  1. Will Smith was a great addition to this staff. But he didn't come cheap. Melvin spent a solid everyday leadoff hitter to get him I'm sure in part because his stuff is good enough to get out both lefty and righty hitters and the fact that he showed in KC the ability to go multiple innings. So down the road, a starting role seemed likely. So why does our esteemed manager seem intent on limiting him to a lefty specialist role? Teams do not give up starting OF for lefty specialists do they?
  2. Another reason it wouldn't be such a tragedy if they lost Wang. Hobbs Johnson and Anthony Banda are two more lefty starters worth following. Banda is only 20 and handling full season ball so far.
  3. Pitchers bunt all the time and are usually the best sacrifice bunters on the team. If he wanted a bunt there, then let Duke bat as Votto was due up the next inning. You can't simulate bunting in batting practice. Everyone seems to forget that Segura's pop up to short right wouldn't have scored Davis anyway. The game is different than when Roenicke was a player. Getting a run in from 3rd via a flyball against the dominant high strike out relievers of today is much harder than it was in the 80's when usually only the closer had that kind of stuff. Bianchi should have been up there swinging away trying to hit it on the ground to the right side. Doing that, there's a chance he finds a hole too. But by far as DHonks points out the managerial mistake that cost them the game was taking Smith out.
  4. You are absolutely correct. They didn't acquire Smith to be a LOOGY did they? Melvin needs to have a sit down with Roenicke. Smith is supposed to be a potential starter that can go multiple innings. But Roenicke has fallen into push button managing. Not only was Smith in total command, but Kintzler isn't far removed from the DL and hasn't been real sharp since he returned. On the bunting issue, in today's game where strikeouts are so common, it's a lot harder to get a guy in from third with 1 out. It's also harder to bunt hard throwing relievers. Now LeCune isn't a hard thrower, but that's a guy a hitter with bat control should be able to hit a ground ball to the right side off of. This loss is on Roenicke. It was a "Ned Yost" moment.
  5. Stashing isn't all that new. Back before there was an MLB draft, there was a "bonus baby" rule, designed to discourage teams from getting in bidding wars for amateur talent. It worked something like this. If a player received a bonus in excess of a certain amount, he had to be carried on the 25 man roster for two seasons. The Braves back in the day had bonus babies Joey Jay and Bob "Hawk" Taylor. Jay was in the big leagues at 17 but hardly ever pitched for 2 years. Of course in those days starters finished games. Taylor likewise was stashed as an 18-19 year old in 57 and 58, and only appeared a handful of times. Jay went on to a fine career. Taylor never reached his potential.
  6. Really I don't care who gets Wang but he doesn't belong on a contending team and if he goes back to the Pirates that's fine because I don't expect him to be haunting the Brewers anytime soon if ever. He'll probably run out of options before he's ready to pitch in the big leagues anyway in which case the Brewers can take another crack at him. The Brewers tried young Rule 5 guys before. Remember Matt Ford and Enrique Cruz? Neither did anything in the big leagues after that and compared to Wang, they were grizzled vets.
  7. Weeks has had better AB's the last 10 days. As much as I've advocated releasing him due to limited production and lack of versatility off the bench, as long as he's making some contribution I'm okay with him sticking around (alternatives are limited at this point) at least until Memorial Day and reassessing then. It would be nice if he drove in a run once in a while but the opportunities haven't been all that frequent.
  8. I posted when Herrera was signed that he was a jack of all trades but master of none. He's still handier to have around than Weeks. Bianchi is a plus defender all over the infield.
  9. I'm fine with Reynolds in RF. I would have used him there instead of Herrera anyway (until A-Ram got hurt). Without Braun they need Reynolds' pop in the lineup. I have to assume A-Ram and Segura are starting leaving a bench of Weeks, Bianchi, and Maldanado. Eh, Weeks gets a reprieve. He's had some better AB's the last 10 days. When Schafer returns, either Braun goes on DL or one of Weeks or Wang is gone. I suppose Wooten could be sent back, but really after 2 games their bullpen issues are solved?
  10. Herrera's versatility and the fact he's a switch hitter makes him more valuable than Weeks. In Weeks defense he's been making better contact of late. Still I don't think we are going to suddenly see a power surge from him playing about once a week. If the plan is to put Braun on the DL to make room for Schafer on Saturday, then why not just do it now and send down Herrera a couple days from now? What about Garza? Will he make his next start or will they recall Fiers?
  11. I'm not an expert though I play one on here. Nothing that he's done so far would give Ramirez the edge, and they are separated by less than a year in age. If Morris shows he has clearly reached his ceiling, and Ramirez shows improvement, that would change. Odds are sometime this season Morris is going to make his major league debut. He's going to have to impress fairly quickly and put up solid AAA numbers just to hold his 40 man spot.
