  1. "The funny part is...they forgot Capauano" What makes you think they forgot him? Frankly, the only place Capuano gets so much love is here.
  2. Listening to Yost has become fingernails on the blackboard. Killed my buzz in the first 10 minutes of the show.
  3. They're reportedly talking with Josh Fogg and don't forget they'll get another starter candidate in Humber.
  4. DrWood, I like the idea of a starter for Betemit, but I wouldn't be ready to start him over or equal to Hall. I'd use him against the tough righthanders maybe once or twice a week. If I could get Betemit for Vargas and Counsell (who the Yankees could use as middle infield backup), now that would make sense, especially now with Nunez in the organization.
  5. I'd like to know who voted for Yost Jerry Augustine gets 4 votes but my all time favorite Johnny Briggs, who at the time the Brewers traded him was carrying a .447 OBP still gets zero? Are you kidding? Briggsie, you were just ahead of your time. Nobody valued on base percentage in those days.
  6. I really don't understand why Yost was brought back. While pondering how to rank the NL, it really struck me how even the top 8 or 9 teams really are. Yost is at or near the bottom of those 9 if you ranked the managers. It's a huge reason I'm not bursting with confidence because I can't trust him. Why they didn't make a play for Torre really rankles me. He's expensive sure, but they could have nontendered a couple guys and paid his salary. Joe has Milwaukee ties. He goes back nearly 50 years with Uecker.
  7. Couldn't disagree with you more Al. Turnbow has never once in 210 appearences as a Brewer gone beyond 2 innings. In fact, he's reached 2 innings just twice.Turnbow is way too inefficient with his pitches to pitch multiple innings. If you would have said Torres, maybe, but not Turnbow.
  8. There's not just a glut of starters, there is a glut of pitchers period. There are 13 pitchers for 12 spots not counting Parra, McClung, Stetter or Choate for which a case could easily be made for inclusion on the 25 man roster. There are 5 right handed short relievers. That's one more than needed. Most 12 man rosters contain one long reliever/spot starter, one middle reliever who can go 2-3 innings, and 5 short relievers including one or two lefties. Assuming Vargas, Capuano, or Bush becomes the long man/spot starter, that leaves the middle reliever spot open. It's a lot easier in my book converting a starter to middle reliever than it is converting a one inning guy into a 2-3 inning guy. In fact, they did just that with Capuano for a period late last season. So I say they should trade a short reliever. Now since 4 of the 6 short relievers were just acquired, I doubt they will turn around and trade any of those guys. That leaves Turnbow and Shouse. Now Shouse is the lone lefty and would have to be replaced by either Stetter or Choate, so even if he was traded, it wouldn't solve th glut. Therefore the logical guy to trade is Turnbow.
  9. Fear, You make excellent points (you even forgot to mention that Matt Wise is listed as 3rd guy in the bullpen depth chart). Still if Martinez is healthy, and Perez pitches like he did last year, they have 4 pretty tough starters. I honestly think any of 9 teams could get to the World Series.
  10. MillerParkSouth, I live in Chicago area. This has been the consensus of the entire Chicago media including print, talk radio etc. It's nothing new. To them an NL Central title is a foregone conclusion. Even "experts" like Steve Stone has been saying that the Cubs are far and away the best of the division. In fact I've yet to hear one comment from anyone either in the Sun Times, Tribune, or radio, that anyone including the Brewers in the Central is even so much as a threat to the Cubs. The Cubs were 9 1/2 games better than the Brewers from June 29th on. So there is some basis for their optimism. The Cubs are getting heavily bet in Vegas too.
  11. 1. Mets 2. Diamondbacks 3. Rockies 4. Brewers 5. Cubs 6 Dodgers 7. Phillies 8. Padres 9. Braves 10. Astros 11. Reds 12. Nationals 13. Marlins 14. Giants 15. Pirates 16. Cardinals Any of the top 9 are realistic playoff contenders. I think the NL will beat the AL head to head this year. While I tend to agree the D-Backs weren't as good as their record last year, they added Blanton which is almost as significant as Mets adding Santana.
  12. Bedard isn't a FA until 2010, so you'd get him for 2 years at least. I'd have no problem including Parra and Bush in such a deal. A rotation of Sheets, Bedard, Gallardo, Villanueva and Suppan would make the Brewers a 95 win team.
