  1. Good trade. Ford and Hammond weren't going anywhere. Durham is a lefty bat off the bench that can PH, spot start, and hit a few dings. (Going to a smaller park.) And he makes better contact than Branyan. Good fit for what we needed.
  2. When I was complaining on a different thread about Branyan, none of you Branyan lovers put up the fielding numbers for Branyan and Hall (although you were real quick with their OPS). In consecutive innings today, I saw Branyan: 1) make a decent pickup, but then stumble around like a drunk at Summerfest before making a weak throw to first, which missed the double play; 2) meekly wave at a candy hop grounder that went into left for a hit (after which Shouse gave up a two run double and Yost was forced to bring in Torres for the final out). I think Hall would have made both plays. I know it was only two plays ("too small a sample"), but those plays are representative of Branyan's weakness in the field. Whaddya say?
  3. dnnn......dnnn. Dnnnn.....DNNNN. DNNN..DNNN.DNNN.DNNN.DNNN. The music from Jaws. That's what they should play over the Wrigley sound system. The Cubs have the toughest remaining schedule (just like the Brewers did last year). They are nervous. That said, I think an injury will determine the outcome. Gotta admit, the Brewers look GRRRR-eat. (Tony the Tiger commenting on Frosted Flakes.
  4. Hitting is as advertised. But his fielding has been mediocre. Good range; but three awful game-killing errors.
  5. Moved and merged into the Home Run Derby thread, beginning here. --1992
  6. Glad we don't have Hamilton in the division for the next ten years! As good as Volquez is, his career will probably be alot shorter....
  7. RLuzinski, I agree with you about Weeks taking pitches. I can't tell if he takes too many or if he takes the wrong ones. I would like to see him swing earlier in the count rather than waiter for the 2-2 or 3-2 slider, which he has not hit this year. And why does he hit so many pitches off the end of the bat? He has such a quick swing; should he be using a bigger bat? The consensus is that Kapler should not lead off, but what about Cameron? He whiffs alot, but if he took more pitches, he might hit more and walk more. He has the speed to lead off.
  8. CC was awesome! How refreshing to see a Brewer pitcher get better as the game goes on! (Sheets also does, I guess.) It may be overstated, but you can feel the energy and confidence increase when he is pitching.
  9. So their numbers are the same against righthanders. (I assume that Hall is better against lefties.) What about their fielding and baserunning? If Hall is already just as good in the field, doesn't it make sense that he will be better in the field after 60 more games?
  10. Cheez, How many ways can I say it: Branyan is not the answer at third. If you want a .220 average with a strikeout every other at bat, limited speed on the base paths, infrequent bursts of power, and mediocre range in the field, then he is your man. What is overlooked is that Hall can hit righthanders as well as lefthanders with power, run the basepaths well, and field the position well. Branyan is a bench player who can spot start at third. It pains me to see him start regularly. It will cost us games. I am not arguing numbers, I am arguing what I see when I watch the games.
  11. You are right that Kapler should not start every day, but when Ned uses him, he has good patience, makes good contact, and has good speed. I must admit I am miffed at Cameron's miscues in CF. I did not expect him to make another blunder like the one in Arizona, but he made two more awful errors this week.
  12. Bernman, Exactly! And Mr. Thecrew07, it ain't flawed logic. Hall is a more complete ballplayer; better hitter, better baserunner, better fielder. And when was all this time he has played at third? Must have been in the minors? I remember him filling in at third for stretches in the past, but I'd be surprised if he has more than 162 games at third. As for Branyan, he's played his whole career there and is maybe an average fielder. You guys are too hard on Hall and Weeks; they have the potential to continue to improve in the field. I'm not saying they will be GG's, but they can be very solid. And those that complain about Hardy's fielding are nuts! The guy is a very good fielding SS. Prince is the only one that really concerns me in the field; he's gotta improve his fielding of throws.
  13. Should Ned be thinking about leading off Kapler and moving Weeks to seventh in the order? This also means some pine-time for Cameron.
  14. Nate is correct. I saw the play you are talking about: Hall made a tough pickup and had a long throw that one hopped Prince. Prince should have made the play. Very tough error for Hall. I'm sure the stats will say otherwise, but it seems to me that Hall gets to more balls than Branyan. Bottom line is that Hall can help us win by starting at third and Branyan can help us win by pinch hitting. We still need another lefty bat.
  15. The ninth inning today is an excellent example of why Hall is a better offensive player than BranyAn in all aspects except raw power. Not all outs are the same, putting the ball in play matters, and a home run is a home run, no matter how far you hit it.
  16. Dusty and Loopy; Overuse; Too many sliders and imperfect mechanics.
  17. I haven't seen Bill boot any routine plays recently. He had a stretch early on that fans will not let go. In contrast, late in the game last night Branyon made a feeble matador attempt on a hard hit ball that he should have at least knocked down. Play went for a double and later a run.
  18. Half a season; 81 games. What I was getting at is that he is new to the position and has the skills to improve. Branyon will not improve in the field or at the plate. Brnayon is a good power lefty off the bench. Not all outs are the same. For example, you can move a runner by hitting behind the runner or flying out deep to right. I would rather see Branyon do that than K, but he ain't gonna.
  19. Gagne, Mota and Riske's failures have caused Yost to foolishly over-rely on Shouse, especially in the eighth. I have less of a problem with using Shouse as a Loogy or a 6th or 7th inning guy. Can only blame Yost so far; look at what he has to work with! We need another power arm, and they are costly commodities.
  20. Branyon had his month of glory; he ain't getting hot again. The rest of his career indicates that the hot streak was a fluke. Yes, he will hit a few home runs, but he strikes out in half his plate appearances (Half!) and his range in the field is limited. I think Billy is the better bet down the stretch. He is starting to hit, and the more he plays, the better he will be in the field. How many games has he played there? Probably less than half a season total.
  21. With Branyan returning to his no-contact form, the lack of a lefty off the bench is becoming a big weakness. Time to make a move. I would like to see the Brewers get rid of Dillon or Mota and bring up Brad Nelson. Maybe he can provide the little bit of pop that Counsell and Gwynn cannot give us. Dillon doesn't add anything; he isn't hitting and he is limited in the field (for the doubters; if he was a good fielder, you'd see him as a defensive replacement late in games). The way I look at it, Counsell and Hall are adequate backups second (and third). If they DFA Mota or Gagne, they could also promote a young arm like Pena. These moves make more sense than giving up a prospect for some other teams version of Branyan.
  22. I like Weeks, but he is not Brandon Phillips. Weeks shows an amazing ability to avoid contact, which will limit him in developing his hitting potential. He reminds me more of Corey Patterson; Though they have different swings, they have great speed and power potential, but just cannot put it all together.
  23. He should already be on the bench in the bigs.
  24. 1) Brewers win the wildcard. 2) Billy re-establishes himself at third. 3) Melvin trades Bush, Pena, and PTBNL to Pads for Maddux and Trevor Hoffman.
  25. Branyon is a joke at third. And now that he has reverted to form at the plate, it's bench time. At least Billy can field the position.