  12. How much value do you think Fiers has at this point? If the offer is Fiers for Dunn, the White Sox are the ones saying no, not the Brewers. White Sox would make that deal in a heartbeat. Dunn is untradeable. It's that simple. Yeah Dunn had a good April, but no White Sox fan I know trusts him and I know a lot of them including my brother. Freeing Dunn's contract would open up opportunities for them to get help elsewhere. Fiers is a far superior option to the guys they have used in the back end of their rotation. They'd a have a bit of a hole at DH but they could fill that with Konerko or Keppinger who's currently on the DL or could sign Morales themselves. I have no idea what the Brewers would do with Dunn. Reynolds provides virtually the same bat and better defense.
  13. Wang is a prospect and it would be nice if he were toiling at Appleton right now. But he can't get major league hitters out and he needs plenty of seasoning in the minor leagues, and so the experiment should end. The Brewers took a flier that he could be someone special. I get that. But he's clearly not and in the role he's in, its doing more damage to his future than anything else. If he survived this year on the roster, I think you'd have a kid who'd need longer development time to overcome the scars from this lost season in his development.
  14. "Impact talent"?? Guys like Kershaw and Sale are impact talents. They were already dominating big league hitters at the age Wang is now. Wang is years from even being serviceable at the major league level if, and it's a pretty significant if, he ever gets there. Brewer talent evaluators are high on him but they were high enough on Jed Bradley to pick him in the middle of the first round and how's that working out? I also don't buy the notion that Pittsburgh wouldn't be open to a trade. Who's to say the Pirates are anywhere near as high on Wang as the Brewers or that they wouldn't prefer another player that fits their needs better?
  15. Clint Coulter is showing signs of being that impact bat. The system is flush with athletic OF types: Taylor, Reed, Richardson, who may not be potential stars but who could soften the blow if they lose Gomez to FA in 2017. There's a few other guys sprinkled throughout that could rise too. There's enough depth in pitching to deal from.
  16. Also feels good to write that Shawn Zarraga has an even higher OPS in the Southern League (1.117). I don't know if these guys can catch, but they can hit and as the old saying goes "the bat plays". Zarraga is a switch hitter who plays almost exclusively vs. RHP who he is mauling to the tune of .512/.566/.581. Those are good numbers if he was facing high schoolers.
  17. Imagine the thought process for Fiers when he sees what happened in St. Louis today.
  18. Look Mike Fiers just dominated today again at AAA. He deserves to be in Milwaukee earning a major league paycheck. His former teammates on the Brewers know this as well and I'm sure it doesn't sit well with them if they were honest about it. Had Fiers been around to relieve Garza today, they might come back and won that game. Wang is a prospect. He's not the 2nd coming of Clayton Kershaw or Chris Sale however. He's a guy who has a chance to be a major league pitcher 3-4 years from now. There's also a significant chance he never makes it. To maneuver a pitching staff so you can hang on to one prospect who's that far away from the majors doesn't make sense.
  19. Wang's a nice A ball arm. Period. He isn't worth wasting a 25 man slot for a contending team on the chance he's got anything more than a token big league career 4 years down the road. Current management will likely be long gone by then anyway.
  20. Hard to be too harsh on a guy who's gotten key extra base hits in 3 extra inning wins in the first month of the season. Right now teams are attacking him in the zone. What's he supposed to do, take pitches and get behind 0-2 every AB? Eventually he'll earn some respect, but I'd leave him alone.
  21. Between Donald Sterling, the NFL draft, the NBA, NHL playoffs, and English Premier League soccer ESPN's baseball coverage outside of Baseball Tonight is limited to the Yankees and Red Sox. Maybe if Andy North starts showing up at games, the Brewers could get some coverage on the Golf Channel.
  22. Well Braun was in the on deck circle last night and they said they could have used him. I'd hate to have him sit on the DL for a week when he's healthy enough to play. Segura is said to be close to returning too and was even going to take BP tonight. If that's the case, he could PH. I wouldn't expect to see either in the field. but one AB?
  23. I'd piggy back Will Smith and Thornburg. Just go straight to the pen!
  24. Overbay has been fine so far. I wouldn't trust him to produce if he had to play everyday but he's done the job he's been asked no question.
  25. The Brewers may lack in top 100 prospects but they have a number of pitchers putting up good numbers in their system. If that keeps up, I would think they could rent a guy like Hart. I mean if he felt slighted by their offer, trading for him would be a pretty decent gesture and I'm sure he'd be welcomed back.
