  1. If they bring Taylor Green up, I hope he doesn't just ride the pine to back up 3B and 2B. I'd rather McGehee did that and Taylor start. He's been hitting pretty well in AAA this year.
  2. If only Nyjer wasn't hurt so much this year! I keep having dreams of 1. Nyjer, 2. Rickie, 3. Braun, 4. Fielder, 5. Hart/McGehee, 6. Hart/McGehee... then scraps... although with Lucroy being relatively consistant since coming back maybe he shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Betancourt anymore... This also eliminates 2 problems. 1. Having Gomez's bat and questionable baserunning instincts in the lineup. 2. Having Kotsay playing at all. If you are going to have Gomez play, bat him at the end. If you are going to play Kotsay - play him at a very easy position, I suppose RF is all you can really use him at right now, and also bat him at the bottom of the order. Why is this difficult?
  3. Don't you think this thread is getting a little nitpicky? As TLB said, I don't think the majority, if any, of the rosters in the MLB could say they have enough depth where if the right person got hurt, it wouldn't significantly hamper them. If they could, than those "depth" players would already be starting for another team. Bench players are bench players for a reason... they generally aren't good enough to start for an extended period of time.
  4. Bruce... that actually might make sense. At least to a layman like me.
  5. I don't think anyone on here "hates" McGehee. Were we all big Lyle Overbay haters when Fielder was coming up in the system? No. If Overbay was kept around for seasons when Fielder was clearly ready, we would have all been saying the same things...
  6. Never. Math is not my friend. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif [(21 - 17) + 39] - 40 = 3 Since it's only addition and subtraction the order doesn't matter... so you could somply write: 21 - 17 + 39 - 40 = 3
  7. GAME05 - are you Ken Macha in disguise?
  8. I'm pretty amazed at how many Brewers' fans are so against "unproven" prospects like Gamel. Players like him are the only way this team has any chance to compete... Bringing in aging veterans is a losing proposition. I really wanted to see Gamel stick at 3B because I think he has the tools to be a plus defender with good offense there. However, I think, given the state of the team, that he'll end up at RF with Hart at 1B. Then maybe Lawrie to 3B in a year... trade McGehee while his value is high(ish).
  9. I basically agree with that whole post bruce. The Brewers have already been working out Lawrie at 3B also, so my guess is that's where his next position will lie. McGehee's value is relatively high right now, and we know he isn't going to get any better. I still think re-signing Prince is a pipe dream. If he turned down 5/100, why would he agree to 8/100? I agree that he's friends with Rickie... but come on. That's probably what it will take to get Rickie at this point. 2B really don't make all that much... 7.5 per is probably reasonable - especially considering his injury history.
  10. Yeah, like I said... I didn't see it. But just watching that video it seemed pretty quick. I originally thought he was just mad at himself for not swinging. Prince slams his bat all the time when he's mad at himself.
  11. Braun has been immensely bad this season on defense... I think in part because of our position in the division. As has been noted, he doesn't even appear to be running hard this season. Fielder should be gone next season if we hope to get anything from him. I would like to see Hart take his place at 1B. Hart has played there before and could be a huge upgrade at 1B. His height makes him ideal for the position. Gamel in RF could very easily be better than Hart has been. McGehee is not a great 3B, but he might even be moved soon enough to make room for Lawrie, who could easily be better on D than him. We know Cain is a good CF and should only improve. We know Escobar has the tools to be a great SS, and should also improve. Weeks has been improving his whole career. Plus, with the pitching we'll have coming through the system and assuming we get at least one decent pitcher in the Fielder trade, we could have a passable rotation next year as well. I guess I just don't see us as far from contending as you do. Maybe it's my fan colored glasses... but I definitely like to look on the positive side.
  12. That's pretty ridiculous. Tossing Dickerson seemed incredibly un-called for. And tossing a fan for heckling? I guess we can't see what he is saying on there... but I didn't think the umpires would ever consider tossing a fan.
  13. Yeah, having the most anything in the history of a sport means nothing; it's only when they reach a "milestone" that it turns into something.
  14. OK, I wasn't watching... can someone please explain to me how the umpire can toss a fan out of the game?
  15. Logan, do you see the talent on the Reds as vastly superior to that of the Brewers? I think with the right additions to the rotation, and a little luck the Brewers could contend for the division, and hence, the playoffs. Anything can happen if you have a moderately talented team; especially since our defense and pitching should both improve next season. I think that'll make a bigger difference than most realize.
  16. I agree, Hart has played 1B before and has already demonstrated that he's below average in RF. Gamel has already said adjusting to 1B has been hard for him, so Hart would probably be better there than him; and Gamel could be better than Hart in RF. It seems like this should be an easy decision.
  17. Thanks for bring us back to reality Cheez. I agree with pretty much everything in that post.
  18. I agree with Baldkin & Ennder. I think a lot of you are confusing bad pitching with our bad defense. This year Yovani has silenced critics in my opinion. He has proven that he can be a true ace. As our defense improves over the next few years (hopefully) his numbers will improve with it - including him going deeper into games.
  19. The real loser in this whole thing is Tommy John, because we're obviously calling it "Strasburg Surgery" from now on.
  20. Don't forget that Hawkins was supposed to be one of those mid 90's relievers too. Yeah, he might have been older, but even at the end of last year he was throwing gas.
  21. Until Ruth, i don't think the HR was really valued as much as it is today. It's just so hard for me to comprehend this line of thinking. I guess I'm at least relatively young on this board... but doesn't it come across as common sense that the best thing you can do as a hitter is hit a homerun? I mean, you score, everyone on base scores, etc... how could that possibly not be valued? I just don't understand this...
  22. Don't you think for Manny, if it really is his flat fastball that is making him so bad (so what happened in 2008?)... couldn't it be something as simple as having him throw a 2-seam instead of the 4-seam he's been throwing this season. I remember in the minors he could throw both... It's pretty simple to know why he has gotten this many chances... he can throw mid 90's as a lefty and has all of the following pitches: 4-seam fastball, 2-seam fastball, splitter, change, curve, and slider (and didn't he also have a cutter? I thought at one time or another he could throw 4 different fastballs for strikes). Pretty hard to give up on someone like that - especially after his "rookie" year of 2008.
  23. Agreed with the last 2 posters. I think we all thought Braun would be a really good LF because of his excellent athletic ability. Unfortunately we were all proven wrong fairly early in his first year in LF. But still we thought he could become a good LF. This just never happened. I still think he has the tools to become a decent LF, but he is nowhere near good right now. Hart is pretty much in the same boat. We all knew Hart was fast, and a good athlete, so we figured he would be a good RF. He has shown a couple times that he can do it. But he's had even more time than Braun now, and still hasn't become the OF we thought he could be. He is average-to-below average at best. I think there's been maybe a handful of people on here critical of Gomez's defense this year - but the rest of us still know/think he is a phenominal defensive CF. He's just so bad at getting on base that we can't have that black hole in the lineup.
  24. So are we just saying best baseball player of all time, or are we considering the time he played too. Because one has to think that baseball has just gotten more and more talented year-after-year (as with any sport). So if we're just saying best of all time, and no considering era, than most likely players in the last decade or two are probably MUCH better than the older players were. If you throw the Pujols of now in Ruth's era, I would think he would just completely and utterly destroy those players. His only downfall in the comparison is he can't pitch.
  25. But Axeford didn't enter Axford* I'm not a huge fan of AW either, but anyone can make a simple mistake. I just plain don't like his writing.
