  1. Rock; I think you and I are on the same page, but different paragraphs. However, I would not tie up any salary in Davis or Washburn (what an appropriate name!), even if they are are only options. Instead, start Narveson and wait for the trade deadline. Use the money to extend our position players.
  2. I do not like any of the free agents. Lackey will cost too much for too long. Harden is okay for a year, but any longer than that and we will regret it. Sheets is, well, Sheets. Wolf will cost alot for a little better than average pitcher. Bedard seems to be an injury prone weinie. Washburn and Davis are garbage (like Suppan and Looper). The best way to improve is to trade. I think Halladay is unlikely but not impossible. That means Gamel and Hart. Possibly Parra. And others. That being said, Atlanta is the most likely trade partner for Lowe or Vazquez.
  3. Yes Davis's stats are better, but he is the same type or class of pitcher as Looper and Suppan: oldish, weak stuff, nibblers, possible 10 win and usually 14 loss pitchers. Best asset: they eat innings. Davis is a little wilder and much more deliberate. Possibly more of an injury risk. None of these guys are good pitchers. Waste of money to sign any of them. We are already stuck with Suppan. We will not win with two of them starting. Besides, we already have Bush, who is only slightly better because he throws strikes and is younger. Need a number one or two to go with Gallardo. Bush is a four. Suppan is a five or six. Davis does not fill the other opening. Neither does Washburn. (I forgot about Parra, who is the default number three. Unless we trade him with Gamel, Hart and others to get Halladay!)
  4. Cannot stand Davis (as a pitcher. Very nice man, however). Davis is as bad as Suppan and Looper. Trade for Vazquez. Sign Harden or Sheets. Do not sign Davis or Washburn.
  5. Patterson comment is hilarious!
  6. This discussion has gone astray from the original topic; Gomez. I think by the end of next year, we will be pleased with him. From watching him with the Twinkies, I think his problem is not that he lacks talent, it is that he lacks experience. He seems to be somewhat of a free spirit, sometimes prone to boneheaded plays. If handled correctly he could become something like Devon White. If handled poorly, Chuckie Carr.
  7. Fielder is here for two years. Gamel is not Ryan Howard, who was hitting 35 home runs a year at AAA before the Phillies traded Thome. You think Gamel could be a similarly adequate replacement for Fielder? I do not. I like Gamel, but to get good pitching, we need to trade him at his highest value; right now.
  8. Decree is that he will not play in RF. Mcgehee is the starter at 3B. AAA is an option, but seems to be a waste. He needs to play in the bigs this year, or we need to trade him while he is at peak value.
  9. Yes give up Gamel and Hart. Gamel does not have a spot, unless we trade Fielder. That would be huge mistake. Hart is just an average RF, but some fish might bite on his supposed speed-power potential while disregarding his looping swiss cheese swing. Maybe the Blue Jays would be interested with those two and a handful of others for Halladay. Just don't sign Washburn and Davis and try to tell us that is an improvement.
  10. Enough value shopping. Go and get a solid number 2.
  11. Phillies ain't trading Hamels. However, the Braves will trade Vazquez, as they extened Tim Hudson for 3 more years. Now is the time to make an offer the Braves cannot refuse....Gamel and Hart and some pitching for Vazquez. Bring up Lawrie and put him in right.
  12. I like Hardy's defense, but watching Escobar in the field was a revelation; he has crazy range! And Gomez is an adequate replacement for a guy we would not likely have signed. (Why spend 10 million on a fading 37 year old CF on a team that lacks pitching?) If this manuevering allows us to add a number 2 starter, then it is a good trade. Doug Davis and J. Washburn are not good enough. Sign Harden and trade for Harang. Or, sign Harden and trade Gamel and arms for Vazquez.
  13. They misused Gamel last year by getting him so few AB's when he was up. Of course, McGahee was on fire and getting most of playing time. In hindsight, they should have sent him down. Next year, they should start him or trade him. I would like to see him in RF.
  14. Gamel will be traded for pitching. If Hart had trade value, I would trade him for pitching, but he ain't got none. (See Jeremy Hermida.) Would be cool to see both and Salome and a basket full of pitching prospects to the Jays for Halladay.
  15. Cheez...Knock it off with the WAR stuff, already! Who cares what Hardy fluked out two years ago. He sucked bad last year. Three years ago everyone was worried he was injury prone. WAR? We more than replaced Cameron's defense (which I always thought was slightly overrated), and add big speed and some potential. Cameron was not going to get better. In fact, most players his age rapidly decline. WAR? Replace Cameron's nominally worthless homers with a starter that can pitch. That will give us 10 WAR over Narveson, Suppan, kerosene crew rotation we had last year. Worst ERA in the NL!!!!
  16. This trade gives us better D up the middle: Escobar has much more range than Hardy, and Gomez has more range than Cameron. We can add another pitcher with the freed cash. Most are thinking free agent pitcher, but I think it is more likely this trade means Gamel will be dished for an expensive pitcher. Even though Hardy will do well in Minnesota; possibly star, he had little current value. And there are not any, cheap center fielders available. The only thing that does not fit is Macha; he needs to run Escobar and Gomez.
  17. Keep McGehee I think they will let Lopez go. Does not make sense to keep Lopez and Weeks. If they offer arby to Lopez, Weeks becomes trade fodder unless he moves to center or RF, which he will whine about. I dig McGehee in the back-up corner role against lefties (2b, 3B, inter-DH, 3 starts at first), again getting 300 AB's.
  18. Nonsense? They have to do what is best for the team, ie., what will win the most games when it counts. That means getting Escobar ready for next year. I like JJ, but if you watch Escobar, he is the real deal. He runs like a gazelle and has much more range than JJ. I was there last night and saw him make at least 2 plays that JJ could only dream about. The extra year of team control is a plus because it gives JJ slightly more trade value than a .230 hitting, limited range, SS. with one year left... (merged consecutive posts --1992)
  19. I noticed the whining has stopped. This means that either people realized that vegetarianism has no relationship to hitting ability, or, he is eating meat and the morons think that there is a relationship between meat-eating and hitting prowess.
  20. Most of the stuff I've seen indicates that Green is a mediocre prospect. Smallish, maybe injury prone, some power, decent to good in the field, third baseman. A weaker hitting Jeff Cirillo.
  21. We will not get a good pitcher for McGehee or Hart. (Because of his low OBP and long swing, Hart has developed into a solidly mediocre player.) It is apparent that Escobar is our shortstop next year. JJ in a package deal might bring a three or four starter type. The question is who the Brews could get for Gamel. Alone, he is not worth a one or two starter. So you trade one of our best prospects for a three starter? Why not keep him on the cheap and see if he develops into a star? Bottom line, nobody is going to trade a top line starter for what we have to offer.
  22. I agree. But when you look through these boards, Abreu is referred to as the type of player we should have signed in the offseason. However, an Abreu type is only useful as the last piece of the puzzle, after we have the pitching staff in place. But to spend on pitching, we need to save money on position players. Escobar, Gamel, Weeks, McGeehee, and Hart are relatively cheap AND TALENTED. Trading them leaves gaps that have to be filled with bad players or expensive players. (Or bad, expensive players.)
  23. Okay, I'll play; what kind of pitching will we get for Gamel? Nobody outstanding, just question mark, Andrew Miller types. Why trade Gamel when we can sign those guys as free agents, or trade Hardy and Hart. We can keep Gamel and sign the Abreu types. Green is a marginal prospect.
