  1. Make that two! Great to have Yuni back on board! I'll take him over Donnie Murphy any day.
  2. This team led the NL in runs scored last year, and I think it will be better with a full season of Aoki leading off and hopefully a more productive Weeks and a healthy Lucroy. The bullpen won't be great but I don't see the incessant string of gut wrenching losses that plagued them last year. Manny Parra is gone, and the last Brewer team that didn't have Parra, won 96 games. Jean Segura is an exiting young player. Carlos Gomez is one of the most exciting players in the game. I could go on and on about positives to be excited about.
  3. I dunno. He looked the same size as Garth Iorg standing at first, and Iorg is also listed at 5'11". I think Shaw's a guy to keep an eye on to see how he does at Huntsville. A lefty bat, some on base skills and ability to play SS and 2B fairly well might mean some hope for a career as utility guy.
  4. I'm going to nominate another name on the whipping boy list: Alex Gonzalez. He was a popular guy last year more so for the guy he was replacing and his plus defense at SS than his bat though. His offensive deficiencies though will not play well as a middle of the lineup hitter playing out of position at 1B. Of course it's Roenicke's "brilliant" idea to play him there and the venom will be directed to Gonzalez as a message to the manager more than personal toward Alex.
  5. What do Jeff Suppan, Braden Looper and Kyle Lohse all have in common other than who they have played for? They all had their best seasons when Yadier Molina was their primary catcher. Forget Dave Duncan, Tony LaRussa, Busch Stadium, the uniforms, etc. I watched Burgos in the WBC, and after seeing him pitch to Molina, I'm convinced he'd be a 15 game winner on the Brewers right now with Yadier catching him. The guy (Molina) just knows how to handle a pitching staff and the guys throwing to him exude confidence. All due respect to Lucroy who's a fine player, but he's not in that class defensively.
  6. To be honest, it's a little premature to consider Maldonado a better offensive player than Lalli based on 258 major league AB's. Lalli's older but he's been a better minor league hitter than Maldonado. He obviously doesn't have the upside but for the here and now, he might be as good or better.
  7. The argument over guys like Peralta, Fiers, etc makes my point that I've been saying all along in that they don't really know what they have in those two and I'll throw in guys like Burgos and Thornburg too. The opportunity was right before them to test these guys right out of the gate in games that count. If one or two faltered badly, just replace them with Burgos and Thornburg. The offense was good enough to carry them in August and September last year and the bullpen should be improved. Narveson, who's 31 is a veteran presence. Estrada too, at 29 has been around. They aren't kids. Instead, they gave in to outside pressures (so-called expert prognosticators), and put too much on spring numbers in Arizona. My goodness, Fiers wasn't sharp early last year either before he got called up in May. But they made a huge deal out of some rough outings this spring that mean nothing. Carlos Villanueva touched on it when talking about wanting to be a starter all along. He said teams (re:Brewers) never let him ride out a rough patch as a starter. That's exactly what's happening know. Melvin has shown in the past that if he traded for you (Capuano) or signed you as a FA, his patience is limitless, but if you sort of forced your way up the ladder with your performance, and didn't wow scouts along the way, he'd stick with you until you had a couple rocky starts, then he'd look to dump you or at least move you to the pen.
  8. Narveson has been in the 4th spot and Fiers in the 5th spot in the spring order. Lohse has to be stretched out so I assume Fiers will piggyback his starts initially as the 13th guy on the staff. Then depending on how Fiers and Peralta pitch, one will be sent down when Lohse is stretched out and they go back to a 12 man staff. Lohse is number 2 on paper, but I don't see how that plays out in their order initially.
  9. This is 100% results oriented thinking though. They have gone to the playoffs twice and both times they had legit world series contending rosters late in the season. It is really hard to sell me on that being a failure. Well you were consistent Ennder but the Brewers weren't. They passed on arm after arm and told Marcum to literally take a hike.. I saw what Oakland did last year with a lot less experience going in than the Brewers have this year and figured they could add the needed arm in season. But needing another arm from the beginning was certainly a view that could be backed up as well but it shouldn't have had anything to do with spring training results. Injury, yes. Results in the desert in March, no. I suppose the inaction did drive the price down some if that was their intent.
  10. Ennder, I just don't like the Brewers doing a 180 from their offseason strategy based on a handful of innings in Arizona. We all know that pitching in Arizona isn't at all indicative of what a guy will do in season. It's almost as if Attanasio got his ESPN the magazine in the mail and panicked when he saw his team picked 4th. They wouldn't give Dempster a 3rd year but they'd give one to Lohse? How does that make sense? Have a plan and stick to it. The great franchises do that but not the Brewers who continue to spend on mediocrity. Melvin should have stood his ground. What is Attanasio doing even talking to Boras anyway?
  11. Names of guys they passed on who signed with new teams for less money/years (and no draft picks) than Lohse and are now in rotations: Joe Blanton, Angels 2yr/$15 million Kevin Correia, Twins, 2yr/$10 million Scott Feldman, Cubs 1yr/$6 million Jeremy Guthrie, Royals 3yr/$25 million Shawn Marcum, Mets 1yr/$4 million Brandon McCarthy, D-backs, 2yr/$15.5 million Mike Pelfrey, Twins, 1yr/$4 million Joe Saunders, Mariners, 1yr/$6.5 million Carlos Villanueva, Cubs, 2yr/$10 million It's going to be very interesting to see how Lohse does compared to this "value" group as well as the Ryan Dempsters and Edwin Jacksons. I'm disappointed overall in the deal but especially the 3rd year. It's as if their draft strategy of the past 3 years was just thrown out the window.
