  1. I say this in every thread, but Middlebrooks was never a top prospect nor that good of a player, he was just good for one month and was a Red Sox prospect. His ceiling is an OK hitter/solid defender. His likely scenario is a poor hitter and decent defender. I would have considered buying low on Kyle Blanks as a platoon-mate/corner OF/1B. Apparently Doug kicked the tires but was scared off by his injury history like most teams. As my last guy on the roster I'd consider Kelly Johnson or somebody like that. I'd have considered Jed Lowrie because his recent poor season probably brought his price down. I thought getting Didi Gregorious was shrewd by the Yankees as he has great splits vs. RHP. Those are just to name a few. Also, I think the Cards got better short-term. Heyward is being undersold here. He hits RHP very well in a division completely full of RHP and he is a great defender.
  2. I'm assuming Maldonado started almost every day in the minors when he posted a career .650 OPS down there. He's not to be counted on. He's a nice, cheap platoon guy against lefties and a backup there. I'll take that.
  3. I do not want to go anywhere near McGehee. Baker is very enticing, though.
  4. As I mentioned in the other thread, they'd better have a platoon-mate for him, otherwise they were robbed.
  5. That's the gist of this trade.
  6. Middlebrooks will have such bad numbers there. Guy should probably be in AAA for them. I feel like this GM is making "casual fan" moves to get the casual fans out of the doldrums. Middlebrooks is a "name" failed prospect that was never very good. Norris' numbers/value were bumped by a platoon. Myers hasn't proven anything yet. Kemp's got issues that may really hurt his value...and on and on.
  7. A $155 million teacher. You can't put a price on intangibles.
  8. They have Iglesias coming off an injury, who is a wizard on defense but after his incredible BABIP start that got them to buy high like they did on Greene and Simon, heis a horrendous hitter. Probably worse than Segura at his worst.
  9. Detroit buys high again.
  10. Grandal and 2 young pitchers currently the rumor. Ross (not Tyson) and Elfin are the rumored pitchers.
  11. A lefty-hitting 2B/3B that had much better numbers than Scooter in the minors is probably like gold to the platoon-happy A's who are lowing Lowrie (not Lawrie).
  12. Given the importance of defense at the position, SS is not always one you'd like to platoon, but I would think the Yankees are considering a rotation and platoon at SS/2B with Didi. He has Gennett-esque splits and may be an offensive stalwart only facing righties with that short porch in RF.
  13. Yeah, as I said, Detroit has massively won their "big name" trades like getting Miggy, Scherzer, and dumping Fielder just in time. I would put a lot of money on Greene not being in the stratosphere of Scherzer, though. Once MLB offenses figured him out he was not that good. This was expected from his minors trajectory. Scherzer was a prized prospect and Greene is not. Scherzer had a minors ERA of 2.61, 1.07 WHIP with an 11.7 K/9 ratio basically through age 23. Green's was 4.39/1.48 with a ratio of 8.1 through age 25.
  14. Detroit and Arizona have actually been the two teams that have puzzled me the most over the years. Detroit has taken teams to the woodshed once or twice but make trades for guys that get overrated by "lucky starts" in the majors like Greene and Iglesias last year from Boston. Trading Fister away for an unproven, yet high ceiling Ray and then dealing him for a potential AAAA pitcher just compounds that. Arizona seems to always lose these trades but this one seems like a win for them finally.
  15. I can't imagine a team is going to give up prospects for a 40-year-old outfielder. It's more of a "here, just pay for his contract" type of trade situation. Also, I'm not sure either party would want a deadline trade. Hunter clearly signed because he wants to come back to Minnesota and the Twins clearly overpaid in a year where they might not yet be competitive for the hoopla of having Torii back. I feel like if Hunter really wanted to win he'd have just signed with a team that looks like they could win. There is always a chance that could change come July and that the Twins also gave him a wink wink that they will trade him to the contender of his choice as well.
  16. If the Mariners aren't interested in keeping Brad Miller anymore, I'd absolutely take him off their hands. If he can get over the strikeout stuff he was projecting to be a stud hitter. Easier said than done, though.
  17. I wouldn't mind this trade so much. A lot of people are selling Miller and Kemp short. -Kemp was also playing hurt and plays in a much tougher home park/division (sans Coors). -Miller plays in a really tough park. Miller might be one of those guys that flames out due to strikeouts in the majors but he profiled as an absolute stud in the minors. PCL inflation may exist, but over .400 OBP and a slugging left-handed batting SS/2B. That is gold. I feel his offensive ceiling is much higher than Segura's if he figures it out. For whatever it's worth, Kemp is a year younger than Braun and his contract runs a year shorter. Not something necessarily worth the downgrade, but that is also nice. Check out Kemp's year last year. As he got healthier at the end of the year, he ended up posting a better season that Braun did in a tougher park. We can hope that Braun returns healthy but Kemp is still pretty good.
  18. I would imagine he's terrible at 2B/3B, but he played some of those spots in 2010/2011. If he could do that as A-Ram insurance, a platoon-mate for Scooter as well, and also man the 1B/OF corner duties we'd expect, then I'd take him. Otherwise overpriced as TooLiveBrew says.
  19. I live in Wild-land and while hockey is moderately different, a lot of national nerdy pundits thought that it was a Milwaukee Bucks-esque move. Capped out at the 5th-8th seed and no high draft picks to restock. Not apples to apples but it seems to be true so far. It's a little different than the NBA because they supposedly had some reasonable prospects in the pipeline but I think people are going to grow tired of the mediocrity soon. That said, again, hockey is different. It's not impossible to win the playoffs coming from the 7 or 8 seed (barring being the 7 seed because Durant was out for 2 months) like it is in the NBA.
  20. I meant the trajectory of Reynolds' career. Have a few .800+ seasons and fade away to strikeouts. Have some maddening .700 seasons. I don't even really expect Middlebrooks to get over .800 at all, but a "ceiling" of Reynolds in his prime isn't a terrible thing. Reynolds had some value for a while. That said, Middlebrooks wasn't nearly as good as Reynolds was in the minors.
  21. Nava has value in the majors. He was a much, much better hitter than Middlebrooks in the minors and he can crush RH pitching. I've actually wondered how they've kept him stashed away in the minors for so long. He's no superstar but he has value. Middlebrooks, if he could figure things out a little bit could be a low .700s OPS 3rd baseman with a lot of strikeouts. Maybe a ceiling of Mark Reynolds.
  22. And in what sport doesn't that happen? http://www.rsenetwork.net/wp-content/uploads/Aaron-Rodgers-Green-Bay-Packers.jpg In the NBA, markets definitely push guys to the big market teams, but you still have a fairly level playing field with $ aside from the Cuban or Nyets lux tax overspending pushing over the soft cap.
  23. Still, it's more good players on big $ teams and not on the smaller-market teams.
  24. You guys really need to go and look up Will Middlebrooks' numbers through the minors and now majors. At no point did he ever look like anything more than AAAA fodder other than his first month in the majors.
  25. Middlebrooks was never a good player. He was a modest prospect that was hot for his first month in a BoSox uniform and therefore got a lot of hype.
