  1. I'd love for Marquette to go after VCU 's head coach Anthony Grant. He runs a similiar style and he may be able to improve this team on the defensive end. I don't think he is the sexiest choice, but in the long run he would make a great fit.
  2. Too call him bad in the clutch I think is inaccurate ,because I think for every game that he has made poor decisions, there has been one where he has made excellent ones. Defensivly, he isn't in Flowers league, but all in all he is a pretty good defender. Overall, I think its more accurate to label him as inconsistent at this point of his collegian career. As far as this team going farther than the Badgers I truly believe they will. The strength of schedule I believe is the reason why these two our so far apart in the rankings. The Badgers play an extremly weak one while Marquette night in and night out is challenged pretty hard. The education they recieved from their tougher schedule and the combination of strong veteran guard play in the end is what I see making the Golden Eagles go farther in March than the Badgers.
  3. All of my previous post state that I think he is a top tier pointguard that is critized too harshly, because many people don't like his flamboyant attitude. Maybe you got one of my posts confused with one of the other forum members, because I think he is a great asset to Golden Eagle basketball. Overall, he will be the one of the main reason why Marquette goes farther than the Badgers in March.
  4. The attitude on this board towards James is pretty negative and not exactly flattering. Whether he is or isn't like this I really don't know. (Wisconsin vs Marquette thread) What I was trying to saying with the model citizen comment is James never has been one of those give credit to the team, don't trash-talk, and don't taunt player guys. I actually like some of his antics, because I think he's just overcompensating for the beating he takes night in and night out.
  5. Good post! That is exactly what I was trying to reason. I can't stand TO or Kobe Bryant, but that doesn't mean I think they are bad players. James is a good player, and probably one of the top 10-15 pointguards in the country, however he is far from a model citizen.
  6. To say James coming back might not be a good thing is just completly dumb. If you believe that you obviously don't watch the games, in fact you probably just skim a couple sportcenter highlights and think you have an informed opinion. James hasn't gotten worse over the last two years, it is just that people don't like his personality, so they keep pointing out the flaws in his game.
  7. Well then if were gonna use that small of a sample size to determine a players status, I'd say James is a future hall of famer, because of the way he played the last two minutes at Notre Dame. I'm sick of people who call out James just because he is rough around the edges. He is a great pointguard who won't be drafted high, but will have success in the NBA. He may not shoot well, but his court vision is pretty hard to match at the college level. Overall, I'd take him over Hughes any day of the week!
  8. No, thats why I think we should keep him. He's a young arm that has a lot of upside, plus him hitting Albert was blown way out of proportion. He put up decent numbers last year, and I think he will surprise people in 08. I'm hoping Melvin and Yost decide to leave him a spot.
  9. We can't trade Gabe, otherwise who would play QB when the mustangs come back to town?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. Duensing is a fairly decent prospect, he went 15-6 last year between AA and AAA with a 3.07 Era. He is the Twins #8 prospect acording to BA (pre-Santana trade), and he started the Gold medal winning game in the IBAF World Cup. From what I've heard he doesn't over power hitters and probably projects as a middle of the rotation guy. I don't think he will be a star, but if there is one thing that Twins organization can do, it is develop pitchers.
  11. I completly agree that you can never have enough pitching depth, but I'm a believer in quality over quanity. I really don't see any of these guys they just acquired being front line starters, and I really don't like the approach of seeing if players will "stick" in the big leagues. I guess what I was trying to say was the Twins have a lot of future #3's and #4's, and I don't see this trade changing any of that. However, I guess your viewpoint + the twins success of developing these pitchers is justifaction for reconsideration on my part.
  12. My problem with this trade from the Twin's prospective is they already have a surplus of pitching depth on the minor league level. Robertson, Blackburn, Duensing, Manship ,and many others talented pitchers are within the organization. A package of Ellsbury, Lowrie, and Bowden I think would have served the organization better, because it'd strengthen up their weaknesses. Although, I feel for the Twins fans, I am pumped for the the high draft pick hopefully coming to Beloit in 09.
