  1. I think that some bandwagon fans may indeed be jumping ship, but there have already been 2+ million tickets sold. I'm guessing most of those folks that bought tickets will go ahead and use them. I've said before that this season was probably going to be the best chance the Brewers would have at making a championship run for the near future, and this is a serious blow. It's probably true that Gallardo is only a few wins better than Bush, but a few wins could be the deciding margin this season. A playoff run without Yo becomes much harder. Let's hope his young body recuperates quickly and he can come back to give a playoff push in September.
  2. "that won't change the fact that the dude can't hit a big league curveball to save his life." That's not really a fact. People who can't hit curveballs don't slug .478 over 2000 PAs.
  3. I am surprised that Bush was the one sent down. I thought Stetter or Parra were more likely options. Actually, I was wondering if they would send Stetter down, and have Parra replace Stetter as a 2nd lefty that is more than a LOOGY. As others have said, it does make sense to keep all their starters in their roles so that anyone is ready to step in should there be another injury.
  4. In my experience with some other magazines, the date on the magazine is the day that it's supposed to be taken off the newsstand. Someone who has specific knowledge of Sporting News would have a better answer.
  5. Here is the link to the Prince piece: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=403098 Article says it was posted Aprill 22nd, so it may be off the stands already.
  6. The only other thing I can think of is that the catch was clearly in the field of play, but Jeter's momentum was such that he had to choose between crashing into the wall or doing he what he did, jumping over it. I don't remember any discussion of this in the game at all, but maybe the rule doesn't apply if there is a gap of some kind between catching the ball and then going out of play.
  7. What point is FTJ making that I am missing? He keeps talking about the Brewers being short for 15 days. That's not the scenario. I'm not saying that being shorthanded hasn't hurt us. Of course it has. The relevant question is whether an extra Sheets start makes up for it. I think it does.
  8. That's not the choice the Brewers are facing, so I don't know why you keep bringing it up.
  9. "In this case Sheets has already missed one start, so if he would have been put on the DL Apr. 19th, he would have only missed 2 starts (he wouldn't pitched on the 23rd in either case). Given the Brewers SP depth, I certainly would have given up 2 strarts by Sheets, than to be hamstrung on the bench for 15 days" I don't understand what you are saying here. If Sheets starts on Tuesday, the Brewers will have been short for 9 days. You think 9 PH ABs is worth more than one Sheets start?
  10. Nobody thinks that the Brewers should baby Sheets so that he can sign a big contract with another team next season. I think they should keep Sheets healthy so that he will be available to the Brewers later this season.
  11. Here is a link to mlb.com that has a few recaps of that game: http://www.mlb.com/news/wrap.jsp?ymd=20040701&content_id=786018&vkey=wrapup2004&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb There were two outs in the inning when he made the catch, and I didn't see a mention of the rule, or any controversy over it.
  12. "Looking at his career statistics, I think it's pretty easy to disagree with that, and disagree with him even being on the roster to start the season. " I agree that his past is not exciting. But I trust Melvins opinion on Seth's future over my own. If he thinks that Seth has a future with the team, his future value will make up for the last week or so.
  13. As I pointed out earlier, the Brewers have used Seth McClung exactly one time since April 17th. That's a ten-day span. I think one of the other 13 pitchers could have handled that one inning, and just think of how much an extra bench player could have helped us during that timespan. I'm quite certain the options, flexibility, and potential production provided by an extra bench guy would have far exceeded McClung's contribution of one inning pitched. Clearly the Brewers like McClung's future, and they weren't willing to release him so that they could have a position player for a few ABs. I can't disagree with that.
  14. "Some situations are more likely to fail than others. Agreed? Counsell vs a LHP is very likely to fail, so, as the poster pointed out, it wasn't surprising to see him fail there. A RH batter would have been less likely to fail there. Continually pointing out that most at-bats don't produce a "positive result" doesn't really change the fact that some situations are statistically less likely to fail than others. Doesn't it make sense that the Brewers would want to consitently give themselves the *best* chance to succeed? Or should they just say "most at-bats fail, so it doesn't really matter who we send out there..." Why would you ask me if I agree with something I already agreed with? It would have been no surprise to see Dillon fail in that situation, just as it was no surprise to see that Counsell failed there. This is obviously less than optimal roster contstuction. Nobody disuptes that. But with the situation the Brewers are currently in, I'm not going to fault the Brewers for having 14 pitchers. We've had to use all of them, and right now it looks like we will get the start out of Sheets that we would have missed if he were put on the DL. I personally think that one more Sheets start is much more valuable than a handful of AB spread over a few games.
  15. I'm not disputing anything you are saying. What I thought was silly was saying that Counsell got an out, Surprise! You could say the same thing about most at bats.
  16. The question that the thread title asks is if the short bench cost the Brewers. In this particular game it didn't, and criticizing one at-bat, when most at-bats don't have a positive outcome, seems silly to me.
  17. Here's a list of players that I expect would sign multi-year deals that are near league average or better this offseason: Oliver Perez, CC Sabathia, Randy Wolf, AJ Burnett, Jon Garland, John Lackey, Derek Lowe, Brad Penny, Ben Sheets. That's actually a bit more than I expected. The other important factor is how many teams would be looking to spend money this offseason. I'm not up for trying to figure that out right now.

  19. Every hitter not named Bulked Up Barry Bonds fails most of the time at the plate.
  20. That's probably true, but how many of those will be available next year? And once the best guys are gone, some teams may still be interested in upgrading their team. Without looking, I'll guess that Suppan would be an upgrade to the majority of major league rosters.
  21. The other thing I find comical (well, mostly sad actually) is that while the Brewers are carrying FOURTEEN pitchers, Ned lets their 22-year-old stud prospect, fresh off the DL, throw 120 pitches. You make it sound like it was his first start after coming back from injury. Gallardo had already stretched out in AAA. He was great.
  22. " told you to chill because I wasn't necessary singling you out." I still don't understand what you are saying.
  23. "I told you to chill because I wasn't necessary singling you out." That doesn't make any sense.
  24. Look at how you are posting, and think back to you telling me to chill. All I said was that you weren't objective. You care so much about this that you choose to make it your tag line. That's not objective. Why is that offensive to you? Why are you defensive about Sheets? Why would you think that I think that you hate Ben Sheets? It's clear that you are frustrated about Sheets being hurt. Every Brewer fan is.
  25. I didn't say you were wrong. I said you weren't objective. Those are different things.
