  1. His job would be to PH late in games vs. lefty relievers. Who would you rather have up there late in a game against a lefty specialist? The bench we have right now is Gerut, Counsell, Iribarren, and Heether. Three are lefthanded hitters, and one has never faced major league pitching. Where in my post did I mention defensive prowess or that he could play middle infield or that they need another middle infielder? I said he could "fill in" at 4 positions (RF, LF, 3B, 1B). He's played 60 career games in LF and 23 in RF (without an error). I know he's not accomplished as an outfielder but a lot of guys that see time out there aren't. That doesn't mean he couldn't fill in there for a game or an inning here and there. He also can play 3B and 1B and could DH against lefthanders in AL parks. But his value is his experienced major league bat off the bench.
  2. Stevo's right. If they had $15.75 to spend on an OF over the next 2 years, they could do better than Swisher. But they don't have close to that.
  3. I still think the Brewers need to address their lack of RH bench bats. Other than one 28 year old guy in Heether that's never appeared in a major league game, they have no viable candidates. It appears they have to get this bat cheaply too. Robb Quinlan has been a very serviceable bench bat for quite a while with some limited power and ability to at least fill in at 4 positions. He earned $1.1 million last year, and doesn't figure to get too much more than that in FA.
  4. Isn't the time for talking about Parra over? His troubles last year weren't the result of bad luck. He showed awful command. He walked 77 hitters in 140 innings. When he wasn't walking guys, he was getting behind them and coming in with, as Ennder points out, a very straight, very hittable fastball and that's why his BABIP was high. Yes we can hope he finds consistent command, but until he does, he's a bad pitcher. It's that simple.
  5. Rosenthal doesn't really contradict what Haudricourt said. Rosenthal says talks aren't ongoing but that they could start up again.
  6. Indeed. I got carried away at the thought the Cubs could trot the one guy out there that might be worse.
  7. Silva's stats in the Venezuelan winter league as of today: 9 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 3 HR, 3 BB, 2 SO. Suppan suddenly doesn't look so bad. Honestly I think unless he shows something in ST, the Cubs will cut Silva. Silva's been bad enough that he could be cut and not incur a protest from the player's union. As disruptive as Bradley was, if they had just released him, the union would have objected on Bradley's behalf.
  8. In another example of Melvin's preference for guys he drafted, TH is reporting the Brewers signed former Ranger Kameron Loe to a minor league deal. At worst, Loe, who's listed at 6'8" 225 takes the place of McClung in the post on the Brewer staff basketball team. According to TH, Loe pitched in Japan last year. No word on his results.
  9. I fear the only thing we will get in return when he does leave is a compensation draft pick That and about $12-15 million in salary relief that could buy you some pretty good talent is nothing to sneeze at nor is the opportunity to have 2 more years to watch him paired with Braun. That's all assuming there's zero chance of his signing an extension. Fielder is the Brewer version of Pujols. I don't think Attanasio is going to let him walk away without a huge effort and that makes the chances of him staying while not great, a lot better than zero. Bottom line though is: salary relief = compensation. Eventually, if you take multiple players for him, those guys will have to be paid sooner or later too (Ellsbury sooner, Bucholz later)
  10. While Melvin's on vacation I would hope Gord Ash is monitoring things and can reach him if needed. I suspect they are waiting to see if someone falls through the cracks and becomes a value sign. There's still a lot of guys out there and while some teams are still looking (Mets, Nationals, Angels, Yankees, maybe Cubs) at starters, the number is dwindling. They know they are on Washburn's preferred list and the other teams linked to him (M's and Twins) have made other moves, with M's getting Lee and the Pavano accepting arby offer from Twins. They didn't burn bridges when Looper's option was declined either and the market for Davis isn't very hot. So chances are there's going to be a bargain out there in another month they could snap up at a relatively low base with incentives.
  11. I think having Villanueva starting at Nashville gives the Brewers a better option for a call up starter then they had last year. I also think a big year down there starting could re-establish his potential as a starter which he lost early in 08 in a very limited amount of poor starts early that year.
  12. Assuming SD is open to dealing Adrian Gonzalez, why essentially "flood the market" by doubling the amount of available premier 1B? It would lower the value of both. If Fielder were out there being shopped, the Padres couldn't hold up Boston to the extent they are now. One big reason not to trade Fielder is that teams can get productive guys who play that position without giving up premier prospects assuming those teams have premier bats elsewhere in their lineups. It's really tough to get anywhere close to fair value for Fielder but it's certainly impossible with big bats still on the FA market and Adrian Gonzalez seemingly available for the right price. If the Brewers were ever to trade Fielder they should wait until there are at least two teams desperate enough to bid up the offers.
