  1. To add a little insult to injury, Carlos Villanueva threw 6 shutout innings last night lowering his ERA to 2.99. Carlos has a 1.08 WHIP, a .218 BAA, a .316 Slugging percentage against, and is making $1.42 million this year. Plus he's putting up those numbers in the AL. Oh yeah, and the Brewers got nothing in players back for him. For the $13.5 million, and 4 players, the Brewers are getting a lot less from Greinke than the Blue Jays are getting from Villanueva.
  2. We are obviously either not watching the same guy (Betancourt), or you haven't seen too many shortstops. I can name two in the same division who are worse defensively just this year than Betancourt, one of whom is an All Star (Starlin Castro). The other is Ryan Theriot.
  3. Escobar since June 1st is hitting .314/.349/.449. In his last 24 games he's hitting .360/.415/.547. It's taken him a little while, but he's going to be a better than average offensive SS when all is said and done and he may well be right now. The Brewers were absolutely right in choosing him over Hardy. Unfortunately, they gave him up for a pitcher with an ERA over 5. Now that was the big mistake.
  4. Let's say Brewers are reluctant to turn over 3B to a raw rookie like Green in the middle of a pennant race and they don't trust Gamel defensively. Who's available to bail them out at that position? It would seem logical that the Marlins would listen to offers for Greg Dobbs, who not only would make a fine platoon for 3B, but can also play the OF.
  5. It's not just Loe facing lefties. He's bad against righties too when he gets the ball up. The thing is you can tell whether Loe has his good stuff or not from the first batter he faces. If the ball is up, any professional hitter, much less a major leaguer will hit it hard somewhere. It's an 89 mph cookie. Guys in indy leagues don't get away with that. Loe gets movement only when the ball is down. He's shown he either has it out of the bullpen or doesn't. Leaving him in there hoping he finds it is stupid. Roenicke is so much like Yost it's scary. What's also scary is that Yost lost his job eventually not so much for his poor strategy decisions, but because he started being defensive and testy when questioned about them.
  6. Everything Melvin does is reactionary. Starting pitching goes down one year, and the next year the need becomes staring pitching depth and he brings in a bunch of 4th and 5th starters.. Young relief pitching fails one year and the next they bring in a bunch of guys in the mid 30's. Melvin never anticipates anything. He assumes what wasn't broken one year will stay not broken the next. He's constantly focusing on fixing last years problem instead of anticipating what this year's will be and preventing it.
  7. I figured it out. Ron Roenicke is Ned Yost. That should surprise nobody. They were hired by the same guy who obviously used the same criteria for hiring both guys. Both were marginal major league players. Both were understudies to successful managers. Neither has a clue on how to handle a pitching staff, or manage a bench. The Brewers were Yosted in the last two games. Since Roenickeied is a little too wordy, can we just reprise the Yosted term in regards to his twin, Ron Roenicke?
  8. The bench has nothing to do with the team faltering over the past week. The starting pitching has failed. The bullpen has failed. The defense has failed. The manager has failed. Weeks is 4 for his last 33. Fielder has 1 RBI in the last 7 games. Why on earth pick now to dis the bench? Kotsay on the other hand has started 3 games in the last week, He's 5 for 12 with a HR and 3 RBI. We have to get away from making the bench or Betancourt the scapegoat every time this team struggles. Good benches don't win squat. You win because your starters are better than the other guys and they manage to stay relatively healthy and productive. When the guys you count on to produce, don't, you won't win. Bench players are bench players because they are not good enough start. Expecting them to play up to a starter's standard is plain silly.
  9. No. His failures seem more to do with lapses in concentration. That's on the pitcher, not the coaches.
  10. Geremi Gonzales (Rest in Peace) was a long reliever who at one time was a promising starter for the Cubs in the late 90's. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 33. To be fair, the Brewers waited on Adams who had injury/effectiveness issues in 2005 after a solid, but not spectacular 2004. Adams posted a 5.75 ERA in AAA in 05, and started 06 off badly for the Brewers. That they got anything for him at the time was remarkable. He missed all of 07 and didn't resurface until 2008. I hardly think Melvin deserves blame on that one.
