  1. I've heard interviews with Melvin and he really thinks Kendall is something special. He alluded to his pitching days in the minors and from personal experience knew how critical it was to be comfortable with the person behind the plate. Of coarse there is no statistical evidence to back this claim. It's absurd.
  2. All the players Melvin has traded over the past several years, where's the young pitching in return? Inman Garrison C. Lee Overbay Brantley La Porta De LaRosa D Davis N. Cruz (and others) Pitching in return on the team right now? Bush Villa And because of this, Castro takes the hit.
  3. I'd say balance. Lefty/righty balance, OBP/slugging balance. and you can throw in speed/power in a perfect world.
  4. Based on his current production and number of at bats, he's on pace for about 280 AB's, 14 HR, and 52 RBI, which is the equivalent to a half season for a full time player. If his value still doesn't bring what a Gamels' would bring for a starting pitcher, I would consider moving Gamel instead.
  5. I'm not sure why anybody would think Rivera would ever be more than a backup in this league. A career .299 OBP and not a lot of power either. In addition, he's nothing special defensively. If he was, he would play more than a few times a month. That's two different managers that have handled him the same way. He's 32, almost 33, and I don't see a huge upside.
  6. I don't know how cheap he would be, but I'd add B. Molina for a year. He'll be 36, but he still puts up decent offensive numbers, and he has thrown out about 24% attempted steals. If not, I don't want to kendall's pathetic bat in the lineup another year. .269 slugging, come on. A few years ago after they drafted Lawrie, we all felt pretty good about our catching situation. If they don't sign someone markedly better than Kendall, then give Salome the job.
  7. Maybe they could have acquired someone like a Scott Barnes from SF for a Cameron. I'm not totally up to speed on MiLB, but apparently pitching at the lower levels don't have a ton of value unless it's really obvious their going to be studs. But I would have settled for the Anundsen, Rogers, or Braddock types if that would of been possible.
  8. Last year for the Reds this guy gave up 30 hits in 13 innings. I don't think I've ever seen pitching stats that brutal. I would rather see them use that spot in the rotation as a revolving door. Dillard, Cody, Butler, Billy hall, whoever, but not burns.
  9. Look, I'm a huge Brewer fan. And having been one for many years I may tend to have the "what is going to go wrong next" attitude. But whether you're more positive or negative, if you objectively look at this year at this point, they just don't have enough to make the playoffs. Competing with Cubs, Cards, or even the Giants seems very unlikely. I have to believe DM can see that as well. If that's the case, and everybody can see that, why didn't he sell expiring contracts to get something? IMO doing nothing was better than giving up prospects for a rental, but selling would of been better than doing nothing.
  10. I don't really see the point. If he goes down and hits AAA pitching, I don't want it to be a reason to give him major league starts. Then how long will they give him before they sit him down again. At that point he may become disgruntled on the bench. On the other hand, what if he doesn't hit at all? He won't stay down there. He'll come up with some lame explanation, such as; I've had some of the best batting practice of my career (against 60 mph fastballs). I'm seeing the ball (thanks to lasik), the hits just aren't falling. I just need someone to love me again.
  11. According to Tom Verducci of SI, Cliff Lee is less likely to be traded than Halladay. Cleveland really isn't that motivated. However, if they do it will require a package similar to what Toronto is asking for Halladay. Thats a lot to give up for a rotation that I still wouldn't classify as pretty darn solid. If the organization is willing to do that, I hope their willing to pay a hefty price to keep this roster together because they may not have replacements ready by 2011.
  12. Hall has a negetive value in a trade. Any player by themselves is worth more than if you include Hall. Also, you're overvaluing our prospects a bit. No way could we get Volquez and Harang for Gamel.
  13. At this point I can't imagine trading anybody worthwhile for Washburn. Even an injured Ricky Weeks. I'd like to know what the brewers record is with and without Weeks in the lineup. I'm pretty sure it's quite a bit better with him in it during his career. If they sell, I understand. If they wait till the off-season to acquire some SP, I understand. I will not, however, understand overpaying for mediocre SP rentals to appease the fan base. I think the baseball IQ is pretty good in this market, and the fans would go along with the Brewers trying to improve their chances for next year. For example, I and many others, would enjoy seeing the Escobars, Gamels, Salome's get their feet wet before going into next year. That would mean of coarse making room for them by the trade deadline.

