  1. Well, our fortunes in the draft and with our DFEs have been decided, and I don't have any idea what those fortunes are. I hate that. I'm sure we'll hear about Loewen tomorrow and hopefully Mr. Rizzo will have good news for us on the Eveland front. Other than that, I guess we'll have to wait until Drew gets done with his Springsteen demos to find out about the other guys.
  2. We may not know on anyone besides Eveland until tomorrow anyway, unless the deadline is tomorrow at midnight, er, Wednesday. But I'm pretty sure it is midnight of the 27th, or in 1-2 hours. That was confusing.
  3. I am pretty sure that the deadline is eastern time, so there's about 5 hours left. At this point, I'm more worried about us not signing Eveland/Mannon/Beresford/whoever than the O's signing Loewen.
  4. I still like the idea of Loewen keeping opposing hitters from launching away on him, and eventually in Miller Park. I know you are supposed to pick the best player available, when the top guys are so close, I'd go with the pitcher. Hex on you, Angelos.
  5. Huntsville *only* had 4 errors, including two by Dave Krynzel. Super Dave made up for it with a nice night at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases (and a CS). JJ Hardy also contributed 2 hits in 3 AB, with a walk and a HR. Luis Martinez got the start, going 4 1/3, and Matt Parker got the win in relief.
  6. This name is new to me, as I saw it in the draft chat today at BA and then looked him up on the player profiles. Just curious, what round does he project to go in if he isn't signed by the Reds?
  7. Simpson associated Loewen's name with the Brewers throughout the chat, and never paired the Brewers with anyone else. If the O's don't sign him, which I just don't see happening, the only reason I can possibly see the Brewers going with someone else is that they may be scared off by Loewen's price tag. I have a very good feeling that he will be their draft pick, and we'll know in a week and a half.
  8. Yesterday, there was an "X" in front on HD Dan Kolb's name. Today it is gone. Someone somewhere changed their mind.
  9. I checked backwards in the thread and didn't see this, and I'm not sure when it happened, but according to Baseball America, Dan Kolb is no longer with the Mavericks, which might explain the Hundley signing. Not sure where he is, but he's apparently not there. Does this mean we are down to one Dan Kolb? That's sad. EDIT: Dan Kolb pitched last night, so BA just must be hating on him. Does anyone have a middle name on this guy? He needs a nickname to differentiate himself from the other one.
  10. Why isn't Moreira in Beloit? That's another strange elimination from their roster. Maybe if the Brewers drafted Weeks, Weeks could have some pull to get Greg up there. I think Moreira is very "Prior-like."
  11. I want to know if loewen is a cant miss ace of the future I want to know what the winning lottery numbers are. If he is Prior-like then yes take him and go with it, What does that mean? Anyway... www.brewerfan.net/ViewFea...PlayerId=8
  12. I just have a prediliction towards taking pitchers over hitters, in most circumstances, if they are considered equal talents. I think it is a lot tougher to find good pitching, and if you have to take chances on pitchers, go for it (to a point). Loewen doesn't really have an injury that should affect his status, while the same can not be said for Harvey, and that's why I would be Harvey in the second tier of guys to be drafted (in the 4-9 range), though he may be at the front of that list.
  13. I think Melvin's thinking is that if it comes down to two players, who are more or less equally talented, and one of them happens to project to get the majors in 2 years, and the other one 4-5 years, you take the guy who takes less time. I'm not a huge fan of Weeks, and if they pass on Loewen, I might go on a Colby-esque Kotchman rant, but none of the three guys (Weeks, Loewen, Young) that we are 90% likely to draft really stand out from each other talent-wise. Heck, Ryan Harvey isn't even a huge stretch at #2. Unless we take Stauffer or Sleeth or Sullivan or that one guy who was good for about a week, I'll be happy with the pick in the end, even if I do go through some Loewen-based angst.
