  1. Don't you think it's a little early to make changes to the everyday lineup? I mean, sure the guy didn't get a hit, but he had some decent ABs....I'm sure Overbay will do better tomorrow. Besides, I don't think Hall even has a first-baseman's mitt. Counsell walked once, put down a good sac bunt when the Brewers took the lead in the 3rd inning. In other words, out of the 5 times he went up to the plate, he got his job done twice. Not the greatest of days, but hardly cause for criticism. I'll be so bold as to say that he won't carry a .250 OBP all season. Just stop. I don't want to have to hear stuff like this for another 161 games....can't you just enjoy the win?
  2. Just to supplement the comments here, when a team signs a Class A FA, and they pick in the top half, two things happen (assuming the FA's old team offered arbitration). 1) The signing team forfeits their second round pick (or potentially lower, if they've signed more than 1 Class A FA) to the FA's former team. 2) The former team gets a supplemental first round pick (aka a "Sandwich pick").
  3. Shelmark- Sutton has talked to Franklin about his goal being keeping the team in the game; I wasn't watching the telecast today (more on that in a bit) but I remember other occasions where Sutton has relayed conversations with Wayne Franklin and how Franklin's top concern as a pitcher is whether the team wins or loses while he's on the mound. Not how many runs he gives up, but whether the team wins or loses. I was also at the game today; I sat in the RF bleachers 2 rows behind the Cinci Bullpen...Richie's fly ball at the end was caught right in front of me. (I'd tell you all to watch for me during the highlights...but none of you probably have a clue what I look like). It was nice to see them come back from a 4-run deficit, and they had a couple of chances to win the game....I just wish they'd have been able to cash at least one of them in. Regardless, not a bad way to spend the holiday.
  4. Yost has rested EY every time they've played a day game after a night game....usually with Keith Ginter. Today, it's Bill Hall instead (I'm not reading anything into it). As to why Clayton would be batting second, it's probably to protect Hall, although Royce has hit .300 over the past week.
  5. My biggest problem with having Ford in the rotation is that it seems as though he's being set up to fail, rather than to succeed? I was at yesterday's game, and before the Middle of the Second, I had told my brother that I didn't think Ford would make it out of the 5th inning. In Ford's 5 starts to date, he hasn't pitched 5 complete innings yet. If he can't pitch 5 innings, he won't be able to win a single game as a starter! (Not that the stat really matters...as long as the Brewers manage to win those games...but they're 0-5 so far.) The Brewers are taking a guy that they should be looking to build up for the future and slowly eroding his confidence. If they're going to keep Burba and Ford paired up, then start Burba, and at least give Ford the opportunity to win games. He pitched four great innings...and then ran out of steam. (Maybe I'm just a bit upset because, once again, they make a pitching change after the damage has been done.)
  6. Always good news to get a number of signings like this, but signing Tommy Hawk is very welcome news. Considering BA's projection of a 6th-8th round pick for the kid (and signable within that range), to have him sign as our 17th rounder (and sign so quickly) is a bit surprising to me. Great News! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif
  7. Just thought I'd let people know that Tony Gwynn was on the Dan Patrick Show this afternoon (missed parts of the interview due to bad reception). He was very happy about where his son was drafted (without being too disappointed that he will likely be losing one of the best players on his SD State team), as there will be less pressure in Milwaukee than there would've been in San Diego. He did say that Anthony won't be signing for cheap, although it didn't sound like Tony Sr. would be representing him (unlike Cecil Fielder last year). I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something along the lines of 'you have a number, and they have a number, and the closer those numbers get to eachother, the better; it's OK to be a little bit greedy.' Since he did an in-studio appearence (he's in Bristol for the College World Series), I can also tell you that he was wearing a Milwaukee Brewers cap. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. BA has a note on our 23rd pick: Redshirt sophomore OF Jon Mungle has the quickest bat on Mississippi State and is a plus runner. He swings and misses too much right now to be an early draft Mungle is the #24 prospect in the state of Mississippi
  9. I'll try and sneak this one in before SoCal: BA: #27 in S. California- RHP Tommy Hawk has a four-pitch repertoire and improved his stock this spring by bumping up his velocity to 93 mph. He is physically mature at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds and still projectable. Hawk, a possible sixth- to eighth-rounder and considered signable if he is drafted in that range, has committed to Cal State Fullerton.
  10. Catcher Lou Palmisano: Scouting Report: Palmisano ranks right behind Indian River JC outfielder Steve Doetsch among national juco position prospects, and he'll definitely be part of the 2003 draft mix because he's not under control. Teams have known about him for a while, and he turned down $175,000 as a 21st-round pick out of high school two years ago. He wasn't drafted in 2002 because he hurt his shoulder and required offseason surgery. He doesn't have a gun behind the plate, but he has good footwork and accuracy. He's a very athletic 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, with average speed and opposite-field power to right-center field. Palmisano was very impressive at the Florida state juco tournament and could have pushed himself into the third round. The shortage of catchers works in his favor. (From BaseballAmerica)
  11. there's even more guys that can play 2b in the bigs than power arms for bullpen fodder (which people regularly say are a dime a dozen). I've gotta say, I'm starting to come around to DHonks' line of thinking. I'd rather have an Keith Ginter (or Mark Loretta, since they're farily similar) -type at second and either Stauffer or Sleeth, than Weeks and a mediocre pitcher (I want to use Glendon Rusch as an example...but he's so bad this year that it puts a negative spin on his career numbers; Paul Wilson is a decent example of a back-of-the-rotation guy). Admittedly, I was high on Kyle Sleeth for most of the season, so that also probably factors into it, but I wouldn't be outraged if either he or Stauffer (who doesn't quite have the same projectability, but would be able to jump into the majors quickly a la Ben Sheets) were the #2 pick. Still, though, if Delmon Young is available at #2, he should be the pick (assuming work ethic doesn't run in the family). There's just something about drafting the 'hitter without a position' -type player that doesn't sit well with me (...that sort of 'how can he be so good on one side of the ball, and so not good on the other side' line of thinking); maybe it's because the last highly-touted 2b with some defensive lapses that the Brewers had didn't pan out well in Milwaukee (Ronnie Belliard ring a bell?). I can't target any one specific reason why I'm not sold on Weeks, but there are a lot of things that concern me about him. I know that Stauffer and Sleeth have some questions as well (a relatively low ceiling for Stauffer, and some mechanical flaws & a down finish this year for Sleeth), but they just don't concern me as much as Weeks does.
  12. What confuses me most about replacing a AA catcher is that the Brewers have two very good hitting catchers right now in High Desert. If the club was concerned about fan feedback in replacig Moon...don't you think that this move is a temporary one until the Brewers are ready to promote either Brian Foster or Kade Johnson? I don't follow the minors to the extent that some of the other posters on the board do, so...what are the chances that I'm just horribly mis-reading this move?