  11. What games are you guys blaming everything on Betancourt and Kotsay watching? "Massive holes in the spots Melvin messed with"?? Like CF where he picked up Nyjer Morgan for essentially a bag of balls? Betancourt's hitting .284 since June 1. Sure he'll drive you nuts some times with his approach at the plate, but he's not kicking balls all over in the field, and he figures to still get his share of hits. Kotsay's no worse than what most teams have as extra outfielders. Scour other rosters and see for yourself. The guys killing this team are Greinke, McGehee and Loe and the manager. Greinke's pitching like Manny Parra without the walks. McGehee looks lost. Loe can be dominant but when he's not, he's putrid. Roenicke is slow to recognize when his pitcher just doesn't have it. It's obvious with Loe from his first batter. Another guy they need to pick it up is Corey Hart, who again seems content with just being average. You want to pick on the bench, focus on Craig Counsell, who's hitting a career low .183.
  12. Moye (16 to 1 K to BB rate) is becoming a guy to keep an eye on.
  13. Am I the only one noticing the year Brett Carroll (.300/.374/.505, 13 HR, 45 RBI, 12 OF Assists) is having at Nashville? Why does everyone assume Boggs gets a call ahead of Carroll?
  14. Just wondering why Sean Halton's 3 hit night (2 more doubles) doesn't merit inclusion with the other 3 in the headline of this thread? His BA is now up to .326.
  15. We're at the point in the season where major league roster decisions need to be based solely on what helps the major league team, regardless of player development. If they were still 3-4 games up, I may have waited a bit longer. I would DFA both Kotsay and Wilson, activate Saito and bring up Brett Carroll. Gamel would become #1 lefty hitter off bench and Carroll would be #1 righthanded hitter off bench. Both would be improvements over Kotsay and Wilson. At some point, if McGehee doesn't pick it up, then I switch out Green for Gamel, because Green would have value in the field and still be able to PH when he's not playing. My guess is all they will do is activate Saito and send Gamel back down.
  16. You can hear his home run call via the Nashville game summary page. Plus he's killed lefties. I was skeptical of this guy early on, but he's convinced me. Brewers need a righthanded bench bat and I think Carroll should be given plenty of consideration.
  17. My suggestion of sending Gomez down is tied to bringing Brett Carroll up. You wouldn't do one without the other. Carroll can play CF and hits righthanded.
  18. Gomez certainly has his positives especially defensively, but really is it doing him any good playing once or twice a week and only against lefties? Carroll is having a really good year at AAA and is pounding lefthanded pitching. I don't see optioning Gomez as so much a demotion for him but a promotion for Carroll who at this point might be better suited as Morgan's platoon partner. The downside is that Gomez is such a positive team orientated rah rah guy, and he adds that to the team even when he's not doing much at the plate so maybe Carroll replacing Kotsay makes some sense, but that would further lesson Gomez' opportunities.
  19. Why all the love for Boggs and none for Brett Carroll? I realize Boggs' OPS and OBP are up there but he's hitting .243. Carroll is hitting .297 with decent OBP of .371 and slugging of .498. I'd like to see Gomez optioned and Carroll tried in the CF platoon. Carroll is tearing up lefties this year to the tune of .314/.432/.586. Plus he already has 12 outfield assists. Boggs is much better batting lefthanded, so I'm okay with him replacing Kotsay. But Carroll deserves a shot in Gomez' spot, in the CF platoon and as a right handed bench bat.
  20. Cameron's done. He's 38, has aches and pains, and he's hitting a Wil Nieves like .149.
  21. Nelson's been showing some improvement lately. He's gotten bit in an inning here and there, but the signs are encouraging at least. How about that doubles machine Sean Halton? He and Hunter Morris each lead the organization with 23 doubles. Morris' total is understandable with his power, but Halton's t is Overbay like in that he only has 5 HR to go with it.. First base has become a very deep position in the organization over the past year or so.
  22. I still think they will wait until after the Twin series to activate Saito. The bullpen will be rested going into Friday, so there's no need for a 12th pitcher. Then Gamel will go back down because there's just not enough opportunities.
  23. "His stuff just doesn't look that good". When Gallardo is on, his stuff looks electric. I agree with fondybrewerfan, we just haven't seen that from Greinke. Yeah he gets his K's but he also gets way too many pitches squared up.
  24. You won't hear announcers talk about it or beat writers mention it in their columns, but I think your observation is closer to the truth than any. It's all there for them on the road, nightlife, wine and of course, women.