  14. He appears to be pitching with no defense. This could explain where all the unearned runs came from.
  15. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Eveland resembles David Wells Maybe that's something you don't want to bring up in negotiations.
  16. Milledge falling to the second round is an interesting thought, tho I don't think it will happen. The perfect draft would be, to me anyway, Loewen in the first, Milledge in the second, and Salty in the third, and stranger things have happened, but the likelytude of that is almost nil. I just can't imagine 30+ picks going by without a guy like Lastings being taken, as long as Boras isn't his agent.
  17. Toby could probably confirm, but it seems that the DSL is considered by the Brewers to be a more advanced league. This is true. A good comparison would be High Desert vs. Beloit. The Brewers don't (or, didn't, and now may or may not) have a full team in the VSL, they've shared the team with various clubs over the years, and the team is not usually in the same city two years in a row. I think they shared the team with Boston last season, and I seem to recall the Twins being involved a couple of years ago. Thank goodness he meets our model citizen standards. I'd hate to win with guys that I'd hesitate to take home to Mom. Just curious, where would you draw the line, Al? Attempted murder?
  18. Luckily, the Stars have been able to weather the storm with JJ out, and should win the first-half West Division crown fairly easily, unless West Tennessee or Mobile start playing really well. It's nice to talk about a Brewers' team being a shoe-in for the playoffs, yah?
  19. Second or third round pick? Excellent. Screw my dream of picking up Bakker in the second round. I'm now a Saltalamacchia guy all the way because what Callis says is as good as gold. Not looking forward to the potential of having to type his name over and over, tho.
  20. It would be even more impressive if Morris could draw an OBP of over .300. Heck, even with a .350 OBP, he might be closing in on 20 SB already. Anyone else rememeber (or, no longer remember) Esix Snead?
  21. Not really a transaction per se, but a small update on Carpenter and Ballouli. Both of them are scheduled to have MRIs on their pitching shoulders today (Wednesday), and it looks like Khalid could wind up following Carpenter to the DL. Tough early season luck for both the pitchers and the Snappers. For now, it looks like Trytten and Housman will be the guys to take the rotation spots, though Jason Baker (who has missed a little time with a sore arm himself) could also be in the mix. Or, I could concentrate real hard and convince the Beloit staff through telekinesis that Bo Hall should step in. As an addendum, as I noted it in the Power 50, but I'll say here as well, Ben Hendrickson's name will probably reappear in the box score in the next 2-5 days as a relief pitcher. The Brewers have him working out of the pen for now after resting his sore elbow. He'll be on a 30ish pitch count the first time or two out, but he'll be back in the rotation fairly soon if all goes well and he is pain-free.
  22. No extra base hits in a 12 inning game? Yowsa. And how about that Jeff Housman, coming to Beloit and lighting it up after a horrendous 2002 Ogden campaign? And why isn't Bo Hall starting, for the love of baseball? In 14.2 IP, he has allowed 11 baserunners and struck out 17. It's not a stamina issue, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
  23. Bring Toby in, I've heard him now -- his voice rakes... And we all know what happened to Bill Scott. I'd have to listen to many, many tapes of Bob Uecker before I'd consider myself ready, but hey, I'm game. I have nothing else going on this summer. The chicks dig the deep, if not somewhat nasely voice. "Get up, get up, get out of here! Er, shhhhhhbang. Er.... crap."
  24. Again, no slight to the High Desert pitching staff, but the talent gap that exists there seems to get bigger and bigger every week. Has anyone else just stared at the staff ERAs there and been completely boggled? I don't remember it being quite this bad last season, and the sample sizes aren't getting any smaller. I yearn for the day when it is not every other club in the system that has a solid staff. It is going to be a challenge for Saenz, Hall, Stavros , Schaub, et al, to form a solid staff there, and I hope they rise to that challenge eventually, for High Desert's sake. Clark and Johnson aren't going to be there all season.
  25. He pushed RIch Paz off the Power 50 for about 3 hours, that jerk.
