  1. Most players peak somewhere between 27 and 29 and then post 4-5 pretty steady years of production. I would expect Lee to put up pretty much the same numbers as this year for a few years. Hart and Cruz could come up and fail miserably. I just don't really see the need to go with a rookie. If we get a good offer for Jenkins or Lee I can see trading them, but it really does have to be a solid offer that plugs a hole elsewhere.
  2. Um, he's not hiding it, they've clearly stated that Rickie's thumb is hurt. The diagnosis was that he couldn't hurt it any worse by playing, thats not hiding it. If you look Weeks up on any sports site you'll see dozens of references to his thumb so I don't see why you won't believe its hurt. An example from foxsports webpage including a quote from Yost... ''If it was a problem, he wouldn't be playing,'' Yost said. ''It's not anything that affects his play. Does it take a little bit away from his hand strength? Maybe. But not to the point where he can't do his job.'' He'll likely have offseason surgery to fix the problem. (Wed. Sep 7, 2005)
  3. Last I heard the opinion was he'd need surgery in the off season but he couldn't hurt the thumb anymore by playing so he's playing. The difference between us being in the wild card chase and fighting for 1 game over .500 has been fundamentals. Clark does a poor job hitting the cutoff man, overbay/miller can't catch the popup, weeks picked off, clark failed bunt, our generaly lack of situational hitting.... we've lost so many games this way this year its not even funny.
  4. Did hardy get hurt or did they just take him out because we have such a big lead?
  5. I don't know, Overbay has batted 3rd and 5th all year behind some decent hitters. Tracy has batted 2nd and 6th or 7th behind some pretty bad hitters. I don't believe in RISP stats at all, I think they are completely meaningless, so I still don't think Overbay is more valuable simply because he happened to hit HR's when guys are on more often. On the other hand, OPS is hardly the defining stat on how good a player is, its a general guideline at best.
  6. Smoltz has over a 4 ERA on the month, I think he's starting to wear down... which means he'll throw a shutout against us for sure.
  7. On June 14th Pettitte had an ERA of 3.76. He went on a complete tear and dropped that ERA to 2.58 over his next 9 starts. In his last 3 starts he's back to a 3.27 ERA. He is more beatable than his stats suggest, Pettitte is probably a 3.40-3.50 ERA guy who just had one incredibly hot streak considering his past numbers in his career in the AL. Of course he's also a lefty and we generally don't do too well against those so good luck!
  8. Um no, the majority of that streakiness of Jenkins was in 2001 when he was injured off and on. Look at his AB by month that year... 89, 46, 85, 62, 12, 82... Face it, they are both streaky guys. Other than 2002 when he was very consistant Lee has been a very streaky guy his entire career.
  9. Lee's month by month OPS... 2001 - 830, 896, 877, 868, 651, 655 2002 - 703, 771, 933, 844, 770, 1112 2003 - 839, 823, 726, 884, 870, 859 2004 - 816, 752, 820, 1134, 961, 934 2005 - 647, 977, 1051, 711, 734 How you can look at those numbers and say Lee isn't extremely streaky is beyond me. Jenkins is a harder read since he was hurt 2 of the past 4 years. 2001 - 1101, 817, 679, 543, 828 was hurt a bunch in there so erratic AB 2002 - 751, 736, 837 - very consistant then hurt 2003 - 939,. 763, 1027, 746, 1160 2004 - 851, 672, 749, 712, 867, 937, 944 2005 - 699, 738, 790, 1112, 1012 How you can look at those two numbers and say one is streakier than the other is beyond me, other than maybe Lee's 2003 they are both all over the place. When you talk about Lee's hitting you have to conclude that he is a streaky hitter, there is no other conclusion. This year by far Lee has been streakier than Jenkins though.
  10. Lee is the streakiest hitter on the team most likely, if you look at his career its always held true. Hopefully he goes on a hot streak soon but its to be expected with him.
  11. If Dunn were given Bonds' strike zone he'd be an absolute monster and wouldn't K very much. Instead he has the rep as a K guy so he never gets the benefit of the doubt on calls. Sure thats oversimplifying it and I'm sure he does swing for the fences more than normal players... but having watched both of these players a good amount, anything even close to being a ball for Bonds is a ball, anything remotely close to a strike for Dunn is a strike.
  12. Pettitte won't keep up what he's doing, Oswalts complaining about his arm and their offense is terrible. Pythagorean records are pretty shaky and that includes their hot streak, looking at the parts of that team its a .500 team who went on an amazing run. They played .500 ball before the streak and are playing .500 ball after the streak.
  13. Only reason Houston is over .500 is one big winning streak and everyone seems to think they will win it all, even though they are the 4th or 5th best team still in the hunt. All it takes is that one big streak apparently.
  14. Shrug, Houston had an amazing streak where they won 13 of 14 games, other than that they have been a .500 team all year and have been a .500 team since. They are a .500 team in talent. There is no reason we can't split with them. The Astros team is no better than the Cubs, they have 2.5 good pitchers and a mediocre offense.
  15. The way our bullpen has been pitching lately I have 0 problem with Sheets batting in that situation. The way Sheets hits which is almost always a weak ground ball to an infielder, I have absolutely no problem with him bunting. Magruder being on the team, there is no excuse for this, its cost us at least 2-3 games on the year because he is just terrible. We need a real 4th OF.
  16. The only thing i can think of is he wants to save them for later in the game when he can double switch. This seems like such an important AB that I'd have gone with someone else though.
  17. If this inning makes it to Santos do you think Ned will pinch hit for him? Bullpen is relatively rested and he obviously is struggling.
  18. Its simple, the Cardinals are very well coached, don't make a lot of mistakes, play sound defense and have great pitching. Its pretty rare to see them make mental mistakes costing them games. If you managed to cut the brewers mental mistakes in half we'd be where Houston is right now.
  19. Actually 3B has been our most productive spot in the lineup this year compared to league averages. Our 3B beat out all but I believe two 3B in the NL with the stats they have combined for. We don't really NEED to upgrade there, I'd love to see Branyan every day and I wouldn't mind seeing Hall every day at 3B.
  20. Every manager in baseball leaves his guy out there in the situation davis was in. Why on earth do you think you see lines of 3 IP, 7 ER so often. I'm not Yost's biggest fan but at least half the stuff people criticize him for are things that every manager in baseball does.
  21. Jenkins hit .296 on the season in 2003, so I find this hard to believe.
  22. Younts career as a SS isn't any better than Jeter's, so I don't really see the problem. in fact from an offensive standpoint Jeter blows him away, can't comment too much on defense as I haven't watched Jeter that much.
  23. If you really want to blame someone, blame Hall. The inning should have been over before Piazza even batted.
