  1. Roenicke cancelled batting practice two nights in a row...figured why have relievers practice before coming into games?
  2. Oh yes he did........ You may be right but Ned never went out to take out a pitcher when nobody was up in the pen. At least I don't remember that.
  3. Start with Roenicke repeatedly playing for one run and eliminating any chance of a big inning against Harang who had nothing. Then he changes pitchers with nobody in the pen warming up. Then he plays infield in with lead run at 2nd base. I don't believe Yost ever messed one up this bad.
  4. You really don't know what the cost is. The 25th spot normally doesn't belong just to one guy over the course of an entire season (or at least through August). It's an opportunity spot for a player to show he could contribute higher up on the list. If not, someone else gets his turn and so on through the course of the season. Wang's presence is precluding that from happening for other potentially much more competent players.
  5. Pirates just DFA'd Wandy with about $9 million still due on his contract this year. Must be making room for Wang in their rotation when they get him back from the Brewers.
  6. Morris' ceiling is probably about that of a Garrett Jones. You might be able to get by with him for a couple years, but you'd likely need a platoon partner and you'd always be looking for someone better and there's a chance he falls even short of Jones in the majors. My guess is they are waiting on Kendrys Morales. If they don't get him, Morris will likely get his shot. For comparison sake I sort of pegged pre-injury Gamel as comparable to Adam LaRoche.
  7. You guys think the league is going to let them put a healthy pitcher on the DL? They open their training staff up to fines and suspensions if they falsify medical reports. The league will make sure he's actually hurt. Division rivals will see right through it. The DL thing is not going to work.
  8. Well something needs to be done soon. Gallardo may miss his next start. If Thornburg takes it, they are down to 5 major league caliber relievers unless they activate Gorzellany. If they bring up Nelson or Fiers to take it, a roster spot has to be opened also. If they DL Gallardo, he'd miss at least 2 starts. Personally, I don't see even the bottom teams biting on Wang off of waivers. It's one thing to try and sell fans that he's got a terrific future (which is certainly debatable given his experience) if all you have are minimal minor league numbers and good work in spring training. It's quite another when a guy is carrying an ERA of over 17.
  9. He tells some pretty good stories and I think he has a much better rapport with Joe Block than Uecker does. The thing is Uecker works play by play alone. Scully is the only other guy I know that works that way. So whoever is the secondary guy basically does too. Powell and Provus were very adept at it. Block is not. He clearly benefits from a color commentator who knows the inside of the game to converse with. The fans benefit too.
  10. Like him a lot. He adds plenty.
  11. Gomez might be the most misunderstood guy in the game. He's great. One of my all time favorites. Braves broadcast team wasn't effusive in their praise tonight but they gave muted respect. Said he had a "good day". Geesh.
  12. Look out for some backlash reilly because I basically agree with all your points some stronger than others. Bianchi's the better glove than Herrera. Green needs to be up here now. Gindl will do what Davis has done and he'll take walks too. If they have room, maybe bring up Halton to platoon with him. Halton could play 1B too when Reynolds is manning 3B vs. LHP.
  13. Briggs, I'm begging you to learn the rules of the Rule 5 Draft. While it may not change your opinion that Wang will never reach a level above AA, it might facilitate your knowledge of WHY the Brewers are acting as they are, aside from their evaluation of Wang's talent. If Wang clears waivers and is offered back to the Pirates for 25k, they DO NOT have to put him on their 40-man roster if they accept him back. Wang would have no rights and would be back on the Pirates High-A team. Secondly, many players run out of options before they are major league ready. Wang may NEVER become major league ready. It's my opinion that is not a good enough reason to not try and develop him after the Brewers have satisfied the requirements of the Rule 5 Draft. Pardon me for not knowing all the rules of the Rule 5 draft. It doesn't change the fact that he doesn't belong on the Brewer roster. The Brewers have enough major league caliber pitchers to fill out a 12 man staff. In fact they have a few more than that. Wang is taking a spot that others have actually earned. They also have dozens of young guys toiling in the minors to get to that level. They took a shot, hoping he'd be effective enough to at least be comparable to most 12th guys on a staff. He's not. I also don't buy the argument that he's not causing issues because he's been accepted in the clubhouse. I'm sure that's true for those who are not affected by his being there, but I have to think a Rob Wooten who worked his butt off for years to get to the big leagues isn't too thrilled about Wang's presence.
