  1. The black hole at the bottom of the lineup is white hot.
  2. Weeks' AB is one of the reasons why I love the watching via GameDay. Great pitcher/hitter matchup; Wells kept going away, Weeks kept fouling off the close pitches until he got something to hit.
  3. Don't forget as well that both of the catchers are new. While it's way too early to assign credit or blame, I think you at least have to provide the counterbalance that players like Villanueva, Hawkins, and Narveson are pitching well. Without stating the obvious, the guys who are throwing strikes are doing better than the pitchers who are getting behind in the count (Gallardo, Davis, even Hoffman). Unless Peterson is preaching for guys to fall behind the hitters early....I don't think you can put too much of the early performance on his shoulders just yet.
  4. I think I know roughly where your seats are now, as I had a view of the rail flipper from Section 213. Really, just came to echo the comments on how awful the Robert Haack sign looks in Left-center, having seen it in person. It looks like they hung up a yellow sheet of tagboard with black letter stencils glued on top....like something you'd see when a 6th grader is giving a presentation. Kind of surprised that the Brewers didn't have a bit more editorial control over the ad design, given that nothing else in the ballpark looks that bad.
  5. $40 million...and the guy couldn't drop 40 dollars on some memory foam pillows? (If only we'd given him a Craftmatic adjustable for a signing bonus, he could have won a Cy Young! I'm hoping that's at least part of the option on Yovanni's extension.)
  6. This is all conjecture, since I don't have the time (or know-how) to test these sorts of hypotheses with the available models, but I would assume that the pitcher has an intended outcome beyond simply getting the batter out (which will always be the primary goal). I think we can all point to situations where pitchers are looking to strike a batter out, or to induce a ground ball (double play). If the pitcher doesn't believe that the hitter has a liklihood of hitting the longball, and he gets himself out 60-70% of the time they put the ball in play....then your secondary goal is to just not walk them. Unless the pitcher has sufficient control to get a breaking ball across for strikes reliably, that means throwing the fastball, and leaving it for the hitter to get themselves out.
  7. Hearing Uecker run off the Hoffman-Helton career matchup numbers, I was a bit worried until the fly ball.
  8. Counsell and Gerut have made Macha's decision-making look pretty good today. (I even like that he didn't try to push Davis to the 100 pitch mark after that terrible first inning. He earned his no decision, to be sure.)
  9. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/90010092.html Markolf leaving UW basketball team, opening up a scholarship slot for next year's team. He's staying in school at UW, apparently, to focus on academics.
  10. Carlos Gomez is on pace for 162 Home Runs. (I've been waiting all day to say that; never expected he would be the guy I used that bit with.)
  11. Yesterday, I bought a new radio so I can listen to Brewers day games at work. Bring on the 162 (-plus?) that count!

That said, the problem Hart faces is that he doesn't have the track record of outstanding years to fall back on, just one very good one. Plus, when the problems are tied to pitch selection, it's hard to look at Hart's OBPs and expect him to get a lot better. (I looked up Greg Vaughn as well, but he's not that comparable to Hart....as his numbers show a more gradual improving trend, albeit with a few very down years before the trade @ age 30.) I do agree that he should get a chance at a bounceback year, but Hart is rightfully on the hot seat at this point. 13. Catchers (plural) who can hit, as well as the starting rotation.
  14. I thought I saw Creed dominating the DDR machine.
  15. I'd rather go with HAX2N0.
  16. Free idea to anyone who wants to use it: H8CUBS
  17. Lost never answers any questions. (Great episode last night.)
  18. Still the weak-spot in the Chuck-24-Castle Monday night TV schedule.
  19. Quality Starts are a recurring subject here on Brewerfan. My take: A 4.5 ERA is nothing great, but it isn't meant to be. 3 runs in 6 innings are a baseline from which performance can be measured. You hope that your starting pitcher does better than that (1 run in 6 innings, or a complete game shutout for that matter). You can make the argument about 4ER over 8 innings (also a 4.5 ERA), but you're arguing over a very minute case, and mostly missing the point of the stat. As I see it, the value in quality starts is as a measure of a starter's consistency. If you look at what % of a pitcher's starts are indeed 'quality,' you start to get a sense of how good the pitcher really is. I would gladly take a pitcher who puts up a quality start every 5th day, since I suspect they'll end up with an ERA well below 4.5 (either by giving fewer earned runs in some 6 inning outings, or pitching past the 6th inning) in the process. It doesn't mean that pitcher is going to win every time they throw a quality starts (Sheets was the veritable poster boy for Quality Start losses earlier in his career), but a pitcher who doesn't frequently put up QS's are either keeping your team from winning games, or putting additional stress on the bullpen (which generally leads to your team losing games over the course of a season). Put another way, it is the quantity of quality starts (or the lack thereof) that should draw your attention, rather than niggling over whether the 6 IP / 3 ER case is really 'quality'.
  20. Brewers get to keep the younger catcher, and add an organizational player for minor league depth....all for a player who would have been allowed to walk away. I assume that, in making this trade, Treanor will be the backup in Texas (otherwise, he would just exercise the same 'out' clause there as he would with the Brewers)....with Teagarden playing almost every day in AAA. Makes sense for all parties involved, as I see it.
  21. ...or like Cornell saw game tape of the Wisconsin-UWGB game. If someone shoots over 50% from outside the arc, the Badgers are going to struggle.
  22. Disappointing that this is going to be Hughes' last game in a Badger uniform; can't recall the last time I've seen him so out-of-sync. (Even against Illinois, he seemed to play okay...just missed his shots.) Fouls out on the perimeter on D, turnovers on offense. Dribbling the ball into the heart of the defense without much of an idea where to go when he gets there. Cornell has put on an offensive clinic against two of the top defensive teams in college basketball. The Badgers just couldn't score enough to keep pace with them.
  23. Leuer really bailed out his teammates in that last minute. Hitting the open J to get the lead, getting the stop when Wofford tried to drive past him on a mismatch, and then making the 2 FTs to make it a 4-point lead. 'Survive and Advance' remains in full effect. Go Badgers!
  24. Get that dude a White Russian. (Or should I say Z-Man, based on the chest protector?)
  25. If Mississippi State takes away one of the at-large bids by winning the SEC title game (over Kentucky), it may well come down to those two for one of the final at-large spots. I think Minnesota needs to win their way in.
