  1. BA Tweet: "had forgotten that Auburn 1B Hunter Morris was falling; taken behind teammate Trent Mummey, but good value for MIL for SEC POY"
  2. Cory Vaughn is Greg's son. Does this mean we get Marc Newfield Jr.?
  3. BA tweets . . . "Lincecum Lite in RHP Tyler Thornburg, who is 5-foot-11, 190, beat Florida early in season, will give up hitting, may move quick in bullpen"
  4. There was a parting of the ways in philosophy between he and owner Tom Hicks over the Alex Rodriguez signing, then Boras' influence over the team drafting his client Vince Sinisi and his $2 Mil signing bonus in the 2nd rd, none of which Melvin wanted. He certainly had done little wrong before that. Except lose to the Yankees in the playoffs.
  5. I don't know about everybody else, but I'm confused on how you think it's so EASY to aquire and develop. There are 30 other teams (and the Pirates) and all of them covet first and most high velocity starters and even then the failure rate for those pitchers is high. Just look at one that COULD have been obtained in the Lee deal, Edison Volquez. Boom goes the dynamite. Risk is inherent with young pitching. It's not like Zack Greinke and Felix Hernandez developed overnight. anf King Felix WAS pretty quick. Look at me, now I'm kinda defending TINSTAAPP. Black is white.
  6. Really? You mean the same award Jim Bowden won in 1999? .... EDIT: TLB beat me to the Melvin punch, so I'll throw in Sabean winning it in 2003 and that Schuerholtz won it a total of once, with the Royals in 1985, and that Sandy Alderson, Beane, Epstein and Cashman have NEVER won it.
  7. Please source. LaMar was the GM and Tim Wilkens and Cam Bonifay ran the scouting departments. None of whom are particularly shrinking violets. Most of the time Dir. of Player Ops deal with arby cases, here's a Q&A with the current one in Tampa , they have usually have nothing to do with the draft. . . Sternberg wasn't in charge yet and Freidman's definitely his guy. And he was inexperienced enough at the time when they made him GM,that they made sure Hunsicker was there to help him with the ropes.
  8. I find this kinda funny because St. Louis for the most part is exactly the opposite of this, relying on scrap heap pitchers reclaimed by Dave Duncan and forgoing player development by trading off their prospects for usable major leaguers, and winning doing it. My only complaint about Melvin is he lacks that crucial edge that John Schuerholtz had in spades, the ability to trade away that "projectable pitcher" or hitting stud for someone who helps you win now, at the major league level. Hall should have been flipped when Hall had value. Every now and then Schuerholtz would give up a Adam Wainright, but for every one of him there were six David Neid's and Dan Meyer's. Melvin tries too hard to straddle these two philosophies, but the point is, as always, there's more than one way to do this.
  9. And Hellickson was drafted in '05 before he got there. His long term deals to young players are no different than what Jon Hart tried to do in Cleveland 15 years ago, and that didn't work exactly to perfection. They had their window 'tho. But Hart isn't actually considered a legend now. There is always risk *cough* Ted Higuera *cough* involved. Harder to do that drafting in the #25 and up spot rather than #1-3 I'm just saying give it a few years before bumping Branch Rickey and John Schuerholtz.
  10. And both Oakland and the Twins have had those stretches, and when Freidman showed up the cupboard was already stocked. Somebody earlier mention he obtained Kazmir, but Scott was already there (traded for in 04) and Shields, Neimann and Wade Davis were also already in the pipe. He Aquired TWO members of their current rotation and one of those guys was the no brainer #1 overall pick. Jackson was a nice find, but he flipped him for a player who's upside is a 4th OF. Don't get me wrong, The Garza\Young deal was a stunning success and one that most likely any other GM doesn't have the stones to pull off, but there was plenty left there to pick up the pieces if it Young exploded the other way, including two #1 overall picks and a #3 from 90 loss seasons. Selling Kazmir has worked out too, so far, but it's all tied up in Alex Torres' elbow. A lot of GM's could have not punted on that farm system. He's put together a very nice orginazation, but he didn't build it from scratch (or alone) and it's once these guys start hitting arby years when it starts getting really tough.
  11. Wow has Billy Beane's star fallen to the point where I'm his defender? Two good years in Tampa and Freidman's the golden child. He also has old school Gerry Hunsicker right in the room with him. Also whoever ran down Daniels failings forgot Adrian Gonzalez AND Chris Young for Adam Eaton. Ouch. You're referring to THAT Andy McPhail, right? The one that ran the Cubs for 12 Years?
  12. was watching that game live and I have never seen Ichiro! show that much emotion other than joy. He was absolutely livid with rage. I wasn't much happier. It wasn't like watching Yost walking Howard to have Shouse pitch to Burrell anger, but it was up there. At least get out of the way dude.
  13. The 7D is the new purchase, for it's HD Video for taking cute movies of my new daughter, problem is, on the photo side, the camera raw files are in a new format that only Photoshop CS4 can read. I have that at home, but at work where I do a lot of my processing I only have CS3 so half of my stuff I can't work on there. It's been a little frustrating. I've also been a little frustrated lately with my candids which are kinda my bread and butter, when I pull the 70-200 f/2.8 lens outta the bag, people really get offended. nobody seems to care when the iphone makes an appearance. I guess I just need to find someone who WANTS to have me take their picture. I have no clue how to make that happen.
  14. i'm totally middlebrow. I shoot a Canon 5D (MkI), a Canon 7D, a Canon 30D and the Hipstamatic iPhone App. It's taken awhile, and a patient wife to accumulate the bodies and glass. I also use photoshop everyday for a living so that helps.
  15. The Sexson deal worked out okay, and when he dealt in Texas he was pretty good too.
  16. And be it either Yost or Melvin (I'm thinking Yost), I'm still a little cheesed at how Mike Adams was run outta town.
  17. Shaaa-whaaa???? How long you been watching? Jeffrey Hammonds, Jeff Leonard, Kevin Reimer, Marc Newfield, Chuckie Carr, Sean Berry, Gary Sheffield, Franklin Stubbs?? You calling out Nix? Strong words.
  18. Needed to revive this, just 'cause I'm ecstatic how this one turned out. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/4522780831_85cf8d41e2.jpg
  19. don't get hurt, don't get hurt, don't get hurt, don't get hurt, don't get hurt, don't get hurt, don't get hurt. *sacrifices a Teddy Higuera rookie card*
  20. and that beard . . . so dreamy . . .
  21. those dudes behind the plate need to be banned from the stadium
  22. Even better, ripping a single guy in his mid/late twenties for celebrating the fact that he's just been handed $20 million. I know I would have headed right to the gym if i were in his shoes.
  23. A fact which doesn't make Washington a bad team. with St. Mary's win over Villanova methinks the west coast teams were a little underrated in the seeding.