  14. Texas is slowly fading with injuries to their pitching staff. They figure to look to sell off some pieces. Alex Rios is a guy who should be available. Rios would be an overall offensive upgrade over Davis. He would come with some risk as he was known to dog it at times with White Sox, and he's not cheap ($12.5 million this year of course prorated for whatever portion he'd be here). But the salary should mitigate what you'd have to give up in return. He also has an option for 2015 for $13.5 and the Brewers could consider it to replace departing Ramirez.
  15. Great post you need to keep this kid here and it gives them a promising Lefty for the Future and think Wang has not lost as many games as the Hitter have recently. I don't think the Pittsburgh brass is losing any sleep whatsover over loss of Wang. He was never at a stage where he was anything more than one piece of their low level pitching inventory. Those inventory levels rise and fall all the time. One arm doesn't make a ripple unless it's a Kershaw or a Sale type talent which Wang is not. I don't even think it's a slam dunk that Pirates take him back. Remember they'd have to put him on their 40 man and start his options clock which they weren't willing to do last winter. He's likely going to run out of options before he's major league ready.
  16. Thornburg extended last night and looked fine. He just may be better off starting so he can use all his pitches. Not that he can't relieve effectively, but I think his real future is starting. His issues may just have been his arm not recovering quickly enough for heavy bullpen work.
  17. "Wang...he's never thrown higher than A ball" That's incorrect. He'd never been higher than rookie ball. A ball is a considerable step up from rookie ball. Rookie ball isn't even on the level of the top college leagues, Pac-12, Big 12 or SEC, or ACC. SRB nailed it about Melvin. A major reason Brewers always seem to struggle in May is that Melvin is slow to make personnel changes. All over baseball guys are being shuffled, DFA'd etc, but the Brewers stand pat based on April results. They've got options too.
  18. Just for the record, Wang turned 22 on April 25.
  19. Short of mishandling the Lucroys' luggage or standing too close to Ryan Braun when he's getting in his pre-AB swing routine, how exactly is he going to get a twinge? Would a self respecting team doc even agree to an MRI in hopes of finding a minute rotator cuff or labrum tear when there are no symptoms?
  20. I think the majority of us who want to keep him view him as a future SP, not a LOOGY. Wang faces long, long odds. He's so far away and has accomplished so little up to now. The great ones like Kershaw and Sale, were already getting major league hitters out at the same age Wang is now. So was Gallardo. Peralta was at AA and fast tracking toward Milwaukee. This is a lost year for Wang and will no doubt set him back.
  21. Coulter having quite a game in the opener, 3 for 3, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, gunned down two runners trying to steal and picked a guy off first. Sort of Maldonado's game last night in reverse!
  22. I'm just guessing but the "save face" move is to make a deal with Pirates, and the silence today has me thinking that may be happening. Pittsburgh's probably asking for an A level pitcher.
  23. I posted on here before last season was over that the two guys they should pursue were Morneau (.327/.355/.585 with Rockies) or Morse (.277/.329/.534 with Giants). Morse signed for a modest $6 million one year deal. Morneau signed for two years $12.5 million. Talk about bargains! Before someone screams Coors Field, Morneau's road splits are .300/.321/.538. Now I don't recall much outcry when Melvin passed them over but I was puzzled. Why?? I realize neither were coming off great seasons, but I just couldn't get those times out of my head when these guys faced Brewer pitchers with game on the line. They were and still are two of the most feared hitters in the game, and they were on sale at bargain basement rates. Opportunities lost.
  24. Yeah it's definitely worth sacrificing games in 2014 for the next Zach Braddock though even Braddock had success above rookie ball. This kid hasn't. Funny, I don't remember Braddock or Parra being anything special in the major leagues either. Brewers got more out of Narveson and Stetter. Now they have several lefties in their system, Bradley, Suter, and Hobbs Johnson all performing well in the minors and perhaps the best lefty they've had since a healthy Nieves or Plesac in their pen now in Will Smith.
  25. He bought himself another series with 2 for 4 and a HR last night. They should go more to a platoon though. Numbers don't reflect it but Schafer has had some decent AB's lately including a double off a lefty on Sunday breaking up a no hitter.
