  1. you point out a scary thought that jumps out here-lack of bench strength. the brewers like to keep a lot of pitchers, but maybe they only keep 12. so 2 outfield spots(assuming gross or gwynn start) with gross or gwynn and kapler? infield with counsell and nunez? dillon instead of kapler or nunez? hopefully rottino instead of munson? hope no one gets hurt.
  2. sorry to disagree here--maybin, miller and jones are prospects, yes. and none of them has produced in the bigs remotely to what gallardo did last year. so DM would never trade gallardo after what he did--just as none of the 3 players you mention would have been traded if they performed to a similiar level in the bigs that gallardo did. that is why they are still prospects--good ones yes.but still traded. would you trade gallardo now? nor would i or DM. i say if you can improve your team to win now--we are there-trade any/all prospects to do it. there are way, way, way too many can't miss prospects who miss.
  3. I am not sure how much trade value that Claudio Vargas has. sorry--cv means carlos villenueva
  4. what about the others mentioned? some gm's look at needs along with top 25/50 rankings. CV and parra? with inman or laporte? i may not rate prospects as highly as others, but some of the cattle moved could have been matched with some package from the brewers. i still say some of the studs may have been gotten, except for a lets keep building attitude from DM. our future is bright, but strike when the fire is hot. yes he went after linebrink in a pennant chase--first one in years--but he was the wrong player at the wrong time(big slump). so credit for a move. it still seems that some of the studs moved this offseason went far cheaper than they should, and that the brewers could have gotten involved.
  5. right--he does throw 100mph--some team will have him. now what about those brewer girls?
  6. we did improve the D, possibly. and the bullpen, probably. but as we saw with the packers, the window to win may be narrow. those prospects on their own-no. but toss in a laporte, a CV or a parra or tgj or ? or all of them-then you might have something. we have enough depth-and did with the linebrink guys in some combo added to it--to compete. the building for the future is over. win now, thats what i say. cameron/kendall is a patch job. the tigers did trade miller/maybin, but they are still prospects.
  7. without too much research, it seems to me that some of the trades for the big names this offseason have been executed with nominal return to the trading team. could the brewers have been more active/successful this offseason if we had those pitching prospects to include in possible trades this winter? some of those traded mlb stud players--yes salary/free agent status could come into play--would look very good drinking a cold miller this year. we are after the playoffs/ws this year....right? santana, cabrera, bedard, oh my. we could not offer up the same or more?
  8. and i thought the young people want a "change". good thing i don't like to talk about politics--it's really black and white. you are right, the dh was a rule change--just like some of the other examples i pointed out. more changes will occur and i agree with you that the rules should be the same. another rule change-- take away the all star game importance--talk about a joke, or if you prefer a breaking of tradition. why should the mid summer classic have a bearing on the world series? again the game evolves, right or wrong, so lets plan on a DH for all--then interleague play like other pro sports.
  9. stop all this seth mcclung talk! please. he hit the guy on yost's instructions. lets talk about someone/something that will impact this year--like the brewer girls.
  10. he was on my roto team as a cheap closer. he will be back in the auction this spring.
  11. bjr--nice post. the 2008 NYB doesn't sound like too much fun to play. (edited quotation into correct message --1992casey)
  12. hi. this is my first time here. my name is ozzy, im over 35, i like the dh, and i'm a brewer fan. (that wasn't hard). i too support more interleague play, all the time. and i recognize that the dh could be problematic in that situation. things change--wild card playoff games, 2 point conversions, instant replay (soon coming to a mlb park near you), tiebreakers in tennis (talk about changing tradition), rally scoring in volleyball, nhl shootoffs, ......add your own...... personally i like starting pitchers to pitch and not be a "quality starter" for a whole 6 innings, then turn it over to a bunch of relievers. talk about traditions in baseball-how far back would you like to go?--before there were closers and holds specialists? when HOF like fergie jenkins would throw 250-300 innings? that is what has added to your precious strategies--managers have more to deal with now than in the good old days thanks to progress and evolution. so baseball will continue to evolve too, and if making the dh permanent for all teams would facilitate more interleague play--bravo. but dont negate it for the sake of "tradition" when so much of the great american game has changed already.
