  1. Parra could look like Johan Santana all spring but unless they make room for him, he'll start the year in Nashville. Such are the realities of today's baseball contracts.
  2. Weeks needs to avoid dry spells more than anything else. He's critical to their success. The Brewers lost 6 1/2 games of their lead in July when Weeks was hitting .125/.279/.143.
  3. Stone replaces Chris Singleton who's taking his "talent" to Baseball Tonight. Espn radio reported Buck wants to "go to games as a fan". My guess is he doesn't want any part of Cardinals losing 95 or so games.
  4. Rivera as a Brewer in 06 and 07: 155 ABs. .265/.322/.477, 8 HR 27 RBI Yeah that really sucks. And before you point to his AAA stats in 07 to back you up endaround, look at what he did in 05 (.895 OPS) and 06 (.827). Defensively, not a great arm (did gun down a runner yesterday), but is close to average (27 for 101) caught stealing in majors. Has not allowed a passed ball in 40 starts as a Brewer. I wouldn't categorize that as bad.
  5. Let's not get too carried away. He threw out Figgins twice on Saturday.
  6. What indication has any Brewer official given that Munson is the front runner? Isn't that just speculation? Yost was quoted that they are looking for solid defense, a good handler of pitchers, and a guy capable of knocking one out of the park occasionally. Rivera fits that description as well as anyone if not better. Munson's best feature is that he's lefthanded but I don't think that will be the deciding factor. Rivera has more familiarity with the pitchers, and I think that will hold more weight. I also think this staff is going to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy who's been here. Age shouldn't be a factor (after all they are all at least 2 years younger than Kendall) but experience is and Rivera is the only one of the three who's caught his entire career. Whoever wins the job isn't a future starter, he's a backup catcher for a year or two at the most. Munson is going to have to show he's clearly an upgrade.
  7. Keep an eye on D-Back's Juan Cruz. Has closer stuff and will be a FA.
  8. Not to beat a dead horse, but the Cubs manager has actually won something. The Cubs also play 3 vs. TB instead of 3 vs. the Red Sox. The Cubs also have the means and the supply of young talent to pull off deals if they need to. The Cubs ace actually starts every 5th day. The Brewers have the talent to overcome all of this but it's not going to be easy.
  9. No. Just move Braun back to third, and Gabe Gross starts in left. That's not going to happen.
  10. Worst case scenario you send some excess pitching to Detroit for Brandon Inge.
  11. That's fine but how can you ignore last year's splits? Braun hit .332/.379/.643 batting 3rd ahead of Fielder. He batted just .227/.277/.500 batting 4th. Conversely, Fielder hit better batting 4th: .304/.424/.677 than he did batting 3rd: .262/.345/.524. Hart raked in the 5 hole and should stay there. You don't play small ball with Fielder or Braun.
  12. If you guys recall, Spiezio was "too emotional" to play in the first few games following the death of Josh Hancock. What wasn't said was that he was likely with him drinking that night.
  13. Bush. I like the way he approaches his job. He never seems to let his emotions get the best of him. He'd be a sure fire 15 game winner if the manager would learn take him out a batter or two earlier. Hall. I've always liked him on and off the field. He's not the best or most talented but in a lot of ways, he's a leader and they need their leader to be productive.
  14. I think the Prior situation is the best example. Prior got around $3.5 million for 2007 which was his second arby year which followed an injury plagued 06 in which he earned slightly more than that. So he did take a slight cut. Of course he ended up not pitching at all for Cubs in 07. This year they wanted him to accept a low ball option year that protected the Cubs if he rebounded this year. He didn't take it and they non-tendered him. So Padres got him for $1 million with a bunch of incentives.
  15. David Wright had more total AB's in the 4th and 5th spots (322) than he did in the 2nd and 3rd spots (282) and stole more bases (18) in those spots than he did in the other two (16). Hart did run a bit more when he led off, but still had 9 steals combined in the 5th, 6th, and 7th spots, in 62 games, which over 162 translates to 23.5. So it's not that big a stretch to get to 30.
  16. I give him a C+. The two primary needs were bullpen help and a lefthanded high average, high OBP hitter (either OF or 3B) to hit 2nd in the order between Weeks and Braun. He did okay with the pen, but the Estrada/Mota trade was dumb especially in light of getting Torres too. How many $3-4 million righthanders do they need in the pen? Getting Gagne was fine (though I preferred Percival). He failed to get the high average, high OBP lefthanded hitter. Cameron was not a horrible choice as an alternative, but he makes the lineup unbalanced and that is going to show more than some think. The defensive upgrade he provides may be enough to offset the lineup imbalance but overall I see it as no better than a wash. As for catcher, there wasn't much out there, but I think some of the money he is spending on mediocre excess pitching could have been used to at least go after something a little better than Kendall who at best is a minor upgrade. But his major failure (so far) is in clearing some dead money off the payroll. I know they drew well last year and should this year too, but since when does this franchise think they can afford to go to camp with 11 pitchers making over $2 million (9 over $3 million), several of whom are no better than near minimum salary guys they have ready? Bottom line, I don't think the the moves make much difference. Improvement has to come primarily from holdovers. Weeks and Hall need to produce and Sheets has to start 30 games.