  12. The budget angle is precisely why I said "almost" Sounds good in theory but how likely is that to really happen? People literally said the exact same thing about Suppan & Wolf. They actually could have likely moved Wolf after 2011 had they eaten some of his salary, but we all know it's not been Melvin's nature to move guys that he's given large contracts to, be they home grown or FA. My guess is Lohse will be here for the duration. What is more interesting is what they will do with Estrada and Narveson if both of those guys have strong years. Lohse just ate up money that could have gone to them.
  13. The common denominator in St. Louis is Molina. Has been going back even to Suppan's success there.
  14. This. Lohse with the Cardinals: 809 IP 3.90 ERA 1.279 WHIP 9.3 H/9 2.2 BB/9 5.6 K/9 101 ERA+ Lohse the rest of his career: 1162 IP 4.82 ERA 1.432 WHIP 10.1 H/9 2.8 BB/9 5.7K/9 95 ERA+ Almost a run less of ERA, a .153 drop in WHIP, and almost 1 less hit per inning with the Cardinals while K and BB rates stay about the same. Lohse is a product of playing in St. Louis. He is a disaster waiting to happen. I'll give you this, Lohse was really helped by playing in St. Louis, however I think it has more to do with that they taught him that killer sinker he has, so he can rely on that instead of his average fastball. Eh, I think Yadier Molina deserves most of the credit. He helped make Hiram Burgos a household name in Puerto Rico.
  15. Seconded I call for a unanimous proclamation. We've finally got a guy we all can agree on.
  16. But again Lohse is a better pitcher than either of these guys were when we signed them. You are also fooling yourself if you think Wolf didn't work out. I hate that we signed a 34 year old to 3 years, I hate giving up a pick. I don't disagree with those points at all. But at least be honest about the past. I don't understand how you can say that. Randy Wolf was coming off a year very similar to Lohse's 2012, 214 IP vs. 211 for Lohse, 3.23 ERA for Wolf to 2.86 for Lohse, 1.101 WHIP for Wolf to 1.091 for Lohse. Wolf was 33. Lohse is 34. They are both finesse pitchers. As for Suppan, at ages 28-30, Suppan was the number 1 most similar pitcher to Lohse according to baseball reference.
  17. Good thing he's not pitching against us anymore, a top notch offense over the last several years. Those stats mean nothing. Yeah they do Rob. His only good seasons were pitching in St. Louis. When he was with teams playing in hitter's parks, the Twins in the Metrodome, and the Reds in GAB, he wasn't very good.
  18. For how long? It's more likely now at the end of 15 days, he'll get taken off the 40 man to make room for Lohse. Odd are he'll clear though.
  19. Sounds good in theory but how likely is that to really happen? He'd actually have to be pitching well to have trade value with that contract (unlikely). In the off chance he is, they'd likely be in it if he is. I'm afraid we're stuck with him and guys like Burgos, Thornburg, Jungmann, are all going to be pushed deeper. Have to think now Rogers will be waived for the 40 man spot. I suppose they'll hang on to him if he clears.
  20. Lohse's career numbers in Miller Park (If you are faint hearted stop reading now): 44 IP, 56 Hits, 34 Runs all earned, 7 HR, 15 BB. 25 K, 6.95 ERA, 1.614 Whip, .890 OPS against.
  21. It still is. Lohse hasn't been better than #4 starter the majority of his career. Dumb move. It stinks. They finally unload the last of the bad contracts last August and now our owner gets conned by the same guy who wouldn't counter the Fielder offer. What's irritating is the guys they passed on this off season who would have come a lot cheaper like a Brandon McCarthy. There should be a rule. Owners should not be allowed to watch any spring games in Arizona. More mistakes are made based on actually giving credence for numbers put up there.
  22. "the final bullpen spot could go to a pitcher the brewers have already optioned" Among those the likely candidates are Jesus Sanchez, Stinson, and Burgos. With Rogers on the DL, Stinson or Burgos could fill the long role.
  23. Yuni hit .447/.451/.574 in 47 AB's this spring. Somebody will pick him up.
  24. The "known to be interested" refers to an article early in spring that mentioned the Brewers had a scout to see Harang pitch. Melvin immediately debunked it saying the scout was at the game basically on his own time. MLBtraderumors never reported that. All 3 of these guys have been simply putrid this spring. Combined they've worked 35 innings, allowed 53 hits, and 31 earned runs. Now Arizona stats are misleading but seriously do the Dodgers think any team would give them something of value for these guys, considering the contracts and the possibility the Dodgers could be forced to cut anyone of them in the next few days?
  25. And your silly Garland fetish rears its ugly head again. This guy is beyond awful at this point. Once every 6 years or so he gets a lucky BABIP and posts above average ERA but almost his entire career has just been a study in futility. He is a poor man's Suppan and at this point in his career we really don't want a poor man's 34 year old Suppan. Not sure why our rotation is suddenly in trouble either. Nothing has changed about the rotation based on some exhibition games in spring. I tend to agree with your last statement and I've always looked at Garland as a solid starting pitcher. He's now a back end guy clearly but now he's also cheap. He's had a solid spring. I'm not advocating signing him now, but it's a consideration if anyone in the current group falters and they want a veteran.
