  1. WSCR has a baseball show every Saturday morning. Last week the reporter who is on said the Cubs had 55 million to spend if I recall correctly. I don't know how the contracts break down by year but so far 26 for Lester, 13 for Montero and 10 for Hamell - corrections welcome. The rumor about them wanting Gomes is probably nonsense, but it would be great if that were the finishing touch. I think as a GM I would prefer Liriano for 3/39 and not just because of the contract.
  2. I don't think he could play 1st. That's quite a group the Cards are considering.
  3. Prices are higher at the trade deadline. Gallardo at least will get a QO. Only one team will win a championship. Are there any teams that won't have a FA moving on after the season? Which ones shouldn't trade their FAs for whatever they can get?
  4. Last season .217/.265/.319 versus LH pitching.
  5. Morton is coming off his 2nd surgery on the same hip labrum. Burnett is old enough to have grandchildren. Taillon is coming off TJ which isn't as automatic as has been thought. Locke seems like he'll either pitch like an ace for stretches or look like a 6th starter. Worley was really good last season. I had heard the name, but knew almost nothing about the guy. I wonder what he is this season. It does seem cheap for Liriano. After the years with the Twins, I'm getting pretty sick of the guy. With a nasty slider and a nice changeup I go into games hoping he's off his game because if he's on - bah.
  6. I have no idea and you could be completely correct, but when I was tooling around a couple Red Sox sites, they had the exact opposite opinion - that there is very little incentive to trade him. To them he is cheap, a premium hitter and they don't seem troubled by his injuries. And of course the Brewers have nothing to offer them.
  7. Regarding 3B, I got the sense that the FO liked "Lucho" by how often he was mentioned and the tinge of excitement Melvin would have in interviews and now McCalvy even tweeted how excited they are. I don't know if he's all that and the proverbial bag of chips, but I think he's pretty close to a lock for a roster spot. He is supposed to be a great glove from a few A's fan site reviews of him I looked at. If my mention-o-meter isn't busted or out of alignment, I don't think Rogers will make the team. If he OPSs less than 1.200 in ST I think the best he can hope for is a pat on the back and "we'll call if we need you." The division... I don't know the name of the Reds owner, but fans call him "Banana Bob." I think Jocketty is telling him with his best Scotty of Star Trek imitation "I don't know how long she'll hold together." The Cards could be hurt by age. Pirates lost a ton, maybe they can shuffle in replacements. Cubs could be a freight train. I hope they sign Lester to a huge contract. What I hope they don't do is decide to flip players again and tank. Maybe that's a lot of my biases and optimism.
  8. I don't think they'll suck, but what about the following season or after that? Somejarsof will likely be gone, LaRoche will be a year older, they'll have a mondo expensive bullpen and doom may strike and Don Cooper retires. I guess then they could go all A's on it and flip Abreu and some of their pitchers. How good were the prospects they gave up?
  9. I'm not all that well informed, but doesn't Ranaudo project to be a BOR starter or reliever? Do you see Jungmann as worse than that? He's got a great GB/FB ratio while maintaining a near K per inning. Cecchini would be a nice get. Craig spent about a YEAR on the DL with an injury that can be career ending for athletes. He's cheap if he hits like his best years or he could be just like lighting 20 some million dollars on fire.
  10. What's so unfortunate is that the whole subject is so supercharged that much of what happened can't even be discussed. It sounded almost as if he was using it as a stimulant when he got caught and it was a "cocktail" of multiple things. That is certainly outside the popular notion of its use as an aid in building muscle mass. What was in there? What were the effects? I have a vague memory of Bosch saying something about another 80 names last time he was in the news. The cynic in me thinks that the whole prolonged negative drama might lead MLB to just bury that. PEDs or not the guy is a really talented and unique hitter. He's not big. I can see where using a long, heavy bat with his swing could lead to a lot of torso problems.
  11. Endy Chavez is going to be 37 next opening day. He is a former Montreal Expo though and it would would continue the tradition of guys spending the first year of their retirement here.
  12. Then there's no sense in keeping guys like Peralta and Lucroy in the hope you'll have a super season where they might still be around. That would be wasting a huge amount of value. You probably should have some sort of conversation with Ramirez and maybe void his contract and let him walk away if the team is going Astros/Cubs. Prices are higher at the trade deadline anyway.
  13. Davis has a very weak arm, but his defense otherwise was surprisingly good. He didn't have a huge LH/RH split in the minors although a bit of a different profile. In the majors he seemed like he was pressing a lot and change-ups may prove to be kryptonite. I wouldn't call his numbers horrible though. Platooning 3 positions - now that makes no sense to me. Maybe Logan Schafer is a AAAA player or maybe he just couldn't overcome the Roenicke treatment - rare and inconsistent at bats. I'd guess he'd do better than his MLB slash line to date and that could make him about what Parra is. It also depends on how far off they think Kyle Wren is.
