  1. I went to the game tonight. My wife and I got there a little early (around 6:15 p.m.) only to find out the Express' equipment hadn't arrived yet. The game was delayed 1 hour to 8:05 p.m. which I didn't appreciate much due to the heat (about 95 degrees). As previously mentioned, most of the game was decided in the first inning as a Warren Morris HR, followed by an error and several walks gave the Sounds a 3-0 lead. The next few innings were fairly uneventful as Rick Helling was pitching well. He must have been changing speeds well as his fastball was sitting 86-88 (topped at 90 once I saw). I was hoping to see Prince have a nice game but he wound up with the 0'fer. He was getting ahead in the count, but just wasn't making good contact. He is probably a bit rusty from the couple weeks of only pinch hitting. The player that impressed me the most was Nelson Cruz. He was 3-3 (already noted in another post) but also had an outstanding sliding catch on a pop-up just behind the infield. Nelson Cruz is just a man. I can't wait to see him get a shot in the majors. I think he will go before Corey because of his Def. Corey Hart also had a good game. Almost all of his ABs ended with him hitting the ball hard (errors included) and he swiped 2 or 3 bags. Nice wheels, but the pitchers were not holding him well. He still looked "uncomfortable" in LF and I would have given him an error on a ball to LF. It was a high fly ball right along wall in foul territory. There was plenty of room to make the catch but he kind of whiffed and luckily the ball landed foul. Mike Adams pitched and had a quick inning. Good to see. Jose Capellan finished the game. At first I was surprised by his lack of velocity (only 88-91 for the first two batters) but he dialed it up a little later. For the last two batters he was sitting 93-96 and got Brooks Kieschnick to fly out on a 95 mph fastball to finish the game. Good game. I can't go tomorrow but I am hoping to go on Sunday night.
  2. I will be at the Express/Sounds game tonight. I will post a summary and pictures later.
  3. If Helms was batting 7th or 8th it wouldn't be as bad. What is brutal is having a career .739 OPS player batting 5th (Sad thing is, no one below is any better). He also has hands of stone at 3rd. If I were Pierre, I would leadoff the game with a bunt down the 3rd base line.
  4. Clark Weeks Hall Lee Helms Magruder Hardy Moeller Sheets Absolutely brutal.
  5. There is a positive about how Schroeder/Prince interview. Prince handled the questions about his dad with class. Stay classy Prince!!!
  6. I think he just misses out on the top 10
  7. Looks like Prince left the game in the 7th (Def. sub.). Catching an early flight to Tampa???
  8. I have not seen this posted anywhere else. Ryan Braun and the Miami Hurricanes take on Alex Gordon and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Game 1 of a Super Regional. Game 1 is at noon on Friday on ESPN. Tune in to check out our #1 draft pick (and to see how he compares to Alex Gordon). I will have the TiVo set for this one!
  9. Mothership, I need to watch it on FSNSW also. The Rangers are on, but on DirecTV there is FSN SW Alternate which says it will be Astros/Brewers at 7:00. Look for a FSN Alternate.
  10. Come on. It could be worse, like last year. We would have had LF MacGruder, CF Pods, RF Clark, 3B Helms, SS Hall, C Moeller, 1B Overbay, 2B Spivey. Now THAT would be brutal.
  11. Geoff Jenkins will have a HR and a double today, temporarily silencing his many critics.
  12. Prince with an opposite field 2-run bomb. 3 rbi on the night for the big fella!
  13. Rogers night is complete. He gave up 6 runs (5 earned), with 4 BB and 2K in 3 innings. Not a great start.
  14. I get the same error. I wouldn't worry too much, Square is probably on it!
  15. Just watched the game (in fast forward) on the TiVo. After seeing De La Rosa pitch today, it is hard to not be excited. His curveball is absolutely devastating to a left handed hitter. It has a 11-5 bend and really buckles the knees. Willie Harris had no chance (twice) and Scotty Po ducked on a pitch that just missed being a strike. Other interesting observations was it appears he is taking some off his fastball to improve the location. The gun was reporting on CSNC on some pitches and his fastball hung around 90 (when he threw it for a strike). Other times, including his WP, he really let it go and was mid 90's easily. De La Rosa also showed a nice changeup that had a lot of movement to it. At worst, I think he will be a good lefty reliever this year and a limitless potential moving forward. Now I can see how some have compared him to Johan Santana. Remaining options or no, Milwaukee is the right place for him. Maddux seems to have already worked wonders. Hopefully they can keep it up.
  16. Square, Feel free to move this, but I am not sure people read the Issues thread regularly. I went to LMG's PackerChatters website and someone has hacked their EZBoard and turned their posts into garbage. Not sure if there is anything else you can do to protect, but just a heads up. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif
  17. Yikes.....tough crowd. I'm sure that the ball could have been played better but I highly doubt that single play made or broke the game on its own. Give the kid a chance. Is staying back on a ball laziness or could it be indecision?? I think it will be pretty tough to tell the difference between the two and I will give him the benefit of the doubt. That said, this will be an important year for Rickie to improve again in the field. In a game against Rockies a few weeks ago, the Rockies announcers were talking about Ian Stewart and how some people will be disappointed if "he's not in the hall of fame after his first 6 years". Basically, I liked the comment because we do need to manage our expectations in regards to our prospects. Each of them will have a weakness.
  18. UfitzW, looks like it will be on DirecTV channel 645 at 2p.m. for sure. I am optimistic as I watched some of the Dodgers/Mets game last night live on another FSN channel. This would apply to anyone that gets the FSN pack (whoever the provider is). You want to tune into FSNRM (Rocky Mountain).