  13. I am willing to put money down that if Prince continues to have the career he's been having selling at $400 would be a huge mistake. Now if your contemplating selling today or a year from now that's a different story, but my strong reccomendation is to hold on to it. If bobbleheads maintain their popularity (it will be quite some time down the road), the price for early/rare bobbleheads will skyrocket similiar but not quite as much as vintage baseball cards. There may be some risk to holding on to it, but I believe the benefits down the road far outway the chance of it dropping!
  14. No doubt we would, but that is still a little light on our part. If bowden was a normal re-building GM he would demand some good prospects or cheap major league talent, so Vargas or Turnbow wouldn't work. It'd probably take something like Parra/Gamel or Escobar/and maybe another mid-level prospect to get a deal done. From my point of view this move wouldn't be worth it, because I believe LaPorta is not that far away from taking one of our corner spots. I really think people need to be patient and realize that outfield of Hart, Braun, and LaPorta will be very productive in the near future, but I can understand the win now mentality
  15. Sorry, but those flat out wouldn't happen. If he asked for Weeks in the Cordero deal, he'd ask for either him, LaPorta, or some other stud. Kearns would have been a great addition, but the fact that Bowden is completly outrageous to work with really hinders any deal we do with Washington.
  16. Yeah, the talent thats gonna be there is amazing. I doubt I'll ever see a class as top strong as the one I saw my first year following the midwest league (2006: Upton, Maybin,Bruce,Rasmus), but its gonna be very difficult for a future midwest league class to surpass the depth of this one. For example, Clinton's team could boost anywhere from 5-7 serious prospects, and the 3 top high schoolers taken in the last draft will be there. Overall, I plan on making at least a dozen trips to Beloit in order to see all these players! Beloit is probably my favorite place to watch a game, because quite frankly the game/atmosphere is so much better there! Just curious, Colby do you think Neftali Feliz and Engel Beltre will play there for Clinton? Because, if they are that will make one heck of a team
  17. Yeah, I'm still waiting for my feet to unthaw. BHF and I got there at around 1:30 and were in the middle of the pack for the first signing, and surprisingly not too many people stayed for the second so we were able to get them. I got Braun on a photo (no personilization), Weeks on a mini-helmet, Gallardo on a Baseball America magazine (they look sweet), Hardy and Hart on rookie cards, and Torres + Riske on those stupid snowflake pictures they handed out. Overall, extremly well run, and I hope they use this event as a model for future autograph signings!
  18. What are you talking about -- Dalton had 4 losing seasons in 14 years -- Melvin has had 3 in 5. Dalton turned a 95 loss team into a 93 win team. The year after Dalton left, the Brewers won 90+ games. Dalton took the Brewers to the WS, and is credited with one of the best trades in the history of baseball -- Dalton was a very talented GM. First of all, I think Dalton was a good GM. Second of all,I hope you know that Melvin didn't come here on day 1 to build a winner right then and there. Doug Melvin's goal isn"t that 25 years from now this organization will be celebrating its second great world series loss, but that we will have some actual longevity in winning which will hopefully include multiple playoff runs and a world series or two. The 1978 Brewers had the leagues highest payroll? Lary Sorsenson pulling down the huge bank? No but in Dalton's most succesful year 1982 according to a special report on FSN the two highest payrolls in baseball were the Royals and Brewers. (Scary) No -- he wasn't a psychic in Texas either. I didn't realize though GM's needed supernatural powers to put together a pitching staff. Ultimately though this is no excuse. He should have contacted Dionne Warwick or Uri Gellar. Actually he did have an excuse. Coming out of Spring Training many people projected us as having one of the strongest rotations in the national league. It is unrealistic of a fan to expect Doug Melvin to know that his #2 starter would lose something like 20 consecutive decisions, and that two of the best mid-relievers in baseball from july on would decide that they forgot how to pitch. If this team would have had the Matt Wise of the past 2 years there is no doubt in my mind we win the division! He could have watched Turnbow pitch in 2006 to figure this out. So is he just supposed to ignore his 2005 season? Cordero bounced back fromthe same exact problems Turnbow had in 06, and Melvin had no reason to believe Turnbow couldn't do the same. I hope so. If he doesn't get it done in 2008 I think it is time to cut him lose. Just so you know that if they fired Melvin today and they won the world series in 2008 it would still be his team, because he assembled most of the pieces. I know I know Jack Z drafted most them, but it took a coy GM to realize Jack Z was a heck of a scout and not just simply dump him for one of his "own guys"