  13. The DH adds NO flexibility to your line-up. You just put another stick in your lineup and wait for the 3-run homer. and save No bunting. No double switches. No hit-and-runs. No strategy. No thanks. WOW--brew you just solved the brewers biggest concern--ned yost! move this team to the AL, quickly.
  14. what about laynce nix?
  15. anyone remeber ron santo clicking his heels after a win, while running out on the third baseline towards the outfield? or on channel 9 "hey, hey" "hey, hey" by the legend-jack brickhouse? that was 1969. one of the biggest chokejobs ever. (the brewers last year was much smaller by comparison)
  16. interesting- almost beckett like. and he wont have to hit.
  17. my laser holding friend--back to the point that started this exchange. we agree that cv may have a bright future with the crew. do you think starting him in the pen or bouncing him back and forth could hamper him. i do, that's why i brought up that bit about capellan. i hope that if dm really believes he has mlb starter stuff that he keeps him in the rotation to figure it out. if this works out, we'll have a very strong staff.
  18. id rather talk about CV, but i remember this trade was talked about quite a bit--braves desperately needed a closer (smoltz returning to rotation) and brewers were trying to add starting depth. the trade did not work out for either. 12/12/04 atlanta constitution - "The braves are moving closer john smoltz back to the starting rotation and trading their top pitching prospect to make it work." ".....the braves agreed to trade flamethrowing prospect jose capellan to get closer dan kolb" whatever.
  19. agreed. my only concern is how he will be used. last year era 2.06 with 4 quality starts out of 5 when brewers were still in race, and a 4.76 era as reliever. almost a K an inning (99 in 114). nice problems to have for a change brewer fans.
  20. sorry about that--i had to reread to realize you were talking about both pitchers after each other. capellan was still considered- at least by the braves and brewers- to be a high potential guy. and maybe he should have stayed a sterter.
  21. are you tailgating already today? my trade info was on capellan, not cv. but on cv--he will be 24 going into this season, with 2 years part time mlb service. your report is from 2 years ago--cant he improve between ages 22-24? did tom glavine or maddux have explosive stuff? or did they exist with great control--it can happen.
  22. anakin--look it up. after the 2004 season in which kolb had 39 saves and a 2.98 era, he was traded for the braves top pitching prospect, jose capellan who had started 60 of 65 games in the minors.
  23. I dont think Cappllean was ever considered a cant miss Starter.....he was always thought of as a Future closer.... he did not start at all until last year when the Brewers finally stretched him out in Triple A...... now Jorge Dela Rosa he was suppsoe to be that really good Starter with #2 potential... Now with CV you guys are basing this Ceiling projection on 12 total starts..... he never did much in the minors... in fact as of 2 years ago at this time he was not even in the top 30 in the Brewers Org.... 6 good starts in 2007 does not mean anything.... It just means that teams have not seen enough of him yet... cappllean was a cant miss starter in the braves organization--we traded kolb for him. and cv has the stats in minors. we'll see
  24. if ben sheets stays healthy this year (it is a contract year) and has a great year-say 18 wins or so-and the brewers go into the playoffs-say to the league championship, do you just let him walk for the draft picks, or do you belly up to the bar as an mlb organization? a little history on sheets. i had to look it up because i forgot that he actually used to be healthy. in 2002, 2003, 2004 he averaged 225 innings per year with 34 starts per year. his career year statistically was 2004. the last 3 years he has averaged 21 starts and about 130 innings. he appears set to be the ace coming in this year, and unless the brewers are out of the race by trading deadline, he is here for the year. so what should melvin do if sheets stays healthy, and the brewers make the playoffs? should a career healthy year by sheets earn him an extended stay with the brewers?
  25. anakin--he did have big innings in 2006, at 3 levels mostly as a starter i believe--but if he starts all year, that is a big increase. lets say maybe to 175. i think he has the potential to be pretty good. you may be right about the trade thing, although because of the 3 guys who are getting paid that you mention is why cv may end up in the pen. i hope it doesn't happen. i would like to see sheets, gallardo, suppan, cv, and cappy with cv the 5th, bush in pen, parra in aaa and vargas gone. i am really high on getting cv (and keepiking parra as a starter) into the starting rotation--remember capellan? a can't miss starter who has bounced around ml bullpens for several years ever since the brewers put him there? i would hate to see cv or parra end up with the same fate.
