did linebrink trade handcuff brewers this offseason?

Inmann was terrible in Double A last year... had a mid 4 era when he was with the Brewers Farm... and had an over 5 Era when with the Pads Farm... A guy who was a top 100 ranking at the start of 2007 last year(ranked in the 30s) dropped out of the top 100 this year.... Double A is where you see if a pitcher is likely to make it or not... and Inman does not have great Stuff and is a guy that gets by with Command and sontroll..but that starts hurting you the higher you go in the system... Garrison was always a decent pitcher... at the time of the trade he was not even in the top 20 of our own org in Prospect rankings.... and Joe thatcher is 27 year old BP guy..NOT a prospect...and was undrafted We will get better players than those guys with the 2 draft picks we picked up The trade was basically Will Inman(3rd rounder), Steve garrison(10th rounder), and Joe Thatcher(Undrafted) for Scott Linebrink(half season), 1st round sandwich pick, White Sox 2nd round pick Inmann and Garrison are both 20 years old.... they were blocked by better pitchers....as soon as Manny Parra showed he was healthy that made Inman very much expendable. -
To me if you wanted just defense then Miguel Olivo or that dude from Colorado....I forget his name at the moment..... both did very well defensively behind the plate.... but I think Kendall got brought in because of his 2nd half in the NL.....270Ba/ .350OBP.....and because he is great at working WITH the pitchers.......

Yeah all you can eat food... I am sure I could scarf down enough to make that 70 bucks WELL worth it...lol

But what you're describing here is completely different from why Braun or LaPorta or Fielder are mentioned as 1B ideas... Pujols is & was a very good fielder, and is one of the few examples iirc of a guy being shifted to 1B not due to being a poor fielder. But Laporta is and was a very good fielder at Firstbase as well... he is being moved because Firstbase is blocked so a Move back over to first for him is not a DH type move...its because he would be he is no longer blocked at first after shipping fielder off... Braun would be a move because he is a bad fielder over to first...but that Move would make him a PLUS fielder... it would not be like having Ortiz or Dimiti Young playing First...he would be just as good as Overbay was at first...IMO

Capplean was signed by the Rockies a month or so ago.... and wasnt Henderickson traded to the Royals...for a Catcher....or was that the JDLR

The thing is you tend to always start out young pitchers in the Pen to limit their work loads and their innings.... look at what the Dodgers did with Billingsly and the yanks are going to be doing with Joba to start off this year again.... That was the plan with Yovanni Gallardo after Cappy got back from injury.... use him in the Pen until probably August... then have him start the final month and a half or so... not having to worry about inning restrictions. That all changed when Sheets went down. The Thing is with CV... he does not have the stuff that our other pitchers did..... so the Bullpen was the option for him... Vargas has better stuff than CV...well at least a better Fastball...and I think his breaking ball is better to... Bush is #3 or so Ceiling guy... and while he does not have an overpowering Fastball tops out at 91... he does have decent other pitches and has excellent k/bb rate So what did you want to see happen..... this year I think CV should get his shot in the rotation along with Cappy... and Parra should be in triple A...just to limit his innings and strenghten his arm... I want him to be able to come up around the Break and give us another great SP option to go along with Sheets and Yo...

yeah I believe its any game....but you probably should hurry on that one...because I am assuming after Opening day that last game might be the next popular one to pick...

Apparently the Cubs Were a Lock for the WS
erbacaine04 replied to MillerParkSouth's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Yeah and now Steve Stone says that the Cubs should walk away with the Divison... I used to like what the old fart had to say.... In fact I remember listening to him last year Before Braun and YO came up and he was singing their prasies and said that they would both be a force in 2007...... -
sorry about that--i had to reread to realize you were talking about both pitchers after each other. capellan was still considered- at least by the braves and brewers- to be a high potential guy. and maybe he should have stayed a sterter. Oh yeah and I had high hopes for him when we were able to pawn off the one year wonder Kolb for him...he was moved to BP because we had better options in the rotation at the time.... Mike Jones, Manny Parra, Henderickson, JDLR....and a few others I cant think of right now.... but I saw him as our Closer for the 2007 season back when we traded for him. and saddly he got lazy and estrada-esque and back talked and bad mouthed people.... so good riddence......
-
Glavine and Maddux had plus pitches besides just a change up.....and while they did not have the Fastball they had more than a so-so or average breaking ball.... and then still had wicked control....it can happen.... but CV and his "stuff" make him a #5 starter which is what I said to start this thread..... and which is what I am defending...