  13. Isn't Suppan theoretically worse than some minor league FA types too and doesn't having a guy like that in your rotation have a bigger negative effect than a backup OF? Look, neither of these guys is a net plus to your team considering their contracts. That goes without saying It's about eliminating the guy who would be in a position to do the most damage and that would be a starting pitcher.
  14. D-Backs current depth chart has 3 solid (if healthy) starters in Haren, Jackson, and Webb. Beyond them it's a bit of a jumble of young guys, none of who has had success in the big leagues so far, Ian Kennedy, Billy Buckner, Kevin Mulvey, and Brian Augenstein and Aaron Heilman who may be converted to a starter. That's not a very imposing group. Suppan might be as good an option in their 5th spot as those names. Byrnes is owed $11 million and is not figuring in their starting lineup due to 2 straight bad years. Yet he does fit the profile of a guy that the Brewers would have some use for. He's righthanded, can play all 3 OF positions, and might benefit from a change in scenary.
  15. If I'm the Mariners, I'm looking at adding a middle of the order bat, but until the FA crop dries up, why trade a good young pitcher to get one? For that matter any team that would have interest in either a Hart or a Gamel, is probably going to wait until the FA hitters are gone before trading a pitcher.
  16. What makes you think he'll be playing defense for the Sox? They have Alex Rios in CF, currently a possible platoon in RF with Kotsay and Andruw Jones, and Carlos Quentin in LF. I would guess Pierre would play some LF where his arm is less of a liability, but he'll also do a lot of DH'ing.
  17. Now we can only hope that something (injuries etc.) derails the Mariners and they will shop Lee in July.
  18. In King Felix and Cliff Lee, the M's have a 1-2 at the top of their rotation that could do what the Cards did with Carpenter/Wainwright. They could use another bat in the middle of their order but with Ichiro and Figgins at the top, they'll manufacture a ton of runs. Aumont is a big time pitching prospect but he's at least 2 years away. They could get a decent replacement with the picks they'll get.
  19. The pitching is a pretty mixed bag (lots of veterans and young guys mixed together) and hitting has an edge: Team ERAs range from 4.06 to 5.47, but the fact that Esocbar (now at .408 by the way after another 4 hit game), is nearly 30 points better than the number 2 guy surely is still impressive. The numbers he's putting up down there coupled with his decent numbers for the Brewers should have him brimming with confidence going into spring training.
  20. Villanueva having 2 could be interesting. Would it be more valuable to have him as long reliever or to have him return to starting in Nashville and provide rotation depth that could be called on at any time without a 40 man adjustment?
  21. Hart for Morrow saves about $2 million. They'd probably could get a Winn for around $4 million. If they wanted more pop and were willing to sacrifice some defense they might consider a guy like Marcus Thames and platoon him with Gerut.
  22. I really hope we trade for a starting pitcher Well since they have no money to replace Hart if he were dealt for a starter, and Gamel's value apparently isn't where they thought it would be or will be, it's not looking like any trade is imminent either. I just can't fathom the reasoning behind the Hawkins signing myself. Bullpen arms are available all over the place and that wasn't anywhere near as pressing a need. It's looking like that's the one that's preventing them from adding a starter.
  23. Lets hope he's not needed for 400 AB's again. He had a great year in 2009, but I'd prefer to see him under 200 ABs as that would mean the starters are producing and healthy. Two million is a bit steep for 200 or fewer ABs, but half a million of it is probably a bonus for last year. Glad it's only for one year. Brewers would be shortsighted to give a guy turning 40 in August more than one year.
  24. Gerut's a legit HR threat. Maybe not a big basher but certainly capable. One RH bat out there that's a real HR threat other than Gomes is Marcus Thames. But he's another guy who'd be looking a shot at a platoon somewhere.
  25. I know it will be a while before everyone realizes it, but Escobar is potentially the 3rd best hitter on this team and having him hit 9th while it makes for a nice 2nd leadoff guy, the missed PA aren't going to be worth it. If I'm going to hit the pitcher 8th, I'd have Gomez 9th, followed by Weeks and Escobar.