  13. Johann Santana and Dan Haren, two AL All Stars are now in the NL. Most of the brighest young stars in the game like Fielder, Braun, Holliday, H. Ramirez, Wright, Howard, Utley, Tulowitzki, Pence, and so on are National Leaguers. Isn't it time to end this myth that somehow the NL is the JV league?
  14. I can hear the Orioles laughing from here. Brewer junk for a premium pitcher. Right. Unless you include either Parra or Villanueva, and a prospect like Escobar or Gamel, they wouldn't even call you back.
  15. Davis posted a WHIP that was worse than Vargas or Suppan, neither of whom would be Brewers had they kept Davis. It's amazing he had as good a year as he did. Ennder is probably right that he benefitted from better defense. Of course it could well be argued that Davis at $22 million is better value than Suppan for $42 million. But there was no guarantee Davis would have re-signed with the Brewers.
  16. Gopher74, The stat you pointed out about Howry allowing a run in 18 games vs. 15 for Turnbow misses the point entirely. Look at this comparison: Howry # of times allowing 1 Run 10 2 Runs 4 3 Runs 3 4 Runs 1 Turnbows # times allowing 1 Run 5 2 Runs 3 3 Runs 4 4 Runs 2 5 Runs 1 Turnbow allowed 3 or more runs 7 times compared to just 4 times by Howry, not once in the second half. It's not how many times you allow a run it's how many runs do you allow. Allow one run and you're still in the game, often still ahead. Allow 3 or more like Turnbow did more often, you are either blowing what should be a safe lead or making it very difficult for your offense to recover.
  17. Any series vs. the Cubs is a big series. Not because they are the Cubs, but because they are defending division champs and the team to beat and quite frankly the talk in Chicago is that there is no competition in the division. The sooner the Brewers can squash that notion, the better. But it's 3 games, and no matter what happens, they have 3 more in Chicago at the end of April. That 2nd series is bigger as far as momentum and confidence going forward as they won't meet again until late July. Is Zambrano making out the Cubs lineup card? I'll believe he won't start opening day when I hear it from Lou Piniella. I think he was joking. Zambrano will start the opener.
  18. Think about the Brewer high picks that are making an impact and then ask yourself where are those guys on the Pirates? Maholm was a high pick who has been okay, but they have no recent high picks playing in their everyday lineup. Guys like Bay, Sanchez and LaRoche are fine players. If you had 2 or 3 young studs around them you'd have a solid lineup to go with what isn't a horrible group of young starters led by Snell and Gorzelany.
  19. I'm going to say Riske and Torres will have the biggest impact if they can keep Turnbow out of high leverage situations. To me the two guys that made the difference for the Cubs last year were Marmol and Howry. Marmol was spectacular for most of the season. Howry, though never spectacular, was dependable and solid in game after game for Cubs allowing more than 1 run just once in 39 appearences after the All Star break. The Brewers couldn't match those two guys shutting down oppenents and getting to the closer. I think Cameron will have an impact on defense, but it could well be offset on offense by making the lineup too righthanded.
  20. The Pirates problem is in their drafting and player development. They draft right up there near the top every year but have nothing to show for it.
  21. Wow, everyone now questioning Fukudome would be dancing in the streets had the Brewers signed him. I guess all of you now are smarter than most scouts. Look, I'm far from the only one who thinks the Cubs are going to be good. Granted a lot of Cub fans visit Vegas every year, but Cubs are odds on favorites not just to win the division but the NL. I'm not trying to rain on everyone's parade, but I think some of our enthusiasm has to be tempered with the reality that it's not going to be a walk in the park. The Cubs, even without an owner basically, have shown they will spend whatever it takes and they do have young players they can deal. Not only that, they have the confidence that comes from winning the division last year and deep down the Brewers are going to have doubts until they actually do it. All that is not that easy to overcome.
  22. I think he could be really good. Hitting .283 at AA at the same age as a guy coming off his sophomore year in college?
  23. Looking ahead to 09, I'd be all over Juan Cruz who will be a FA. He's got closer stuff, but because he hasn't closed before, he should come at a reasonable price.
  24. Not only as patrickgpe pointed out that Hall hasn't played 3B in more than a year actually, but he has hardly played third his entire career. Remember Hall played SS primarily both in the big leagues and the minors. He also played some 2b in the minors, but he hasn't played all that much third anywhere.
  25. If I were Koskie and wanted to try a comeback, I'd start out playing indy league baseball near home in St. Paul. No major league team is going to take a chance on him at this point until he proves ready to stand up to the daily rigors of the game.
