  1. I guess we just have really different opinions on Suppan... I think he's a #4 starter on most teams and a #5 starter on some teams. The price tag is just way too high. I'd rather have Doug Davis back and by the end of the year I'm going to guess I'd rather have Vargas. I'm guessing those that have a higher opinion of him but a lot more stock in ERA which I consider a mostly useless stat, it can even make Russ Ortiz look good if you put him in the right situation, even though his secondary numbers always stunk.
  2. The last 3 years he's had WHIPs of 1.37, 1.38, 1.45 and K's of 110, 114, 104, those are not good numbers. His FIP's have been 4.65, 4.48, 4.68 and his xFIP's have been even worse. The only good thing about him the past 3 years has been his GB% and if we end up with Koskie hurt and Graffy or Braun starting at 3B we have a pertty poor fielding IF. I stand by what I said, signing him for good money would be a disaster.
  3. I really don't see Nix being on the team. We have a lot of 'depth' in the OF but its mostly 4th OF type depth. The real problem is having Gross and Jenkins both on the roster. They both should be starting vs righties and sitting vs lefties, there is 1 OF spot for them and really only 1 roster spot for them. I don't see how you trade Gross making minimum so I hope they find someone to take Jenkins.
  4. please, please, please go somewhere else Suppan. We really do not need a low K, 1.40 WHIP type pitcher who has only had a decent ERA the past few years because STL has had the best defense in the NL. Suppan would be a disaster signing in my opinion, I'd have more faith in Vargas than in Suppan.
  5. Marquis is a bad pitcher, he had decent ERA's a couple of years because the best defense in baseball was behind him and he got a bit of luck. I'm very happy that we didn't get him.
  6. I'm not a big Lieber fan, but after researching his stats he might not be terrible. He's had an elevated HR rate but that was to be expected in that park he was in. His strand rate has also been terrible which usually suggests the bullpen let him down a lot.
  7. I dunno, Gonzalez still walks too many and has injury questions. Laroche had a .915 OPS last year. Big question with Laroche is whether he's going to be able to take that next step against lefties and become a true stud 1B or not.
  8. ZiPs are terrible, especially for pitching, they are nowhere near the best system. Also keep in mind projection systems always hedge their bets, thats why the playtime is always low for everyone.
  9. He's a younger better fielding version of Soriano/Lee. I'd have no big problem with taking a chance on him.
  10. Well in my opinion Zito is going to be a bust for whomever signs him for sure. Soriano is going to be a bust as well. Lee is going to be one of the biggest FA busts in baseball this year. Yeah Schmidt is a bit riskier which is why people are offering a 3 year contract, but he's the real deal so if he does stay healthy he'll be the best of the bunch over those 3 years. To put it another way, if Zito joined our team I'd be wondering who our 3rd best pitcher is, Zito or Bush. If Schmidt joined it I'd be wondering who are best pitcher is, Sheets or Schmidt.
  11. Schmidt is the best FA in the league this year so considering how much guys like Mathews and Pierre are getting I'd say this seems appropriate. I'd rather sign him than Zito or Lee or Soriano, so it doesnt' really bother me.
  12. If giving the Brewers an even playing field means making the game as boring as the NFL has become in the last 10 years then I'll stick with what we got now. They do need to work on revenue sharing a bit more, especially doing something about the bottom 3 or 4 teams and the top 3 or 4 teams. As for the original question, a lot of FA's get overpayed every year. Its as simple as that. Spending big moneyr on a FA who wants a long contract and is most likely in his decline phase is the type of deal clubs regret in the long run. I would have no problems paying a Travis Hafner type guy(assuming he could play a lick of defense of course) the type of money that Soriano got because he'd be worth it. Soriano most likley is not worth it.
  13. Keep in mind Beltre is one of the better defensive 3B in baseball. I recently read an article by tango that showed that his value is as high as Aramis's when you take into acount that ramirez is a terrible baserunner and terrible defensively. Then again Jenkins is underrated too since people ignore the fact that he's actually a good baserunner and a good fielder.
  14. Alou is actually kind of interesting if we can move Jenkins, though I'm not really keen on making our defense worse than it already is and Alou is most certainly a step down from Jenkins in the field.
  15. Pierre is likely to cost more. Pierre's OBP is likely to be much worse. FLA and COL are both good parks for hitting for AVG and as soon as Pierre left them his plummetted. Roberts generally is a better basestealer as well. I just think Roberts is as good or better of a player than Pierre and will ask for less money. Do I want Roberts on the team, dunno, depends on what we can do with Jenkins and whether or not we are going to waste Hall at LF.
  16. You may not be able to just ignore bad starts but anyone that thinks a pitcher is going to get better moving from the any division in baseball to the AL east is deluding themselves. All of those pitchers are better than they appear on paper because of the teams they have to face. Kind of like how NL west pitchers always look better than they really are recently since its been a really weak division.
  17. I think he's an interesting guy, he was supposed to have great stuff and has shown flashes of pitching very well but hasn't shown consistant production. He's one of those guys I could see turning into a good MR or something. As a pure salary dump type move he'd make sense to take a shot on, Jenkins, Mench, Clark type guys.
  18. Mediocre fielding, weak armed, no power hitting CF's who don't get on base much and get caught stealing too much just don't excite me, sorry. Not to mention the fact that Pierre's numbers were inflated by playing in two very good average parks in Col and Fla so I expect last year to be what you expect out of him which is just bleh. He's a number 7 or 8 hitter on most teams, maybe a 9th hitter in the AL to have that 'leadoff hitter' at the bottom of the order.
  19. Well 74-87 may not be the record I was hoping for, but I do think it shows the Brewers were not a fluke last year, this team certainly has the talent of a .500 team and with some improvement by the young guys, hopefully a key FA or two and a bit better luck we could find ourselves in the playoff hunt next year. Fewer blown saves by the closers, fewer guys underproducing compared to their career stats, fewer injuries and this is easily a .500+ team, just gotta hope it all comes together next year.
  20. Yeah, my first thought was I hope they give him a vacation for the rest of the season because of that post. Posts like that are the kind that make me not want to visit the site.
  21. He was fine in July too. Only a .795 OPS but it was OBP heavy which generally counts for more than SLG. So thats 3 months he was fine or good and 3 months where he sucked. Most players have 1 or 2 bad months a season, jenkins just overachieved and had 3.
  22. I think the most meaningful stat to look at with Jenkins is the .430 OPS vs lefties. While its lower than I'd expect out of him because of a small sample size I think its pretty clear at this point that he should be platooned at least when he's not on a hot streak. He actually has like an .850 OPS vs righties on the year now. If you really want to talk about them being meaningless then I hope they trade Hall next year since he's obviously given up on the season and just doesn't care and we don't want that attitude on the team. Thankfully I don't believe the games are meaningless so I'd like to keep Hall, they especially aren't meaningless to STL who still hasn't clinched the division and has various home field advantage scenarios on the line.
  23. .770 OPS on the year for Jenkins. Couple more HR's and he'll be sitting right in that .800-.830 OPS range you expect from him.
  24. I'll never understand why our pitchers are just so bad on the road this year. Its been just terrible all year long.
  25. Yeah, I was not able to get in using www.brewerfan.net but when I did a google search for the forum I was able to get into the forums directly.