I dont think Cappllean was ever considered a cant miss Starter.....he was always thought of as a Future closer.... he did not start at all until last year when the Brewers finally stretched him out in Triple A...... now Jorge Dela Rosa he was suppsoe to be that really good Starter with #2 potential... Now with CV you guys are basing this Ceiling projection on 12 total starts..... he never did much in the minors... in fact as of 2 years ago at this time he was not even in the top 30 in the Brewers Org.... 6 good starts in 2007 does not mean anything.... It just means that teams have not seen enough of him yet... cappllean was a cant miss starter in the braves organization--we traded kolb for him. and cv has the stats in minors. we'll see I know who we traded for him....and at the time he was not even in the top 100 prospect list.... He made the list in 2005 in the Brewers System... ranked 25th and he was NEVER thought of as a starter in the Brewers system.....Below is a report on CV 2 years ago... when he was not ranked in the top 30 for the Brewers Org....I think that assesment is dead on even for today.... He needs to be PERFECT in his placement or else he will be hit hard and getting all "wet" over 12 ML starts..6 last year is setting you up for dissapointment. The Fact is he has to have great placement and in 6 starts when people are facing a unkown pitcher you can get away with bad placement....but I just dont see how you can say he has a ceiling as a #3 starter......I like CV..but I am being realistic on his talent level Carlos Villanueva, rhp, Brewers Born: Nov. 28, 1983. B-T: B-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 190. Signed: Dominican Republic, 2002. Signed by: Rick Ragazzo (Giants). The Brewers flipped Wayne Franklin and Leo Estrella to the Giants in spring training 2004 in exchange for Villanueva and Glenn Woolard. While Woolard had a solid run in 2004, Villanueva emerged as the better prospect with a dominating 2005 season in the high Class A Florida State League. He led the FSL with a 2.32 ERA and the Milwaukee system with 138 strikeouts, but he didn't do it with overwhelming stuff. He'll have to maintain fine command to continue his success at higher levels. Villanueva uses his fastball well, throwing strikes with it and generally keeping it down in the strike zone. His fastball velocity varies, at times sitting at a fringe-average 88-90 mph and at other times dropping to 84-88. His curveball and slider are just so-so pitches with little to differentiate them other than velocity, but he generally commands them well. His changeup makes him a prospect. It's a plus pitch that he has a real feel for, and he'll throw it any time in the count, allowing him to pitch backwards and making his other pitches more effective. Villanueva got hit hard after a promotion to Double-A Huntsville, in part because his conditioning is mediocre and he ran out of gas. He doesn't have much margin for error, but Villanueva has a chance to be a back-of-the-rotation starter. He'll open 2006 back in Double-A. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/features/06030331stteam.html

No there is no advantage really.... if they add the Opening day Ticket into the Season Ticket packages then more Season Tickets get purchased.... I am surprised they went with the Opening day Ticket in the 9 game package.... They should have done 20 games and up....kept it at that... and then done the group sales.... as well.. thus forcing more people to pony up with the 20 game packages instead of a bunch of 9 game packages..and then having to end the opening day ticket in that package and the opening day ticket in the 20 game package as well...(I think they ended the Opening day ticket in the 20 game package this past Friday).....had they not done all the 9 game packages with opening day tickets they could have sold more of the 20 pack with opening day tickets......but who knows I have my tickets.... and my Tickets to Fenway... and to the Season opener at Wrigley s o thats all I care about.... I have done the Axel's Bar cruise on opening day..... it was alright....

What will happen a lot of times is in the 8th rounds or the latter rounds.....then the big clubs will talk to the guy they drafted... and he might have been hurt... might be a HS kid with some Raw talent.... so the Big club will go way outside of the slotting to make sure he is Signed and not able to go back into the draft the next season.... Like when the Brewers drafted Hunter Pence... in the Late late rounds.. a few years ago... lets say the Brewers offered him 800K bonus to sign....(I am just guessing at what the deal was that he almost sgned with the Brewers)...but if this was the Yankess or Red Sox then they would Double the Signing bonus of whatever the top signing bonus in that round was...and offer it to their draftee... and then they take it..... alot of times these same kids if they dont sign will go to college or go back to college and be first round picks the next year or 2 years later.... Look at the red Sox drafted Matt laporta in 2006 in the 13th round I believe(he was injured and fell all that way)....ended up not signing and going back to college and became a first round pick... Honestly though I think the teams should just go after best avail...and screw the demands.... this is the one time that every team is actually on equal footing against the Big Market teams....and yet small market teams still pass on the Best prospects at times because of the Price..... Sorry I was wrong it was Weiters.... most thought of him as the #2 pick.... with Price going 1..... and some thought He would drop out of the top 10 becase Boras was his agent.....Balt took him at 5...so not much of a drop... but had Balt not picked him there was a real chance of him dropping then.. Here is an example....most thought he would be a top 10 pick..... 30 30 NYY Andrew Brackman rhp North Carolina State NC As an awkward 6-foot-7 16-year-old at Cincinnati's Moeller High, Brackman wasn't considered a top 50 prospect in baseball or basketball. His basketball game blossomed as a senior, and when N.C. State offered him a chance to play both sports, he eagerly accepted. A bout with tendinitis assured he wouldn't be drafted highly enough out of high school to buy him out of college, and after giving up basketball as a sophomore (he had thrown just 77 innings in his first two years at N.C. State), he's begun to come into this own. Now a legitimate 6-foot-10, 240 pounds, his upside is considerable. His athleticism helps him repeat his delivery, but he struggles with his balance and release point, leading to erratic command, especially of his secondary stuff. He touched 99 mph in the Cape Cod League in 2006 and again during an early-season outing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and he pitches at 94 with exceptional plane. His mid-80s spike-curveball is filthy. Brackman's changeup was the pitch that had improved the most this spring, and grades as a third potential plus offering. He's still unrefined, but even without the polish, Brackman shouldn't slide out of the top 10 picks.

