  1. prince fielder just signed a contract extension for $35 mil a year. ryan braun is being paid $30 mil a year by the dodgers. the average MLB salary is $9.2 mil a year. field boxes for the brewers are $99 each. how much will you pay for a beer at miller park? $10 each? is baseball at such an extravagent level still worth watching? where will salaries/concessions/tickets be in 10 years? 1998 does not seem so long ago to me.
  2. what about sheets? if the brewers have a chance to win with prince, like sheets now, do they trade him? tough call. baseball economics will drive many fans away in the next few years in my humble opinion. the cost for tickets will be one thing, but when players start getting $20 -$30mil a year, and more (yes i know about a few now) --not just a few, but most players--the game will start to lose interest. the owners need to reign in salaries soon. ex)- sexson is due $14 mil this year. pathetic. how much will we pay for a beer? $10 each? bye, bye.
  3. somebody here said they do not need a 5th starter until when? if this premise is correct ( villy to minors), then sheets, suppan, cappy, and bush are your first 4, with yo coming back about mid april. the yo injury kind of eases the rotation into the season.
  4. i don't care if prince is a vegetarian or not, i still like his music even after he changed his name to #$@# or whatever that was.
  5. sorry--i did not have my 'ozzy in the cubs current/retro uniform avatar' shown. thus the comment.
  6. luke--once again you prove that the force is with you. but why cant yost change the subject, say no comment, or we'll deal with that if it comes up in the future? villy cannot be happy to hear this.
  7. why would ned yost even say anything like this so early in camp? if he is a "players manager' and 'sticks up for his guys' he should keep his mouth shut about anything like this. very foolish. no wonder yost is on a short leash.
  8. (Although, I think everyone will agree that Vargas is probably better than Villaneuva) you are kidding, right? if this assertion of villy going to minors is correct, the brewers are putting him into the 5 spot to pitch in the second week or so. this is not bad. and it gives the rotation of benny, jeffy, cappy, and davey (sorry yost believers) a chance to see whats what between cappy and bush. call it improvement through attrition. one of them falls out, add yo and villy, and by the end of april you have your staff.
  9. again--the thread asks about a pitcher's value. easy to take one season or a bert bly. season for debate. the DEBATE is for a pitchers value, and that adds to the accurate value of a pitcher. wins add to the value of a pitcher. wins alone are not an accurate measure of a pitchers value. the combination of what the wins mean with other stats do. so what's the big deal?
  10. my last thought on this thread--time to go sing karaokee--is this; what if the post said-- ARE PITCHING LOSSES AN ACCURATE MEASURE OF A PITCHER'S VALUE? i'm pretty sure ben sheets fans would have something to say about this.
  11. i wish i had his money anyway. its just not as much as santana's.
  12. luke-it is a team stat. the question here was--i believe-- were wins relative to a pitchers value? are we all here playing GM as to who we want on our team, or how much we would pay them? the question was value, and does that mean getting the most bang for the buck, or paying for the going rate for front line pitchers. i say that the GM's of MLB pay for wins from their starters as an important stat, with close to .500 as the beginning mark. and the GM's set the value, not roto gods/stat hounds/mlb fans like us. peripheral stats will help ben sheets, but if his innings, gs,qs, stats were higher, so would his wins=durability=santana payday. that is value from wins.
  13. agreed. and add quality starts. those 3 stats--gs, innings, and qs--all lead to higher win totals, which equals durability, which leads to higher win totals. that is why it is a good stat--not the end all bert b. fans-- but a good and important one.
  14. right or wrong it's reality. and not an excuse. if wins are so low on the importance list for you and others, you are mistaken. as j briggs pointed out , the win stat represents more--like durability and dependability. it is one of a few things that evaluate a pitcher.
  15. who will make more money--a pitcher with who averages 16 wins 3 years in a row or a pitcher who averages 9? the wins stat is important to MLB executives who determine pay, the same guys who run arbitration. so you're saying it is not important in determining the validity of w/l records? and big contracts after career years that included a big win total? yes gm's will pay for talent, but sheets will make a lot more money next year if he wins 18 games instead of 10.

  19. That's nice. Now look at the teams winning percentages. Oswalt's teams were much, much better than Sheets' teams. over the last 3 years the brewers ahve won 239 games, while the astros have won 244. over the last 3 years sheets has won 28 games, while oswalt has won 49 games. so what is your point? jonny briggs is correct.
