  1. If putting up numbers in AAA meant instant success at the major league level, rumors would be rampant about teams wanting to pick up 35 year old Cody Ransom, who can play 3B and SS and currently has a 1.055 OPS for Reno and guys like Lyle Mouton would have been major league All Stars. Green's played just 85 games at AAA, and has never played in the majors. The thought that "he has nothing to prove at AAA" is wishful thinking for a guy who was slowed by injuries the previous two seasons. He needs to prove he can put up numbers over a full season at AAA. I'm sure the Brewers are well aware of Green and that Melvin has poured over reports from his scouts and Don Money, who knows a thing or two about playing 3B. But it's obvious they don't think it's smart to stick him in the middle of a heated pennant race.

  12. He bats in the order ahead of Braun and Fielder. Nobody is going to walk much in that spot. His aggressiveness is a good thing there and it's working.
  13. Don't overlook Don Newcombe, the old Dodger. Newcombe hit .271/.338/.367. He "only" had 15 HR total but he had arguable the greatest offensive year by any pitcher not named Ruth in 1955. In 1955, Newcombe hit .359/.395/.632, with 7 HR 23 RBI in 117 AB's. That year he also went 20-5 with a 3.20 ERA yet incredibly only finished 7th in the MVP voting. Zambrano's a good hitter, but he's not in Newcombe's class as evidenced by the .089 difference in OBP. It's also worth noting that starters got a lot more AB's back in the days of complete games. My top 3 are: Ruth, Ferrell, Newcombe Another guy nobody's mentioned is Gary Peters. His numbers were .222/.253/.348, with 19 HR and 109 RBI, playing in spacious old Comiskey. He was often used as a pinch hitter. An interesting note on Catfish Hunter. When he pitched his perfect game in 1968 against the Twins, he was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and drove in 3 of the A's 4 runs in the game.
  14. Perhaps the most interesting stat for any Brewer prospect this year is the K rate for Richardson. Last year, he struck out once ever 3.6 AB's. This season, at a level higher, his K rate has improved dramatically to once every 5.8 AB's. That certainly accounts for the increased BA. Predictably his walks are down, because no doubt his walk total last year got boosted by more swings and misses. Dramatic improvement in making contact from one season to the next bodes well for his future.
  15. The Brewers clearly are underachieving. They should be a 90-92 win team. As someone that followed the late 70's early 80's team, it really bothers me that this team, unlike those, doesn't bring it every night. They appear to play only when the spirit moves them or when they feel 100%. Other than Morgan who's out there leaving it all on the field, the rest seem content just to be in the race, and not to dominate it. This pitching staff could use a Mike Caldwell in the worst way. But that doesn't mean you sell now. There are over 60 games left. Hopefully, they'll start playing with a greater sense of urgency sooner rather than later.
  16. Swisher was never even on the table for the Brewers only the Brewers taking on all of Cameron's salary and taking junk back AKA Melky Cabrera. Cameron for Melky Cabrera would have been a great deal long term. Cabrera's still only 26, and he's hitting .295/.333/453. He's on pace for about 18 HR, 80 RBI, and 40 doubles. Cameron is on the verge of being released by his second team this year.
  17. Hmmm. The biggest "fish" is Hanley Ramirez. He is having a very mediocre season and we all know the Marlins are cash strapped and his salary goes up to $15 million next year. I presume you mean Reyes, but it got me to thinking.
  18. I don't think Narveson is well suited to the situational role. I just don't see Jackson as a huge upgrade. His WHIP this year is 1.427, roughly the equivalent of Narveson's 1.449. The other ratios are all pretty similar too. K/9, Narveson is 7.8, Jackson is 7.3 for instance. Jackson has 8 "quality starts". Narveson has 10. When on, he is very tough, but he lacks consistency. The starters the Brewers have just need to pitch up to their capability. That's more the problem than anything else.
  19. Nice to see Halton with his 2nd dinger in 3 days. He's proven he can hit. At 6'5", 265, it's just got to be a question of getting a little elevation.
  20. Invader3K, while you've been over the top in your Betancourt criticism, I completely agree with you that Carroll is the guy who'd be the best fit on this team.
  21. I've had my eye on Betemit for a long time, since back in his Brave days. He was once as high as the 8th best prospect in baseball in 2002. Here's what I know: A. He is a good hitter. From 2005 to 2007, his average OPS was .792. Last year it was .889. It's fallen off this year a bit to .750, which is still a lot better than McGehee. B. Never a great defender, he got way too big to play SS. He's adequate at 3B. He's no more a SS now than Almonte was. C. His career low point came with the White Sox in 2009. He's rebounded very well since then. I've only seen him a few times, but he's in a little better shape now. Frankly the Brewers can't risk putting a raw rookie like Green in an everyday role in the middle of a race. If they were out of it, sure, but the jump from AAA is a huge one. Green's time will come probably in 2012. I had suggested Betemit and Greg Dobbs as guys that make perfect sense right now. They are solid, veteran players. Betemit has postseason experience too.
  22. I get this about Betancourt. He's frustratingly impatient at the plate. As a result he almost never walks and far too often puts "pitcher's pitches" in play. There is nothing wrong with his swing, but when you are swinging at pitcher's pitches, it's going to look worse than it is. Defensively, his range is definitely below average but not that noticeable unless you are predisposed to think that it is. But where are you getting "he makes routine grounders an adventure"? He's got 226 assists, and 10 errors. Fielding percentage isn't the total picture of defense but it sure is as regards to "routine grounders". His fielding percentage is .970. The league average for the position is .971. Robin Yount's career average was .964. Josh Wilson's is .955 and that ball Wilson booted in the 9th yesterday is one Betancourt makes in his sleep. I know you don't like the guy, but at least be fair in your analysis. That's my whole problem with this Betancourt stuff. The criticism of this guy is completely over the top. I'm not a huge fan of him as a player, but I do recognize unfair criticism and this guy has gotten plenty.
  23. Part of the reason the Brewer starter numbers look bad are that with the possible exception of Narveson, Roenicke gives them all a very long leash. That's understandable because guys like Gallardo, Greinke and Marcum on paper are workhorses that eat innings. The starter numbers would look a lot better if Roenicke had a quicker hook.
  24. Ever since the day he was acquired there's been one thread after another devoted to bashing Betancourt, Can't you guys just put it to rest? You got your wish, Josh Wilson is in there now. Of course, playing everyday, he'll be exposed too.
  25. Why is Counsell still on the team? He's 0 for the summer. With problems in the lineup 3rd and SS, having a washed up backup like Counsell only compounds the problem.