  19. No, I haven't, but the friend that I mention is Billy Hall Fan so he could have said something. I do not however think the trade was for Wise like many people believed, but I don't exactly think it was for 3 blue-chip prospects either. My jaw dropped when I heard this, because theres not a lot owners out there that will share stuff like that. (Gives me a reason to love Mark even more). I think Melvin is a lot mpre agressive than people give him credit it for, and I think that agressiveness will be reflected on the moves he makes in the upcoming off-season
  20. Are you seriously gonna say Dalton's a better GM, because he rebuilt a losing atmosphere? Melvin needed more time than Dalton, because unlike Dalton he didn't have the leagues highest payroll at the time. Yeah, our pitching staff stank, but Melvin is not a psychic. How was he supposed to know that Wise and Turnbow would be non-existant in the 2nd half? Or that of his starters only one would pitch 200 innings? Yeah I know he should have seen Ben Sheets going on the DL again, but were kind of stuck with him as our proverbial ace. I hate to break it to a lot of people but Ben Sheets being injury prone isn't Milwaukee's little secret, so anyPhilip Hughes/Joba Chamberlain fantasies proposed this off-season need to be thrown out the window. Finally, Melvin was very aggresive at the deadline but he came up short in sweepstakes for Eric Gagne (didn't want to come here) and Adam Dunn. Speaking of Dunn , I have an interesting story about him. My friend and I were at the Pfister the final week the Padres were in town, and we ran into Mark A. We congratulated him on a great season, and told him we were looking forward to next year, and right about when he was leaving my friend asked him to try and get Adam Dunn this off-season. I laughed, but then Mark A said they had a deal done for him at the deadline all they need was basically a physical, but then the reds pulled out at the last minute because they were scared we would pick up his option! To get back on point Doug Melvin is going to be very agressive addressing needs this off-season, and will have this team right where they need to be in 2008
  21. Fatter than Joey I hope your firing Melvin idea was supposed to be in blue because that is absolutly dumb. Wanting Melvin fired makes me question whether this is the only season you've ever watched. Do you remember Sal Bando and Dean Taylor when all we literally had was just a bullpen. I understand your upset that we didn't make the playoffs, but firing Melvin sometime next year would be a irrational emotional based decision(ex. Red Sox's putting Manny on waivers after they blew-up against New York, could have been a horrific loss). Wanting Yost gone is wrong, but understandable. If you'd have watched the post-season his quote on quote inexcusable mistakes have been made by almost every manager in the postseason, and sometimes successfully I might add. Wanting Melvin gone is totally the wrong call, and could really once again put this organization a step in the wrong direction!
  22. Just a question when do we expect to know the details of next years coaching staff? I really don't want Sveum back, I'd rather have someone like Ken Macha who has MLB head coaching experience. However, I do not want someone who is gonna force Ned to look over his shoulder every step of the way.
  23. Exactly! Unless you wanted to throw Cordero and Linebrink a crazy amount this season yost had no choice to throw Turnbow when he was struggling, Wise after he hit Lopez, or Spurling in any pressure situation. However, I will say the two times he used Aquino in the 9th were dumb, but not worth his job!
  24. I honestly feel Ned's only problem with the pitching staff is when he gave someone in that bullpen an opportunity to step up they failed him. Look at Bud Black last night for the padres he went with 3-4 different pitchers in a tie game before he went to Hoffman. No one once questioned him after the game about why he didn't summon the all time saves leaders earlier why? they produced! Matt Wise, Derrick Turnbow, and Greg Aquino chocked in pressure situations for the team. Ned got way too much credit when this team was 24-10 and he's getting way too much blame now that they missed out on the playoffs. Ned Yost is a good manager and unless we really fall back next year he should be our manager for quite some time!
