  1. I think signing Sheets is doable. Whether it's wise to do so is another thing. There's plenty of salary potentially disappearing for 2009 especially if Luis Pena and one or two others (Stetter and Bray for instance) show they are major league relievers. I'm not saying Pena even needs to be ready to close in 2009, but Riske might not be a bad bridge in that role for one year. If Gagne ($10 million), Counsell ($2.8), Turnbow (3.2), Capuano ($3.75), Mota ($3.2), and Cameron (6.22), and Shouse (2.0) are all replaced by guys earning $10 million total, that saves $21 million. While much of that could be eaten by arby deals to Fielder and Weeks, lets keep in mind Attanasio has already opened up the wallet much more than anyone had projected. That takes care of 2009. That would leave just one year of Suppan's deal left. If Sheets has a great 2008, say 18-9, 3.20 ERA, 180K's, in top 5 in Cy Young voting, he'll approach $20 million per year in open market and that might be a bit rich for Brewers. But if he's a mere 16-11, 3.70 ERA, 160K's, I think that keeps him in the $16 million range per year which I think the Brewers can afford.
  2. I'm not worried about the Cardinals. They might have a little better starting pitching than I thought. But it's still pretty average. All those guys are capable of throwing a good game now and then and they happened to do it the first week. Their offense to me is still rather lackluster. Guys like Molina, Kennedy, Schumaker, Izturis, Ludwick, etc, don't do much for me. At best it's a .500 team, at worst it's a 70 win team.
  3. "I wonder if Rivera is catching because he has more experience with Parra?" Perhaps. But with an off day Monday, rather than start Kendall 4 straight days, then give him 2 off days, rest him today then start him Sunday. Rivera has taken Correia deep too. Rivera figures to get one start a week anyway. I'm a little scared of Gross in CF.
  4. Sanchez fastball down 3-4 mph this inning.
  5. I don't think I've ever seen a guy bunt for a hit with 2 outs, a runner on first and the pitcher due up next. Helps your BA, but doesn't do much for your team.
  6. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif I love it, since I work at home. Problem is, I live in Atlanta, so unless I pay for a TV package, I won't be watching the games after the Extra Innings free trial is over. Extra innings almost has me hooked. I havent looked into the price yet, anyone know how much it is for the season? It's $44.75 per month on Directv for 4 months if you order before April 6th.
  7. Did somebody post this game isn't 10-2? Well not quite yet.
  8. In the "who leaves rotation upon return of Gallardo sweepstakes", Bush grabs early lead.
  9. Getting through that just one run down was huge. The game could have gotten out of hand very easily. Then again it was all self inflicted.
  10. I think the "Cub rotation" is better talk stems from two things. The first is the relative durability of the Cub ace vs. the Brewer ace. Cramps aside, it's hard to argue that one until Sheets gets 30 or more starts. The second is that Carlos Villanueva is still flying under the radar in part because the Brewers have taken nearly two years to believe their eyes instead of their radar guns. He's generated no buzz nationally and very little locally. The fact is that Gallardo should turn out to be better than any Cub starter who's name starts from A to Y. Sheets is the equal of Zambrano if he can match his number of starts. The rest of the Brewer rotation should be at worst on par with the 3-4-5 guys the Cubs throw out there.
  11. Riske threw 9 pitches Monday, then had Tuesday off. I don't think it was an issue. Mota is totally rested and ready to go tomorrow. That they didn't use Turnbow in either game is telling though.
  12. I was at the game. My observations are that: Braun is locked in at the plate. If it's possible, he could be better this year than he was last. Hall looked sharp defensively at third. OF defense was also solid. Suppan was vintage Suppan. He made pitches when he had to all day. I still don't think he should go beyond 6 innings and 100 pitches though. Great to see the emotion displayed by Torres when he got out of the 7th. Riske is one cool customer and I think he could close if it comes to that. By 9th, most of Cub fans had left leaving a vocal contingent of Brewer fans.
  13. After securing a box seat ticket on ebay yesterday at roughly 1/3 of face, I'll be heading down to the dump they call Wrigley around noon. Weather right now sunny and cool. No chance of rain it appears.
  14. What another dump on Tony Gwynn thread? Aren't there about a dozen of those around? Can't he just be appreciated for what he is? A good defensive outfielder, who can run a bit, and who should hit for decent average with little power. I like him but I've never said he's the next Kenny Lofton, or that he's going to hit like his dad. I've said all along he can be a serviceable major league outfielder. He might be a starter for some teams or a very useful backup. He was a 2nd round pick. Those guys are usually held in pretty high regard if they show anything. He hasn't been a bust nor has he cost the Brewers anything in the standings. His minor league stats are not terrible. He actually did better in the higher levels. That's usually a good sign. Can we just let the kid play until he's had enough AB's to make a reasonable judgement?
  15. He had much better location after the HR. He also might have gotten squeezed on a pitch or two to Fukudome so he had to come in behind in the count. His velocity was good though. I liked the way he didn't crack after allowing that tying HR and got them to the 10th.
  16. "It's that some people think he's been given an unfair advantage because of his last name" That indeed is absurd. The advantage he's gotten is due to his status as a high round 2 pick, not his name. All high round picks get advantages over lower round picks. High round picks don't need to put up dazzling stats to get moved up in the system. Their moved up because of what their potential is thought to be. Gross got the same treatment coming through the Blue Jay system as a number one pick. He never set the world on fire in the minor leagues either but moved up real fast. But now at 28 with over 600 fairly modest ML AB's, he is what he is, a solid major league bench player.
  17. I'll say this about Gagne. He showed me something after giving up the HR. With no outs and the game tied, he got them to the 10th by getting 4 outs. He made much better pitches once the game was tied.
  18. My guess is the only reason they pushed back the start to 2 is to allow time for pregame festivities.
  19. Just heard that Tom Skilling says later this afternoon, sun will shine pushing temps into 60s!
  20. Just checked outside again. Rain has diminished to a drizzle. Sky is considerably brighter than it's been all day. Fog has totally lifted too.
  21. It's raining pretty good now here (about 6-7 miles NNW of Wrigley) but as has been pointed out, most of the rain has ended west of the Fox River. I would expect a slight delay but they're going to get this one started at some point fairly close to schedule.
  22. It looks as if the rain will arrive around noon to 1 but will be out of the way about 90 minutes later. I would expect a start time of around 2 with a decent chance they can get it in before rain returns toward evening.
  23. I'm stationed roughly 5 miles north and 2 miles west of Wrigley. Right now it's heavy overcast to almost foggy, cool low 40's, with a mist in the air. The heavy rain went through several hours ago. I'll keep you posted as the day progresses. Here's a suggestion for Ned to ponder. If at game time radar indicates they can only get 2 or 3 innings in, then start McClung, so when the game is called after 3 innings you'll have Sheets ready to go on Tuesday, while Zambrano will be used up for the series.
  24. I still don't understand flip flopping Braun and Fielder when both were so productive in that order last year. Now they make Braun's job even tougher by protecting him with Hall instead of Hart? Not to mention how well Hart did when he finally settled in the 5 spot. Yost gets these goofy ideas from somewhere but they sure aren't from a stat sheet.
  25. I was wondering if Turnbow got booed last night. Had I been there, I probably would have given him a pass because it's an exhibition. But I'm sure these people weren't so much booing Turnbow last night, but the decision to bring him back. Booing isn't classless. It's a sign of passion. These players get paid money most of us can only dream of. Every fan should and does have a level of performance expectation. If the player isn't meeting that expectation, what you want to cheer him?