  14. There were a few teams supposedly interested including the Giants and the A's. I don't think he'll be as big a steal as Aoki and it would probably take a more substantial bid, but it would be fun. I think its reasonable to believe that Segura will hit better than Segura's season long 2014 slash line.
  15. Is there anyone besides me who has been positive about Gomez? I like Herrera too. Its probably not worth much but the vibe I get (or as I read the tea leaves), RR loves Herrera and Melvin likes Gomez and I don't have any idea if either dislikes the other player. I think every interview I've heard with Melvin where SS comes up, he mentions Gomez, Rivera and Arcia by name or level and the statement starts with "we like." I'd guess that Herrera is the BU MI when the season starts though.
  16. Am I remembering incorrectly or was it rumored that Melvin asked for Beckham when he was shopping Prince and Williams said no? Sorry for the tangent.
  17. 2013 - 2.69 and just as shiny FIP, 6.78 K/9, 1.87 BB/9 and .23 HR/9, no pronounced splits and a lot of ground balls. Having a reliever who gets a lot of GB is a positive when you want the ball put in play. If there are pitchers like that available on the market, they'll cost more than the Brewers are likely to pay. With Kintzler's checkered health history, I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut loose in ST. Bringing up Jungmann seems like a bad idea in multiple ways. I don't know if either Hellweg or Pena will be healthy in Spring, but barring a remarkable ST, they wouldn't be brought up. If Blazek and/or Goforth are deemed major league ready, I don't think Kintzler will keep them down although Melvin does like to have as many relievers as possible stashed and stored. I'd be surprised to see Goforth no matter what happens with Kintzler. The bullpen seems worthy of a thread. The FO has a challenge with the AAA team moving to Colorado and its effect on pitching.
  18. My mistake - distracted posting. If they wanted Jordan, they probably should have drafted him. I'd guess he'll get 6 years at something like 20 million/year.
  19. Zimmerman has a big contract. The shoulder that means he can't play 3B could eventually affect him at the plate. Desmond has one season left I believe and wants a big contract.
  20. Both these guys are going to be coming back from their 2nd tommy John surgeries. I'll bet neither one has a stretch of longer than 10 effective games left in their careers. I can't see them being in a starting rotation to start the season either. Trading for Niese means trading with Sandy Alderson. I don't think Segura would be enough for him.
  21. There are DVDs you can buy that assist in calibrating a tv. I've got a bad habit of watching a bit of movies I like if I come across them while surfing around the channels and I've tried to stop so I can give them a watch when I upgrade my setup. I think there are pretty inexpensive cameras that do 4K now. It'd be fun to show your own content.
  22. Boston has a lot of young, unproven starters. Without more from the Brewers, I don't think they can get Cecchini or Betts, but I could see one of the near ready starters and Middlebrooks if Melvin believes he can turn it around. I could see him lusting after Craig or Napoli, but those would be tricky to include.
  23. They should take Chuck's responses to Melvin when he's asking him where his acquisition would play and make a sound drop out of it. Melvin's thoughts on closer are pretty radical I think. I was kind of surprised. I don't think Roenicke agrees though. He seemed kind of jazzed about the 3B they picked up from the Angels. I think one thing he said should be tattooed on his dialing hand: EMBRACE YOUR YOUNG PLAYERS.
  24. When your pool of data is numbers like 22, no conclusion can be drawn. I wonder how many of those pitcher losses or "negative" performances were due to failures by fielders or bloops or grounders being hits. He had a long stretch of dominance the season before. Buying that level of performance is really expensive. Didn't he have a flare up of elbow problems last season? I'd guess rust or not being fully healthy was why he had a mediocre stretch. If he isn't healthy and effective in ST, they can Francisco him.
  25. Did Melvin use the phrase "we are set"? My recollection is that he made comments that suggested he had no pressing needs and could go to ST as is. That's poker talk. I'd be really happy if they did nothing except maybe find another LH reliever. If someone wants to overpay for Gallardo or Lohse, that'd be good too. I expect or maybe fear that Melvin will get someone old for 1st or as a starter. If it makes the team better it will only be slightly if at all, but... "veteran presence," and "leadership." More bunting? Good grief. Cespedes? He seems like exactly the kind of player who if he was on the Brewers would be why they can't win with his low OBP and not that much power. If Rogers were on another team, then fans could say "hey, look at this guy. He's a low draft choice but has hit throughout his career so we can get him cheap." Or Hector Gomez - a former top 10 Rockies prospect (I think I've got that right) who can play 3B, SS and 2B and had a nice year at the plate last season as a utility player.