That is going a bit too far. I don't expect CV to be much better than a #3 or #4 but the average #5 is a 5+ ERA. I do not think that is CV's ceiling at all. CV is a steal... given how he is pitching, I think he's a #3 starter. By this time next year, Suppan's the fifth starter. by this time next year I hope to see Suppan on another team.....his no trade clause ends after the season....if he has a decent year then some team would be willing to trade some prospects for him...even at 12 million for 2009 and 2010

Well it is real...because in the 2007 Draft there were some teams ahead of the Cubs that were thinking of drafting Vitters....but because of signability he fell to the Cubs who had no problems with signability even though they took until the deadline to sign him.... It really is all about making smart picks still.... but the thing is there are some guys rated as TOP 20 prospects who drop to the middle of the 2nd round because of cost and signability problems.....I am not saying its the only reason why teams like these have been able to restock quickly.....but teams like the Brewers and Reds and Pirates have not gone with the safer more expensive prospects, but have reached more...and taken kids that were HAPPy to be drafted in that spot...... Fielder was considered a big reach at the time.... Laporta was considered a reach as well(some felt end of 1st round pick).....I think Mark rogers was even considered to be a slight risk pick as well....even though most people felt he had the best stuff in the draft... they felt Hughes and Bailey were "safer" but more expensive picks...

Sheets - Type A Free Agent?
erbacaine04 replied to MillerParkSouth's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Yeah my mistake on that... and its based on 2 seasons of work....that above list is based on stats from 2006 and 2007......... When Sheets is a Free Agent its based on his 2007 and 2008 stats....So Sheets actually just missed being a Type A free Agent....this last period and thats with only 17 Starts in 2006...and 24 in 2007...if he can keep the ERA around the same as this year 3.82...and start 30 games... then he would be a TYPE A.....I think pretty easily.. -
Sheets - Type A Free Agent?
erbacaine04 replied to MillerParkSouth's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Oh and looks like Andy Petit and Tom Glavine were both Type A free agents this past period...... So I think they get rated on stats and Innings pitched...... Here is how Elias does their ranking for Type A and B players http://www.sportscity.com/MLB/Type-A-Type-B-MLB-Free-Agent-Rankings-Explanation/ -
Sheets - Type A Free Agent?

This is from the 2006-2007 season.... I guess they rate everyone that qualifies....and in the 2006-2007 season Sheets rated as a type B....Bush rated as a type B..Doug Davis was a Type A http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/2007-10-31-elias-rankings-complete_N.htm -

Sheets - Type A Free Agent?
erbacaine04 replied to MillerParkSouth's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
If he makes 28 starts this season and keeps his ERA around what a 3.50 then he will be a Type A..... Just like if Gagne saves 30+ games for the Crew this year then he is a Type A as well...he actually just missed Type A status this past year....it also depends on what Starters are Free Agents.... if Sheets is in the TOP 20% of the Free Agent SPers than he would be a Type A.... With Santana no longer being a Free Agent after the 2008 season...then thats one less top notch Free Agent.... Gagne may have a tougher time getting Type A status because KROD and Nathan are both Free Agent Closers...... Turnbow could actually end up being a Type A Rp like Linebrink was....I think this is his last year under contract... The Problem is I think we still need Sheets.... Sheets and Gallardo gives a nice 1-2 punch that not many teams can beat.....and would be huge in the playoffs.... if he gets hurt then he becomes much cheaper and can resign him cheaper....or just let him go for a sandwich pick....
