. No titles were legit. Worst year in baseball in my lifetime. I have many fond memories of the Brewers from that era but none are from 81. The strike and the subsequent make em up as we go postseason was a black mark on the game. Worse than 94 in my opinion.
  20. its only been 3 days... He's eligible to come off for the Pirate series next week. He hasn't played since April 26. It's a legit question whether he'll play any rehab games this weekend.
  21. Roenicke has his Yost moments. Sunday was a perfect example pulling the very sharp Will Smith in a one run game for Brandon Kintzler, who not unlike the KC example, is still not in his groove after a DL stint. Roenicke's rationale? Saving Smith so he could use him in the 7th inning the following night with a 5 run lead. Geesh. Last night was the perfect spot for getting Kintzler back on track, not using arguably your best setup guy.
  22. Jays are contemplating putting Lawrie at 2B and inserting Francisco at 3B. Nobody is interested in Weeks. It's not like the Brewers haven't had his name out there since October. I think the Brewers are getting about what they expected out of him which isn't much but not so awful that he has to go now after just 33 AB's.
  23. I'm not a huge fan of Roenicke's in game decisions. He's not in Ned Yost's class but he's below average and it's not just the bunting obsession. He's a push button guy when it comes to the bullpen, and too often burns through a bullpen so that he's out of relievers by the 11th inning. Of course he's hamstrung with Wang on the roster. Roenicke gets high marks from me for the tone around the team.
  24. It's no slight on Kintzler to use Smith to get through the 8th occasionally.
  25. It wasn't just yesterday. Of his last 10 appearances, 7 have been for less than one full inning. That's the very definition of lefty specialist. Not only that but by doing that with Smith, Roenicke burns through his bullpen faster, leaving himself thin should the games go extra. Lohse was not sharp yesterday. That he managed to get through 6 2/3 innings allowing only 2 runs was a near miracle. There were a lot of very hard hit outs. That's a perfect scenario to bring in a well rested Smith to start the 7th inning and perhaps go 2 innings to get to K-Rod, and save the rest of the pen.