  17. He's a 30/30 threat that is for sure whether it's this year or not. I would not put it past Weeks either. His September numbers: 9 HR, 10 steals. Has any team had two 30/30 guys in the same year?
  18. Virtually all online ticket sources add charges. Still, I was able to get 4 Brewer field level tickets to a June weekday afternoon game last year for around $17 each so even with their charges, I paid well under face. I didn't have to pay for shipping either because I ordered them the day prior to the game. They email you with a location near Miller Park where you just pick them up. The seller on stubhub sets the price. Most list their tickets well over face, but once in a while somebody who really needs to dump them (like a group with extras) will list them at a bargain price to ensure they don't get stuck with them. In fact during the 2006 football season, I found a pair of endzone seats to a Packer game listed at face value (while the rest were double or more face), I didn't hesitate a second and bought them with no problem. Don't overlook EBAY for tickets either. I snared great seats to a Brewer-DBack game in July on Ebay for about half of face. The seller turned out to be a Scottsdale, AZ based ticket broker who undoubtedly had them leftover from some D-Back road fan tour.
  19. Not to knock Gross who I agree is a good bench player to have, but I've never seen a bench player who is untouchable and neither is Gross. Good teams generally have depth but it's the starters that need to be difference makers. All you have to do is look at the 82 Brewers. Their bench of Marshall Edwards, Mark Brouhard, Ed Romero, and Ned whatshisname (his big HR vs. Red Sox notwithstanding), was nothing special. Had any of their core gotten hurt, they would have been in trouble.
  20. The timing of Sheets contract expiring when virtually their entire core will be entering arby years certainly does not bode well for being able to keep him and based on what they've gotten for 3/4 of this contract, that might not be a bad thing. Who knows what they will do though. I never expected them to come into a camp with 11 pitchers making over $2 million (most over $3 million) or utility infielders for $3 million, so maybe there's more revenue than we've always been led to believe.
  21. Actually Braun 2nd isn't a bad idea. They really don't have an ideal number 2 hitter anyway and batting in that spot (ahead of Fielder in the 3 spot) not only assures your two best hitters bat in the first inning, it might help Braun develop a bit more patience which is the only real area where he's human. Further, say Braun gets on with one out instead of two ahead of Fielder. He could get an opportunity to run if Fielder makes the 2nd out. I'm not reel keen on Kendall hitting 9th though I could see it with Gallardo pitching.
  22. Al, they have 11 pitchers making over $2 million, 9 of whom make over $3 million, and as many as 5 others (Gallardo, Villanueva, Parra, Stetter, Choate) who could deserve to make the team. That's 16 major league pitchers. Sure if they can wait until late in spring, fine. But even with Gallardo's minor setback, they still can afford to deal one pitcher. Where they are lacking in pitching as an organization is at the AAA and AA levels where they are having to get guys in their 30's to fill rosters. You can only pitch one guy at a time. Depth is fine to have but it can be a negative if you are talking about taking guys based on their contract and options situation rather than their ability.
  23. Any interest in any Brewer spare player should be looked at as an opportunity to unload an extra pitcher. Right now the Padres website has Mark Prior listed as their 5th starter. They could use a backup plan. Gross doesn't figure to get many starts with Braun in LF and Hart in RF. How about Gross and Vargas for Inman and/or Garrison back?
  24. Haha, I went to this year's NFC Championship Game. Believe me, I KNOW what cold is.... Either way, I'm definitely looking to support our Brewers at Wrigley. Football and baseball are two different animals all together.
  25. I bought tickets online for $5 for a game on April 25th last year a couple weeks before the game. No need to rush. Stubhub has nearly 4,000 tickets for the May 1st day game. Many Cub fans unload day game tickets in April for well under face value. Keep in mind that opening series is first week of April. In recent years, only a snow storm will stop them from playing. But I have to warn you if you haven't experienced Wrigley on a cold day, you don't know what cold is. That place with the wind blowing and in the 30's is absolutely brutal. It's worse than any day ever at County Stadium and you can't get in the facilities all that easily. Wrigley has zero charm when it's 33 degrees.