  19. Come on guys...... The Brewers HAVE to take the Best Player Available with significant upside remaining. The draft is the only way to bring a stream of "future stars" to the Brewers. We can't afford to bring in big salaried MLB stars (see Carlos Lee) every year. Attanasio said yesterday on talking Brewers that 40 million is break even. Yes, if we start to contend or attendance approaches 3 million, that will change a little. But not a lot. Primarily, the only stars we will see are those we draft ourselves. If the Brewers drafted college players at a position of need, we likely would only wind up with more Antone Williamsons. Hopefully the stars will align and the Brewers will get the best of both worlds this year. How would you feel if the Brewers passed up B.J. Upton for Bryan Bullington?? That would have been a Sal Bando move. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif
  20. Not sure if I anyone else got to see the Florida Miami game yesterday but it was interesting. I definately came away impressed with Carrillo. He has 3 good pitches. Fastball (likely low to mid 90's), a 12-6 curve that he can throw for strikes and another offspeed pitch. It could have been a hard changeup or a slider. Anyways, it had a lot of sideways movement. His line doesn't look that great but Florida has some good hitters and the D was questionable at times. Braun had a very rough night on Def. His fielding was slick, but he does not have the throw to first from third mastered yet. He had at least 1 error and could have had more. The Sun Network announcers commented on how he was throwing at a 3/4 angle instead of over the top. Many of his throws were low or in the dirt. As Colby mentioned, he is still learning the position. IMHO, the throwing problems should be correctable. Sadly, it is drizzling here in Austin today. I refused to sit through a rain delay and sit in the drizzle so no UT/Stanford for me.
  21. Thanks fellas. I do like Teagarden and feel his offensive potential has not been tapped yet. Hopefully he puts it all together this year. I haven't seen Clement yet, but USC, Nebraska, Rice, and Texas A&M are playing in the Round Rock Classic in my backyard in early March. Unfortunately I have a wedding to go to that weekend so I am fairly certain my wife isn't going to let me out for that one. That place will be jammed with scouts and will be some good baseball.
  22. Greetings all. The first weekend home series for the Longhorns and I was able to sneak away to attend the Sat. game. Friday's contest was a close 4-3 (Texas) and the Saturday pitching matchup featured Buck Cody for the Longhorns vs. Derek Rodriguez for the Runnin' Rebels. The scoring started in the top of the first as Wisconsin's own Tyler Beranek drove in a run with a ground out to 2B. For those interested, here are a couple photos of Tyler. The first picture has him fishing for a breaking ball in the dirt and the other was before his last AB (a double play). They are here: img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/Anders34/P2120010.jpg img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/Anders34/P2120014.jpg Texas then tied the game at 1 in the 3rd with a Carson Kainer double that scored Calvin Beamon. UNLV wound up taking a 4 run lead in the 5th which started with a triple from UNLV's Zeke Zerega. This was a 'gift' ruling by the scorekeeper as this was a terribly played ball by 2006 super prospect Drew Stubbs. The ball was a line drive to the left-center gap and Stubbs first tried to catch it but realized he couldn't, so he pulled up. He then tried to play the ball to the side of his body and it skipped past him to the wall. Should have been a single and two base error. In this inning, Beranek also singled home a run, stole second but wound up stranded. Texas closed the gap some on a monster, 2-run homerun by Seth Johnston, scoring Taylor Teagarden (who had walked) making it 5-3 UNLV. UNLV tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-3. The bottom of the ninth was where things came apart for the Runnin' Rebels. Drew Stubbs lead off the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman. He advanced to second on a WP, and then scored on a Johnston single (6-4 UNLV). Taylor Teagarden stepped up and delivered a huge 2 run HR to deep left to tie the game. After two more walks and a bunt single , Chance Wheeless stepped to the plate and ended the game with a line drive single to right. Impressive comeback for the Longhorns against the very game UNLV Rebels. As for prospect watch. Buck Cody was not very impressive. There were several scouts there watching him (and others) but he struggled some with his command and did get hit hard. Taylor Teagarden continues his impressive play. He went 3-3 (also with 2 walks) with the game tying home run. If he keeps this up, I expect he will rocket up the draft charts. He has gold glove potential behind the plate and is turning into a OBP machine. Last year he had almost as may walks as strikeouts (44/46) and is now batting .438 with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts so far this year. Small sample, but last year his numbers were hurt by a slow start to the year and then hit > .300 in the Big 12 conf. Next week is Stanford so I hope to check out one of those games and their prospect laden lineup.
  23. Didn't see this posted anywhere, but Tyler Greene will be out a few weeks with a broken jaw. In an "off-field" incident.....hmmmm www.baseballamerica.com/today/news/050204greene.html
  24. This will be an interesting year in college baseball. Living in Austin, I am quite interested in watching the Longhorns and their potential pro prospects. The top 2005 pro prospect (as many of you know) for the Longhorns is Taylor Teagarden. At this point, his D is way ahead of his offense as he disappointed a little bit at the plate. Last year he batted only .273, however his OPS was .855. He had an excellent BB/K ratio (44/46) so he does have good plate disipline. He could be in store for a HUGE year! J. Brent Cox will likely take over for Huston Street as the Longhorns closer. It will be interesting to see if he has the "closer mentality" Drew Stubbs is a favorite for the top of the 2006 draft. He provides a great speed/power combination, however the plate disipline is not yet there (28/75). Combined with his excellent defense, he reminds me a lot of David Krynzel. Outside UT (but remaining in Texas) is Rice. Replacing the "big 3" + Josh Baker will be a challenge, but there are plenty of kind words for Joe Savery. It is my understanding that Rice is going to plug him right into the weekend rotation and use him as the DH. I hope to attend quite a few games this year, and will let you know what I see.