  15. Can you imagine overpaying for Washburn at this point. I do hope that Melvin has at least written down some "sell" packages so he ready to make some deals. Unfortunately, as the deadline nears, all major league players' value diminishes somewhat. IMO, dealing a player like Hardy might be better in the off-season. On the other hand, expiring contracts I would move for some prospects. C'mon Doug!
  16. Injuries are always held against General Managers fair or not. My point wasn't about Bush's injury, it's the fact that many players were traded over the past several years (some pretty good) and we have nothing to show for it TODAY. If you want to hang your hat on Bush as the sole contributor - go ahead.
  17. What bothers me the most about Melvin is the net result of all the players and prospects he traded over the past several years. Not one is helping our major league team right now. You can argue all you want about... "well at the time Bill Hall this, and Carlos Lee that". But in the end no major league help and no stud prospects. (Dave Bush isn't helping right now.)
  18. Both posts I read in this thread make a ton of sense. They articulated quite accurately the way I view Melvin, just explained better than I could explain it. Maybe DM will read it and do a Tom Coughlin and change philosophies after doing something the same way for years and have it pay huge dividends. But I doubt it.
  19. SS Escobar CF Weeks LF Braun 1B Fielder RF Gamel C McGehee 2B Lopez 3B Heether This lineup would cost about 30-35M (plus 8.4 for Hall). Maybe it would allow them to sign a SP. Hardy and Hart and a prospect for a #2 or #3 SP. Try some low level pitching talent as relievers (Braddock, Wooten, or Rogers) Consider being sellers now for starting pitching next year (Hoffman, Cameron, Kendall)
  20. - Money poorly spent. (26M to Soup, Hall, and Riske in 2010.) - Traded several players and prospects and has nothing to show for it on today's roster. (Especially the Carlos Lee trade. Lee and Cruz for a year and a half rental of a closer) - The state of pitching in the organization is abysmal at AAA and the major league level. (Mike Burns?) - Gave up on certain players without ever giving them a shot. And we got little in return. (Balfour, Gwynn, Cruz, Eveland) In short, I think Melvin is an average GM. I think his timing is pretty weak. For the number of good players we have had over the last 3 years, we should be a better position than we are. The question will be if our pitching is for real in the lower levels of the organization, can we peak at both pitching and hitting at the same time and really be a world series contender. I don't know if Melvin is good enough to make that happen. If we lose Fielder because of bad contracts elsewhere, it definately won't happen.
  21. I think the experimenting with Dillard should be over by now. What do the Brewers want to do with him? His numbers aren't great, but worthy of shot at not so good major league rotation.
  22. First of all your comparing a 3B to a SS. You expect a higher OPS from 3B. Secondly, Alfredo Griffin was a career .259/.317 in the minors, .249/.285 in the majors. Escobar is better than that, .292/.331. Plus, I believe if he plays 18 yrs in the majors he will hit more than 24 HR. Further, if you let Escobar go, Hardy has us over a barrell because we have no viable backup. I'm not willing to pay Hardy 8-10M per when signing Fielder should be their priority in 2011. Other than Braun and Fielder, the rest of the position players should be filled out as economically as possible IMO.
  23. Bourgeois doesn't strike out too often (30K in 312AB), and he's got a little speed. Give him a shot. No power though.
  24. At first, I wasn't thrilled about aquiring Halladay and depleting more prospects for a year and a half rental. However, I would consider trading prospects that we have excellent alternatives and/or major leaguers that are underachieving this year and are close to free agency. Consequently, I could see a trade along these lines; To Toronto - Gamel, Hardy, Parra, Anundsen, and Dillard To Milwaukee - Halladay and Rolen I wouldn't want to give up Parra necessarily, but what other pitching would attract them? For Gamel, I believe we have options (Heether, Green). For Hardy, Escobar of coarse. SS Escobar 2B McGeHee/Counsel LF Braun 1B Fielder 3B Rolen CF Cam RF Hart C Kendall P Yo, Doc, Soup, Loop, TBA
  25. Missed opportunity for Melvin. I predict Pedro will have a better 2nd half than who ever we trade quality prospects for.
